The reason at 20:44 that taking the pawn is a draw is now black plays Bb5 and covers three of White's pawns with the bishop, which frees up the king to go cover the h-pawn. Of course Black expected the pawn to be taken, and therefore premoved Bb5 and instalost
Just discovered your 'Guess the Elo' series, and I'm absolutely loving it! The way you break down each player's skill level is both entertaining and educational. Keep up the amazing work-can't wait to see more episodes! 🎉
@@enpeyarblank Welcome back everyone! Today, I’ll be sharing this wonderful soup recipe my grandmother used to make. My sister and I would fight over who would get to lick the pot after we finished it all! First, add 20 liters of bleach to a plastic bucket and set it on the stove at medium heat. Let it simmer for 5. Serve ice cold for best results. Hope you enjoy this as much I used to!
I laugh so hard when he looks so suprising and energetic at the thumbnail but when you watch the video he sounds a bit sad and just over everything in life
7:20 Okay yeah I think there was an easier way to guess that one than the opening choice. Because I'm 1300 and I've definitely seen some absolutely jank openings, but I don't think anyone my level is getting their queen hit by Nc6 and playing Qc3 allowing Bb4 pinning and winning the queen, because that's one of those patterns we already lost like a dozen games to when we were rated under 1100. Like not just the general concept but that exact setup of Nc6 and Bb4. Maybe not always the queen, maybe sometimes it's a rook or a knight we lose on that square, but that specific geometry is just too damn common in the opening. Similarly we tend to be hyper aware that if we've moved the F pawn as white and not castled we gotta be watching for Qh4 because again, we've already lost dozens of games to that before we got here.
I remember watching someone (I think it was Ben Finegold but I'm not sure) who said that great chess players play chess like they don't want the game to end. That guy who promoted 4 queens and was uber positional the entire game 100% didn't want the game to end. He took that notion to heart.
Levyyy, today I played my first chess tournament! I'm 1250 elo rapid online, and here OTB I had performance rating of 1014. Thanks for getting me into chess!
@@danispringer You should try it if theres one near you. I played my first a few months ago. It was an absolute disaster and I went 0 and 5, but it was a lot of fun. It's a very different experience of the game. I feel like its a better test of my skill as a player than playing online, when Im sitting there and theres nothing but me, my opponent, and the board. And then afterwards being able to discuss the games and talk with the others about how everyone's round went. It's a good afternoon.
I'm sooo glad that Levy is not covering the Kramnik accusations trilogy of Danya. Kramnik will probably simmer down if he does not get attention he appears to crave. Go Levy !!!!!!!
Levy looking like he was getting ready to bet his entire bank account on red just to say “let’s go for the soul read” after 10 seconds of silence is just nuts. Never seen him that intense ever
@@williamooko3653 levy changes the title frequently based on which performs best. He talks about it a lot on stream and why he does it, even giving examples of bad tilles that made the video perform terribly. Now for comments like these is to probably to log which tiltes the video has gone through in case someone remembers watching the video but with a different title
6:01 The Wrong Game Gambit also happened in GTE episode 5 game 5. I only know this because I watched that episode for the first time just a couple hours before this got uploaded today.
1700 hanged a queen in less than 10 moves isn't that surprising. Seen it all the time. Maybe they are just on a bad day or something. But still, they got their ELO for a reason. Also, just wanted to say that Levy is the GOAT in chess.
25:00 My advice for openings below 2000 is play absolute jank as white or maybe the Scotch (solid, but not popular). As black, just look for any gambits with an early f5. Schliemann ruy, I forget what it's called in the italian, etc. Is it optimal? Not in terms of being the best moves, but it's pretty optimal in terms of getting you fun, playable games without spending hours a day studying opening theory hardly anyone actually knows below 2000
I think i commited a total of 30 minutes to learn the ruy lopez, i just got better at winging it, now i will back him up and say im sort of an exception, some moves are weird in it
I was 676 rated when I started watching this channel. I'm now a 1538. Largely because of the teaching and suggestions on what to learn to Starr my process. Thank you Levy.
7:08 it's 1100 though, levy. I knew they were 1100 or slightly below because anything above immediately resigns, and it couldn't be lower because of technique
The challenge with this is that in chess, like in life, book learning can cover up stupidity, to a point. If you are dumb, you can still memorize moves for an opening. But once you get out of theory you are on your own. We are so used to seeing people on GTE screw up the opening but hang on with a basic feel for tactics, that the reverse, a memorized opening followed by doofus midgame play, feels disorienting. We want to think highly of that perfect initial run of moves, but they are really somebody else's moves, aren’t they? To compound it, they aren’t submitting any of the times they screwed up the opening, or something unexpected happened and they failed to adapt. Which could make their grasp of the opening seem stronger than it is. With this cherrypicking, I’m surprised Levy is right so often.
I’m sorry but I’m 1500 and know that line. It’s like the first ever line you learn. I was playing a 9 year old 1100 in an OtB game and assumed that they’d know no theory. They played d3 instead of d4 in the line and then played Re4. I played g5 and they calmly played Bxg5 and Qf5 doesn’t work because of the pawn being on d3. I just resigned in shame. So don’t underestimate anyone and just play the position

It is great to see your progress in chess and the perseverance you have in getting that grandmaster title. I would have come to visit you in Stockholm if I would have the time, but to me my progress in education is now important. Hope you to visit Finland some day. Good luck on your match against Pia and good luck on chasing that GM title!
