I mentioned before similarities between Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, and y'all pointed me at a duet between the two of them. How fitting! "Don't Give Up" was written by Peter Gabriel, inspired by Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. This is just so touching!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush performing together for the first time on "Don't Give Up".

I’ve heard this song a few times and I always thought it was beautiful. I’m 60 years old and was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease last year. I have been feeling quite hopeless. This time listening to it has made me weep. I don’t want to give up. I don’t.

Watching your reaction, I had to go sit in my car for a while so nobody at work could see the tears in my eyes. As a husband and father, living through a time wherein skill and hard work are rarely enough to give your family the life you crave for them, this song gets me every time. Your reaction added to that. My wife is twice the person I am! She moved to the UK from Prague to be with me. I couldn't imagine someone committing more of themself to jobs lesser people might consider beneath them. She's been here 14 years now and we have two beautiful children. I just wish those in power would stop their destruction of working families.

This song always gets my water works going because it reminds me of when my wife and I lost our home due to my sickness, during the UK housing crash of 2007-2008. I also lost my carer and my wife had to give up work to look after me. This song reminds me so much of those dark, bleak days of feeling so ashamed for my failings. However, we got through it as a team, and still together today. I love her more than I could ever express.

Robin Williams personally thanked Peter Gabriel for recording this song. He found it an enormous comfort during the darker times in his life, and when they met backstage at some showbiz event or other, he thanked him for putting feelings into a song that very few artists ever would.

This song has been credited by many people for changing their minds about committing suicide (including Elton John, who said it saved him from drug overdose). Peter Gabriel was inspired to write this song after looking at pictures of families living in the "dust bowl" during the 1930's depression era, seeing the desperation and hopelessness in their eyes. He first asked Dolly Parton to sing the duet with him, but she declined. Gabriel then asked his good friend (and fellow musical genius) Kate Bush to do it. Producer Daniel Lanois said that when Kate came into the studio to record her part everyone there was awe-struck, that they all felt like an angel had come down from heaven to sing for them. Also, Peter Gabriel is one of my favorite artists, but in my opinion it's Kate Bush that really makes this song magical. You should really explore her music, there is just no one like her. A true innovator and pioneer for women in the music industry, she is incredibly influential and highly respected. Another note of trivia, bass extraordinaire Tony Levin was trying the find the right sound for his bass on this track, but just couldn't get the sound he wanted. He happened to have his baby girl's diaper bag with him in the studio, right before the recording, he stuffed a diaper under his bass strings and got that great muted sound that he had been looking for.

There was also a context closer to home: the tens of thousands of British miners who lost their jobs and sometimes also their sense of a future, when Thatcher decided to close down coal mining in Britain. The big miners' strike, which followed on this decision, was still ongoing when Gabriel came up with the idea for the song.

Yes, they complement each other sp well (and also, Peter had been an inspiration for some aspects of Kate's change of sound in the early 1980s: the use of the fairlight, tribal drum rhythms, a powerfully layered web of sound). Peter's rough, soulful vibe with slight touches of raspiness vs Kate's more "choirgirl" intonation, her full, bright melismas and leaps from alto to higher up..the two are a great match!

My parents sent me this CD in the post with a letter that still makes my heart cry, but in a good way.. Great song.

Ya, my wife threw me away also around the same amount of time ago, all because she looked at me as a loser. Ironically she's the one who turned me into one and kept me that way, even though I was loving, a good father of 3 boys, etc. Only ever asked for her support, she instead just ignored me and judged, driving herself out of the marriage and destroying our beautiful family. I'm still trying to recover, primarily because having my own happy family was to make up for the suffering for first half of my life, for I also spent so much effort preparing myself to make it such. But, nothing prepared me for picking someone completely undevoted and uncaring.

I'm going through exactly this with my youngest daughter since more than 5 years now. She's an empath, very creative, her IQ is in an area that would allow her to join Mensa, but she was bullied in school, didn't get support from her teachers, and became suicidal. She isn't right now, but she can't handle people, is unable to complete school or vocational training. She's living a nocturnal life, and can't get out of the dark hole she is in. I manage by listening mostly to metal, but I am a great fan of both Kate Bush, and Peter Gabriel. The entire album 'So' is just a masterpiece, just as all of Kate's albums 🤘🏻🖤

The song, including the 6/8 time signature, reflects the motion and journey they make as a couple. It starts with the focus on ‘l’, with a very male perspective on loss and shame. As the song progresses, the female character brings support, strength and perspective to the relationship, changing the narrative from his I to their ‘We’. By the end they are becoming a cohesive couple, underpinned by the strength of a good woman supporting the male vulnerability. An absolute classic.

