I was lucky enough to be at that game as a 15 year old school kid and I will never forget the passion and the atmosphere especially when we scored. It was a joy to watch Tommy Docherty's team back then, the memories will live with me until my dying day ❤😂
Remember this well. FA Cup semi-finals were momentous, tension-filled occasions and you can sense that here. Both teams were just one step from the "promised land" of Wembley, with one destined for joy and the other for heartbreak. Playing the semis at Wembley killed the magic.
@@mikewest1542 Agree totally with all these comments, as a Sheffielder, semi final day was special for us as young kids, used to get in nr the end for free & the atmosphere was amazing. Nothing compares to it today. Wembley semis, nothing like the old days, but then again I'm old school & dont watch football anymore like I used to. Watched the women last night & even the women are diving & acting now to get Penalties. whats gone is gone forever.
Days of the working class; cheap tickets, cheap pies and peas and tea, cheap beer, cheap fags; and often a good scrap to top it all off. And ohh yes, there was the football and the constant singing!
I stood on that very Leepings Lane terrace - in the central block - at this FA Cup semi(vs Derby County) in 1976 - THIRTEEN years before The96 Tragedy took place. I was 15, like many who died that day. I say 'stood' but in truth from the moment i exited that dark tunnel entrance and entered the pens my feet never touched the ground until i was back the other side 95 minutes later - such was the mass intense crush. Crowd control was non existent. The coppers were invisible other than looking for an excuse to wade in and smack us about. The only saving grace was that back then there were no fences to imprison us in. It was an accident waiting to happen year after year. Accept Hillsboro 89 was NO accident. It was criminal negligence and incompetence from start to finish...and then compounded by lies, deceit and cover up. A f**cking DISGRACE! We have been rivals my entire 55 years but today i stand shoulder to shoulder with you in honor of the fallen...and their families. +martin crompton My gosh Martin - I have an almost identical story, which I've just sent to the Hillsborough Justice campaigners, as it shows lessons were not learnt. I was 15 too, believe it or not, at the 1976 semi in the United end (Lepping Lane End) and, by the time the game started, was really crushed against the wall behind the goal. Couldn't breathe, couldn't move. Dad stood behind me, arms either side and pushing against the concrete wall and he tried to hold back the crowd. The most scared I've been in my 55 years. By the time Gordon Hill scored (12 mins) I was feeling like I was in real trouble. Thankfully there was no fence in 1976 - and a steward or policeman pulled me and dad out, over the wall. We were directed back on to the terrace above the corner flag, where there was plenty of room. I know there was another crush at a later semi too, before the tragedy happened in 1989. I was there in 1981 for the Spurs v Wolves semi final and there was immense problems with Spurs fans spilling onto the pitch it was chaos with the game being stopped several times if I recall. RIP The96

