There is a moral obligation to look after someone if they have an accident, any where. What is not moral, is taxing people into poverty, eroding the right to security(Dairies etc), or expecting tourists to pay for NZ's health system and tax cuts. The tax is destructive in so many many ways. I do agree, it is ideal if people do not smoke; for themselves and their children if applicable. I used to smoke. Am glad I stopped. And I would encourage others to so similarly. What I would not do however, is take the high ground and judge people, or justify 'punishing' them if they 'choose' to smoke. I value peace, and security....and tolerance. There are costs involved in that. Sometimes the costs of upholding peace, are very costly indeed. But not as costly as not having peace and security. Lest we forget. Maybe some of us did? Alcohol and obesity are far more costly for NZ. And yet?

If the government wanted to increase their revenue, all they need to do is apply the same draconian tax and legislation to alcohol, sugar and fatty foods. Precedence has been set by the smoking legislation, based on health and medical outcomes. The extra revenue would benefit the health system and take the burden off the minority group of smokers, who currently support the health system, that all New Zealanders and visitors benefit from.