Background on this song- A number of things inspired Peter Gabriel to pen this track. They include the following: A news article about a woman who committed suicide while holding her child. A television show about an unemployed family. Sad photographs of impoverished Americans during the Great Depression Speaking to music site Songfacts, Gabriel’s ex wife (Jill) said she was the one who gave Gabriel the newspaper containing the story about the woman who committed suicide. According to her, that sad story in the newspaper was what originally inspired the song. Moreover Gabriel himself suffered from a serious personal crisis shortly before this song was written. And according to him, the song served as a tribute to those, specifically his family members, who stood by him during that harrowing time in his life. Source: Song meaning + facts

Late to the reaction but 6 years ago I drove myself to the hospital after waking up on a Saturday morning with a pain in my chest and finding it difficult to breath. They diagnosed it as likely being a viral infection however they took a few cultures. Two months later they called and stated that I needed to come to the hospital to review the culture results and take a few CT scans. My wife stood next to me as an oncologist detailed that the test and scans revealed I had stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer that had spread to most of the lymph nodes in my torso and neck. Knowing the diagnosis was going to be bad because they advised me to come in, I was prepared for the worst. When I turned to look at my wife, seeing her shake and begin falling apart literally almost killed me right there and then before the cancer ever had a chance. She spent the next two years preparing my meals, making sure I took my medications correctly and on time, cleaning up after me, moderating my warmth and cooling with the wild fluctuations in my internal body temp, taking me to my cancer treatments and through it all not letting me, or our daughter, fall into despair or consider the worst for even a moment. I never fully grasped how much the love of an amazing woman and child would be when I was younger and on occasion, I find myself questioning who I am to deserve this. I do know now that having a strong woman, and daughter, both with a gentle hearts love and support you cannot be equaled. Thanks to them I have been cancer free since. This song has me crying now. Great >_

Just FYI, the players on this recording are also incredibly special, and I think their contributions help make the song so moving. Tony Levin’s playing fretless bass, Richard Tee (Paul Simon/studio work) is playing the gospel piano that gives the bridge such emotional weight and lift, and Stewart Copeland (The Police) is playing high hat and bass drum with Tony on the outro. Apologies for leaving anyone out. Fabulous reaction and analysis, btw, and thanks for not letting the feeling of it get lost in the thinking about how it was made. 🙏🏼

"So" was a powerhouse album in the 80s. There are few albums that I have listened to more times (back when ppl listened to whole albums), or have affected me as much. Gabriel is not just a massively talented singer songwriter but a gifted performer as well. His concerts, and I've seen him at least five times, are remarkable for their original sets and lighting. He brings a theater actor's perspective to his stand out performances so the visual aspect really ties into the music more than most (same is true in his videos). He has been a curve driver for more than fifty years in a fickle and unforgiving business. He is an artist's artist, a storyteller's storyteller. And this duet with Kate Bush is just a tour de force. The patience, the need, the vulnerability, the devotion and affirmation make me tear up every time I her this song.

Thank you *soooo much* for this analytic reflection. I'm 62 years old, and have loved this song since its original release. But I must confess... I've loved it mostly for the sonorous beauty of Peter and Kate's voices so magically melding together. I've never really paid much attention to the actual lyrics. Never knew the backstory, never seen the video. Now, thanks to your revelatory dissection, I understand why it has moved me to tears for so many decades, even as I only subliminally acknowledged its full depth as an amazing compassion. As a former choir member and singer/songwriter myself, I appreciate this sort of review much more than your typically "liked it/didn't like it" reaction type thing. It's not "day to night..." - what happens in the background is an eclipse. We go from the light to a very dark place; but by holding on to one another, we emerge back into the light. This song is such a powerful statement, made even more so by the power of its performers. The over-simplicity of the treatment for the video was equally so. I first heard this song as just another song on Gabriel's new album "So" - and it came through my speakers right after "Sledgehammer." I stoped listening to the rest of the album and just repeated that song so many times. Kate and Peter's voices played off each other so well - the visualization I found when closing my eyes was quite vivid. I don't think I saw the video until this century. Didn't need to. But the eclipse was a perfect visual metaphor. Finally - a great song I loved which was not cheapened by a video. Then again, nothing Kate's ever touched has been lessened by the accompanying video... At any rate, I love your reaction to it - and I know just where it comes from. Keep up the great work!