Its sad to see how football has changed and become a shell of what it used to be. Total commitment, great action and ubelievable atmospheres. That United support is just immense. You are aware that there is this huge force within the stadium and when its released it changes games !!!
As an Everton fan I remember the tv highlights and there was a point in the second half when every utd fan in that ground was chanting "utd... utd .." absolutely phenomenal it was. If the Doc hadn't been found nobbing the physio's wife and getting sacked he would have won the league in 3 yrs, personally for all Utd's success under Ferguson they never matched the passion of that period.
This is three years late in coming mate, but I couldn't agree more. I was in the Leppings Lane end on that day but there was red and white all over Hillsborough. It was a different world then. Your lads played with a similar passion in the mid-80s and I have fond memories of that time too, especially 1985 and Big Norm.
As a lifelong United fan I’m still scarred from the final , but it was a great day for the saints, still we came back the following year and beat the scousers, the seventies was electric what a great time to be around
@@jimmann4284 Leeds were the best in the early 70's by far, until Revie left for England in 74, then Liverpool best. Dotted in between were Clough's teams, Derby and Forest, and Arsenal were never too far away. Man Utd were the best Cup team. I was in the away end in this game, Hillsborough just down the road from where I live, although I support Man Utd. Away games were like home games, and 3 in 4 in the ground that day were Utd fans. Amazing! Working class lads, out for a pint, a singalong, and a game of footy. The energy as someone said was remarkable when Utd were in town. Docherty was the best manager, apart from Fergie and Sir Matt; all working class Glaswegians, as were many of the players, or from Barnsley mines, and such like. One Busby Babe, Jonesy, buried 100 yards at the back of me; another a few miles up road, England striker Tommy Taylor. Busby really started something wonderful, and Docherty rekindled it. Only a few words needed to sum it all up: Attack, attack, attack, attack, ATTACK!!!
I've only ever cried twice over football. Once in 1973 when Poland drew 1-1 at Wembley, and this was the second time. Even as a 10 year old, I could sense that this Derby side was in decline, and this defeat was the beginning of the end of our great decade. If only Nish's non-offside run had been allowed to continue...
I used to attend Old Trafford during these years - the atmosphere was just unbelievable - exciting and fun. The downside - violence and thuggery were a constant threat - but the football was fab !! When United scored there was soo much love in the house - you’d be forgiven for thinking everyone was E’d up. Lol. Rx
Cried buckets after this game as an avid 11 yr old Derby fan! Was there with my Dad and David Nish WAS ONSIDE!!! Jack Taylor was completely biased towards Utd throughout. Seem to remember he was wired up for the game for some kind of documentary!!
As an owl born after this makes me feel proud. Hillsborough is quite dated now but to host teams like Manchester United and arsenal in fa cup finals it must have been decent in its day x
‘Merlin’ what a player and didn’t stay long enough! Will never forget that semi final as a kid who went to his first game at OT that season as a 15yr old v Walsall in the 3rd round. Programme cost me 8p and the start of a love story that I still have as a 64yr old! And I will always love my club regardless of its disappointing teams!
Atmosphere at those Semis was amazing. Better than finals. So lucky if you can say you were there. Football fans yearn for those atmospheres again. But sadly don't think the likes of those games at Hillsborough will be matched again.
What a team Tommy Doc built AND what a stupendous support they gathered. Is is too much to say that once The Doc left and that team broke up, it was never quite the same again? Being honest, it's never been the same, despite Ferguson's success.
Rembering these times of being a United fan when Tommy Doc was the manager, fucking amazing and would not swop it for now, paying on the day, 15 to 20,000 United fans at all away games and Old Trafford was brilliant with a singing swaying Stretford End, lol at you fans who think now is footballs best time, dream on, you have no idea what you missed.
Had a wee supporters club in Newcastle N.Ireland used to go every year to the Utd Spurs game great atmosphere 3/1 was the normal score line.!!! Big Pat Jennings's was claped from the halfway line by 22,000 Stretford Ender's he waved in response to their support they then give him the two fingered salute!!! Great times indeed,Big Pat give us the old two fingers back ,and pulled off some Fantastic saves.!!!
I agree - I was at both games and there were more Derby fans at Hillsborough in 1976 (and United fans outnumbered them over two to one) than Leeds fans in 1977.

Young fans today days have absolutely no idea just how big the fa cup was back in the seventies and eighties, the semi finals in particular were the most tension filled dramatic occasions imaginable. It meant everything for a club to reach Wembley and take part in the end of season showpiece. Sad really that money and greed have taken over, it means more now for a club to finish fourth in the league than it does to win domestic silverware. Look at the passion in the crowd, and what it meant to the players ..and the games played on neutral club grounds just added to the theatre. Kids these days will never experience that..mores the pity
two great sides........neutral venue......ecstacy for the winners agony for the losers!!!.........a trip to wembley for the victors....which then.unlike now.......meant everything to supports !! there may be loads more money around in the game now and no question english clubs are doing well in europe but when you see footage like this you cant help but feel the english game has lost something over the years.somdthing that was good and worth holding on to
Proper football,... Before obscene mone,y...foreign investment,..and greedy agents blighted the game,.....when gritty football on muddy pitches and proper tackling was allowed......miss the days of cold tea and warm beer,....it was the imperfections that made it perfect to me.....games of yesterday year , gave me some cherished memories,...that I remember with a nostalgia and warmth.....great times
@Blackstone The British game has changed forever and I'm sorry to say, but they can keep it. I haven't been to a game in 30 years. So much of the modern game has changed for the worse. For a game I once loved, now I wouldn't go for nothing. For all the reasons Chris mentioned, and a few more. R.I.P the REAL British game. I'm just glad I can relive moments like this from old footage.
I was there in the Derby end when they scored the 2nd goal the barrier collapsed with peer pressure of us celebrating, how no one died that day was a miracle
Derby's main man charlie george was missing, he was playing out of his skin until he dislocated his shoulder against stoke, Derby also had other key players missing that day, and without making excuses it cost them dearly, the Rams had already taken 3 points off utd that season and if charlie had been fit I'm pretty confident the outcome would of been different. All ifs n buts though.
It was manic in the Leppings Lane end on that day. After we got the free kick (@4.21) I remember looking at the stand clock which read 4.35 and thinking 'only about ten minutes from Wembley - can we retain the lead?' (Derby were reigning Champions and a good side in those days). A few seconds later Steve Powell deflected Gordon Hill's shot into the net and I ended up about 10 yards away. A few week's later I was at Wembley and we were 'only' playing Southampton - what could possibly go wrong?
You never knew with Gordon Hill if his free kicks were going to hit the target. Sometimes they were hit and miss , but that was his glory day! He never turned up for the final against Southampton, but neither did most of his team mates.
I have got Gordon Hill autograph from 1977 I was 8 and I said to my mum that is Gordon Hill he plays for Manchester United and England, I was far too shy to say hi but my mum took me to say hi, he was such a nice man talked to me and my mum for a few minutes in Enfield he was shopping while he was with the England team, was too shy to say I was not a Man U fan 😂😂😂
I'm glad I sort of got to see good soccer in the early 90's (those first Premier League years were good, before the foreigner rule was repealed)...now it's unbelievably awful to watch.
The beginning of the end for us. We never recovered from this defeat, years of decline followed, still struggling 47 years later. Shame really because we were just as big and important as anyone during that era, I honestly do believe if we had sustained it for another decade and won a European cup, we would be in par now with the likes of Tottenham, Villa, West Ham, Newcastle. Playing in in front of 50 - 60 thousand every week, competing in Europe and finishing in the top half of the table most years. Be in no doubt whatsoever, Derby County should've been massive.
Me father was there, a small kid of 15, right in the absolute carnage of the leppings lane end. Went with a few mates and got a bit crushed but thankfully made it back home in one piece. He had cricket that day and now normally he would’ve never skipped cricket not on his life, but as it was an fa cup semi-final and a mate of his had a few tickets, he couldn’t resist. He got a right bollocking off his brother and dad when he randomly turned up from out of nowhere after just witnessing Yanited make it to the illustrious final though. Which I found pretty funny when he told me the story.
Manchester really blew it in the cup final that year. They looked so convincing as they swept aside the reigning league champions in the semi but I think complacency set in before the final against second division Southampton. They thought they just had to turn up to win the cup and were made to pay the price.
No, United have the biggest away following in the country Mate, Leeds, when they came to Old trafford used to have a shite away following in the 70s, we used to take loads to Elland road, but you not being a Leeds fan wouldnt know that . Leeds are a big club in Yorkshire only! ;)

