Deprived, Homeless & Abandoned in 'Ocean City' - The Dark Side of Plymouth

The City of Plymouth on the South West Coast of England, was once one of the most important cities within the British Empire, however now its one of the most deprived and poverty stricken cities in the UK. Having some of the highest rates of homelessness and poverty across the United Kingdom. With shocking statistics like "over 1 in 3 children in Plymouth are growing up below the Poverty line", adding to the cities woes Plymouth this year has been voted as the 2nd dirtiest city in the UK and national tabloids describing Plymouth as "Grim" and one of the worst cities in the UK. I went to 'Ocean City' to see for myself if Plymouth was as grim as they say! What i found on the streets of Plymouth shocked me... countless homeless people living on the streets and an overwhelming number of closed down, abandoned shops. Plymouth City Centre has been hit hard with streets filled with derelict and abandoned buildings right in the heart of the city. It was during Street Interviews that I truly got a grip of the desperation & depression felt by those that feel abandoned on the streets of Plymouth. What has happened to this once great City? Will anything change for the city of Plymouth and those that have been hit hardest?

Mate, you are doing a great educational service showing these areas. Plymouth? But what really gets me is that these places are just left to rot. And the homeless just left to get sick and die. What are the local councillors doing? Where is all the money going?
@neilpike6758

Joe, you can go viral nationally if you get a homeless person to put their tent up in the garden of a migrant hotel and film what the police and council thugs do to them. There will be national uproar. Please be the one who starts this stunt to expose the double standards suffered by British homeless people.

I genuinely don't understand how there are any high street shops remaining. The people running them must be working for free (or laundering money). With the cost of rents, rates, utilities, wages etc being what they are, combined with the limited / declining footfall, I just cannot understand how they are making any money at all. Betting shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and other food shops are fair enough, but the likes of vape shops, Turkish barbers, American candy shops, phone / PC repair shops, independent clothes shops, art galleries, accountants etc (i.e. everything else basically) - there is no chance they are making good money. No chance. Yet many are still trading? HMRC should investigate them.

Ive lived in and around the Plymouth area since 94.. Its always been a tale of two cities to some extent. The super rich and then the average person getting by but it always had heart. It was also a nice place to spend time. Now me and my family are just about keeping our heads above water. I never go down the town anymore and i used to go in at least 3 times a week. Theres nothing there anymore the heart and aoul has gone from the place. Some of those buildings you showed have been empty for decades.. others more recently. The town started to decline when the frigate's where no longer based in Plymouth. I live in the university area and can only comment that post covid the number of students has never seemed to return to what it was. But still theres student housong everywhere and the average family is struggling to pay the bills. Theres no prospects in Plymouth im hoping to move up North to be closer to family.

The vastly overpopulated United Kingdom is in such a serious state of decay and decline in so many different areas and this mass invasion of immigrants is contributing so destructively, detrimentally and negatively to the myriad of problems we as a nation are now confronted with, moreover with the real prospect of an anti-British labour party government on the immediate horizon, our collective situation can only become so very, very much worse.

Sorry to have to tell you this but government is not (and will never be) the answer because they are so out of touch with the reality for most of us. The answer is people. The answer is society in general. The key problem is we've been spoon fed the "American dream" which is based entirely on selfishness and every man for himself. We need a return to core British values of service to others, responsibility for self and care and commitment to a bright future for every single person, no matter what their personal circumstances. No government, be it Labour, Tory or Reform UK is going to fix it. Fact!

You visited to Cornwall street - why not highlight the many excellent food establishments in the Pannier Market? You were on The Barbican - why not show the thriving independent stores? Every city in the UK is struggling, and we absolutely should recognise and highlight those areas and call on the government to help rejuvenate and support our most vulnerable but don't bash an entire city based on some of its most deprived areas just for views.

They have been "Amazoned" etc. People stay home and buy with phones and tablets. I noticed on your video the almost complete absence of human beings. Does that reflect my point?

Good documentation. I like your honest, dramatic style. Although this decay should not be so surprising in the grand scheme of things, I think you're right to put this in the perspective of the achievements of this once great nation. Of course, we all know why so much of Britain's grandeur and architectural history lays in ruins: this government's priority are elsewhere, notably to sustain forever wars of aggression against enemies of convenience, and even forcing it's youth to serve as cannon fodder in foreign battlefields where England has no business being involved in! What a shame!

Plymouth may be grim but most towns and cities in Britain have deteriorated in the last twenty or so years. Many high streets are now boarded up, charity shops or pound shops. Wages don't cover people's expenses quite often if they are working. Violent attacks with knives often happen in some towns..I don't believe British people are lazy, Students turn up for classes at colleges and they have no one appear to teach them. I know that from personal experience. Television has been dumbed down. I find some programmes absolutely insulting by the level of inane stupidity. I recently travelled and went to a bus station where drug addicts were openly begging in broad daylight. It's accepted as a normal experience.

🎉🎉🎉 Good Morning ☀️ from sunny California, I’m only at minute 5:00 and I just have to ask: What the heck happened here to completely destroy a nice looking area(Well back in the recent past)? Big companies doing business there? Now around minute 8:00 , The area there is very mixed with old but beautiful buildings and even a lot of positive signs and graffiti, So what really happened? Do you think that there’s any chance of it coming back? Just very sad 😔. Now around minute 13:00 , Does any of this Real Estate have any value left in it? Do you think that the Drug situation came after the colapse of City? Or was it part of the colapse? So why do so many people still live there? I see lots of traffic in different parts of this video. 15:56 Looks like the city has so much potential, what has happened with all the huge property owners? How can you just walk away from some of these huge investments? This just blows my mind. 18:32 so many people walking around, is there a major city right around the corner? So many beautiful expensive yachts , where do these people live? There must be a nice part of Plymouth that you just aren’t covering today. Anyways… Thank you for this incredible tour of the area. The 'beautiful church' in the city centre is The Guildhall, not a church. The 'derelict office building' next to the Reel Cinema - closed because we now have two multiplexes in the city - is the Athenaeum Theatre, and is used by amateur companies to stage their work. It's used more in the autumn and winter than the summer. There is a luxury motor yacht builder in Plymouth and once they've had their seatrials they are often tied up alongisde in one of the marinas prior to being delivered to their owners. Tinside pool is a saltwater pool, and is open during the summer. Plymouth has a lot of poverty, but it's helpful if you can get your facts right when you talk about it.

About a week ago another well known (to the neighbourhood) person with issues set fire to his flat putting the whole block of residents at risk. A friend of mine has had an ongoing issue with a neighbour in the block opposite to him for several years now, the council are fully aware of him but won't do anything, he recently put his own windows through with a hammer. The city is full of people like these.

They do - but just not right in the middle of cities. Go to France - where there is no equivalent of the National Trust, and you'll see loads of beautiful but abandoned buildings in the countryside. But go out of their cities, and it's a different story.

I would say prob started with Tony Blair back in the late 90`s when he took over and accelorated with David Cameron ... its complete neglect by the politicians and councillors .... how on earth the town councillors live with themselves ... maybe theyre on the WEF payroll too .. Joe be great to meet up for a cuppa and chat .. not sure that I have all the answers ... and it is a tall order to start to gut the rot of society and kick start the economy and rejuvenation of our towns and cities .. but something has to happen ... otherwise England will look like a third world ! According to the charity one time we attended church service there's only 10 homeless people in Plymouth. And some of the building of union street that was a njght club before was close down, but thier still lots of shops there that are open, and there's 2 new night club there that are still operating.