This is the most beautiful and thoughtful reaction video I've ever seen, featuring this song. THANK you for the lens through which you see and for your trained ear, as well. Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush are, separately, two of my favorite musical artists/songwriters... have been for decades. Together, they are absolutely sublime. No one has a voice like Peter. No one has a voice like Kate. Very few can craft songs the way they can. They are both sound architects as much as they are fine artists. Able, as you've pointed out, to express emotion and intention through progressions and transitions and choice of instrumentation and vocal pitch. Each of them is a force of nature. This song is so archetypal. Tells a story that is so common to the human experience, in general. Their singing conveys the heartache, the grief, the love, the empathy, and yes, even the hope inherent in what it means to travel through crises, together. Your analysis of the song, their vocals, the nuances that make up this work of art is lovely, intelligent, and soulful. It enriches my experience of a song that I had already long ago fallen in love with.

Earlier in her career Kate had learned important techniques in musicproduction from and because of Peter, when after her two first albums, she took more and more control over her own compositions and how SHE wanted them to sound like. So their relationship has a history of respect toward each other. It shows off here. Their duet has this natural feeling for me because of this fact. Kate herself created her 40+ year career in which she kept surprising her fans with songs that are never like what was before. She really took her time in creating her music, but that is why it has a more than normal quality for me. Please listen to Hello Earth or A Coral Room, Among Angels (which could be her answer to this very song she did with Peter), The Sensual World. I could go on and on. I have enjoyed this reaction so much, because of how you know where to put the emphasis on each note and use of the vocal chords. Besides that your own emotions evoked by the support Kate shows in this song. When this song was released I was were Peter's character was. Unimployed in a dark time with many uncertainties regarding the future. It was a very hard time to keep believing things would turn out right. So being a fan of Kate's for quite some years at that time, I felt as if she was singing directly to me. Of course I was aware, that was my fantasy. But still it did feel good! And this song really was a support for me during these awful times, which lasted for about 5 years of my life.

Ok… sorry LAST thing I’d like to ask about Kate Bush - if you go through her discography in chronological order, her voice deepens over time, from the initial Wuthering Heights in ‘78 to when she re-recorded it in ‘85 - is this a natural progression in a singer’s voice?

What an amazing album this was (and is). Pick just about any song off of the album and you will be impressed. From the pop R&B power of Sledgehammer and Big Time, to the haunting ballads - Don't Give Up, Red Rain, In Your Eyes, and my personal favorite Mercy Street. Pick any one and you will want to hear the next. There was a time that I had grown tired of this song, since it was so overplayed. Some time and distance and seeing your reaction to it, reminded me of what is so wonderful and powerful about the song.

As a 50 year old man, this song always made me cry. The struggles of a man who was responsible for the destiny and prosperity of his family. His opportunity was stolen and now he felt lost and a failure. Then his love, his life partner, tries to console and reassure him. I experienced this through a wonderful 30 year partnership. Seems that nowadays, that kind of partnership is gone. Man and Woman were always equal, in different roles. These days, that has all gone to shit. I wonder if another song like this could ever be recorded again.

Finally you have found this song which is bringing me still today as a full grown man tears in my eyes. Not just the beautiful musical composing and the voices are mindblowing- the storyline is so deep. The roles of Men and Women are so messed up nowadays, well, I'm old-fashioned I guess. In my world a man wants and has to provide and protect and care for security at home - but often life is bringing obstacles which can't get sorted- this song is telling it perfectly. And as much as one wants to provide and care- you can't fight it, you can't fight injustice of systems where the rich become richer on the back of the working class. Many got out of that cycle by selling their souls. But a real man doesn't do that. The more it's important to rely and trust on the support and the love of the wife/partner. This is the source of all his motivation and inspiration... that's a real woman's role... giving love, empathy and understanding. Unfortunately as much as men are not taking their role, many women as well are going the easier way- relationships which were meant to last forever are breaking up. That as well is a product of a rotten society. This song shows me how a perfect relationship is meant to be.... it will always be one of my favourite songs.
