When Samantha Derbyshire experienced Cataract Canyon at spring flows for the first time, she fell in love with that wild and untamed stretch of the Colorado River right then and there. Learn more: bit.ly/2xRwEet
The river was running at 42,000 cubic feet per second, and she recalls it was the biggest adrenaline rush of her life. That was 2011. She’s now a snout guide for OARS-a critical job in Cataract Canyon, especially during high water in late spring and early summer. This nerve-wracking position isn’t for the faint of heart, especially when it means plowing through 30-foot waves and running some of the biggest whitewater in North America.
In the spring of 2019-on the front end of one of the biggest whitewater years in history-we had the opportunity to follow this fearless, lipstick-wearing river guide downstream to watch her in action in Cataract Canyon. This is her story.

Cataract Canyon is absolutely awesome in every way except one: The camping. There are virtually no large beaches and basically no trees to speak of. But there are no 100% perfect trips, and Cat is about as close to perfection as it gets!!

Yes we were!. They happened to be filming this Video about Derby, we were on a diffrent trip, but go thru big rapids in group for rescue purposes. We were the only dory on either trip so they filmed our transit. Gave them Quite a show!! My friend Michele & I were the two in bow on Flaming Gorge dory. The man in the back, Ed, had a gopro on his helmet & it wasnt until we watched that vid we realized that Dave , our guide was totally out of the dory. Someone got a still & my head is inches frm river . Thats me climbing up the left, tuffest highside I ever did! It was epic. I've done the Grand Canyon (lee to diamond) 3 times, and that year w/melt put Cataract rapid up there with Crystal . We had to wear rubber suits!! Most of the small rapids were buried under highwater, but Big Drops made up for the calm water. It you ever get a chance to Dory, you must. All trips are not as edgy.