The only difference between the two sides that day was charlie george, a different story if he had been playing, class act way ahead of his time time, the injury against stoke cost Derby the double one win out of eleven when he was injured.

@duxberry1958 we had half the end which had been allocated to leeds and in total 2 thirds of the ground the following year. Funny how Leeds fan dont mention this when they get all nostalgic. Two years after being in a European cup final they couldnt sell thousands of tickets for a semi final 20 miles away
they only choose to remember the odd occasions..couldn't handle the fact we were the only team who pissed all over them off the pitch year after year..and their firm was very good at home!..great days!!👊👊👹
Leppings Lane always looked overcrowded, when they added fences & pens it was a disaster waiting to happen . Been in some big crowds but that terrace was the only time I was scared Also, the teams with biggest following always got the smaller terrace at Hillsborough semis & Derby & Forest in the massive Kop! SY Police always looked at the geography of the teams playing rather than size of support. ie. Derby and Forest would be on M1 and get the massive Kop side and eg. Man Utd and Liverpool got the Leppings Lane ends as they travelled via Snake pass. A deadly planning mistake by SY Police. But always about segregation....and fan behaviour meant segregation was necessary.

You sent the tickets back unsold it was nothing to do with tickets being sent to MUFC by mistake pal as you still had unsold tickets at Elland road the day before .
First time I really cried as a RAM - it hurt lol - I knew without George as a 9 year old we would struggle and that git Gordon Hill I actually hated after lol - all is forgiven - but that Derby team was almost faultless at full strength !! Grrrr
I remember this 1! We didn't go to this game; I went with my Dad, every now & then to watch the Rams at the Baseball Ground. SOME weirdo looking astrologist came on the pregame buildup on the BBC or Central TV, & predicted United would win 2-0. And they did! RUINED my afternoon.
Leeds brought a decent following in 1981 but every other tiime till 2010 cup they sent Tkts back in their thousands . MUFC took thousands to Leeds during the seventies as video footage backs up

I was every leeds game at old Trafford 1990 onwards and no we didn't send tickets back in their thousands . Why lie ? That lower terraced bit in the K stand only held 3k . Not exactly hard to fill is it ??

mcbrando It's the way the police controlled the crowd on the day - The team whose support approached Sheffield from the south would be allocated the kop end (Notable - Coventry 1987, Notts Forest 1988 &1989) The team whose support came from north of Sheffield got Leppings lane end.
@@apathyintheuk265 Excellent comment I'm a Wednesday fan and also have a huge interest in the history of the FA cup and with so many semifinals played at Hillsborough naturally it's a question I'm always eager to answer South Yorkshire police made some very dodgy decisions over the years and inconvenienced thousands for their own convenience and that arrogant approach obviously reached its zenith in 89 Disgusting decisions made over the years that cost lives and tarnished the legacy of Hillsborough for good.
