Dependent Personality Disorder is part of the Cluster C group of disorders, characterised by anxious and fearful thinking and is one of the most misunderstood disorders. It is often confused with Borderline Personality, Avoidant Personality and Co-dependency among other things. In this video Darren Magee outlines the diagnostic criteria as set out in DSM 5 and lists common behaviours and characteristics. Looking also at some of the therapeutic approaches for treatment that could be used to support people with this disorder.

This very much sounds like me. I was neglected by parents and have always been scared of being abandoned also although married for 30 years I spend each day terrified incase my husband dies before I die. It’s debilitating . I’ve had a lot of I’ll health when real help is needed, months on end, but in between those times I still struggle with the simplest of decisions. It’s not a conscious thing with me - and I’ve never understood myself. Thank you for these videos. I find them very interesting and you explain things very well

Be careful diagnosing yourself. Personality Disorder is the extreme. You may be simply anxious. GAD ?

This truly is sad, but it's also sad that people on the outside can't really help unless the person is willing to self reflect.

They could stop enabling, though, if they have been doing that.

I have DPD, and I have a proposition... that is kind of self evident. And that is that DPD goes hand in hand with Inattentive ADHD. I have them both, so I made the connection. It's kind of obvious, when you think about it, because they are dependent on other, because they FOR REAL are incapable of every day tasks. Because as you know ADHD makes your brain quite literally close to incapable of doing every day things and "Grownup" tasks, because of the lack of working memory and executive function. DPD could just be the result of someone having Inattentive ADHD, and legitimately unable to do "life things". -I didn't put hyperactive ADHD here, because they are a different type, more extroverted version of ADHD, who are often more aggressive and self reliant.

Thank you for this. Not much has been covered on Cluster C, particularly when coupled with Cluster B traits. It is a dangerous and highly manipulative combination - coming up with ways and acting helpless in order to maintain a status of superiority. It’s the most cunning and covert behavior I have ever interacted with. I’ve got a long road to recovery after finally untangling from this mess of an individual.

Thanks for posting these videos! Are dependent personality disordered people known to be abusive in any way?
@DarrenFMagee
@DarrenFMagee 2 года назад
That isn’t an easy question to answer with a straight yes or no. I’d say just like everyone else they have the potential to abuse and manipulate but also to be abused and manipulated. Bare in mind it can be co morbid with other conditions.

This was quite a shock to me. I've known since I was 20 that my mother had problems, that my childhood was awful because of her, not my father, as she'd always convinced me. I found out about 20 years later that the name of her problem was narcissism. Of the covert variety. And that has helped me to begin my healing over the past 25 years (yes, I'm old :) ) After all the years of neglect in my childhood, and her never missing an opportunity to shame and blame me for everything she possibly could, she has also always expected me to wait on her hand and foot - brush her disgusting hair, makes her cups of coffee, fetch her things, take her shopping and be right there to get things from the shelves and everything else she could well do for herself. She rings me constantly to tell me of every tiny thing that's happened. Regularly wakes me up in the morning by ringing when I've told her constantly not to ring before 9am, and the list goes on. This totally explains another aspect of her ever needy character. I fully understand why she is the way she is, but with 65 years of abuse from her under my belt, her trauma was not my doing. And I feel that if she'd wanted a lifelong friend who actually cared enought to wait on her happily, she should have given that a little more thought and treated me in a half decent manner all these years. I can't help but feel angry that she expects so much, when all she ever gave me was hatred, anger and shame, particularly when I was in need or upset myself. Well it helps to be able to share in spaces such as this where people honestly understand and believe what's gone on. Mother is incredibly sweet, kind and gentle in public, so I've had to hold all of this inside me all my life, where it has festered of late. It's having to remain silent that has been the worst part of all over these many years, or being disbelieved where I have told people, including my otherwise beautiful and wonderful husband. It took him 35 years to start to see the truth about her, and he still struggles to some degree. But that's another story.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a difficult upbringing, dealing with narcissistic traits in your mother. The above video is about Dependent Personality Disorder however, which is verryyy different. NPD is a Cluster B Personality disorder, which is very different to Cluster C anxious disorders such as DPD. Someone with DPD is more likely to be abused, not abuse others. If a person with DPD is dependent on someone, they're not likely to treat them poorly, but rather try to please them. Quite the opposite to how someone high in narcissistic traits would act.

@@lifesong8484 that's really interesting. So her refusal to do anything for herself, that she can get others to do for her, is part of her CNPD? I should add that she acts absolutely pathetic in public so that everyone waits on her hand and foot. She acts sickly sweet and everyone believes her, while 1 of my brothers and I have spent our lives being viciously whipped by her bone-deep shame inducing tongue. The 2 faces are sickening.

My mom has this she also has adhd and BPD with also a big hoarding issue. I was the youngest of my siblings so I was kinda protected but my older sister had a rough chilhood/teenage years. I've figured out I have avoidant personality disorder which I took for social anxiety since I was like 2 or 3 years old I've always avoided people and thought it was only shyness and stress.

I've just recently discovered your channel, and love listening to you. You explain everything beautifully and succinctly, and the examples are on-point. One question: Would you mind explaining the difference between Dependent Personality Disorder and Covert Narcissism. It seems like the helpnessnes and wanting others to take responsibility for their life are quite similar? TIA from Western Cape, South Africa.

This is really interesting. I'd really like to hear your comments on the distinction between A (dependent) drives the dominance of a more confident partner (B), versus (B) creates the dependent personality of (A) through abusive or neglectful behaviour.

I don’t mean to sound harsh, but that sounds absolutely horrible. Clingy, Velcro, neediness in another person would make me absolutely mad. Obviously I’m an introvert, and while Covid was hard on many? Covid gave me a relief that I had never had before. Introverts needed to see that they excelled for once (the world seems like it’s built around extroverts).

I can think of two "men" I know, both in their 50's, who both could work but choose to be dependent on their family. So glad they are not my problem! Neither of them minds disagreement or offending anyone though, so I guess it's something else.
