DEREK GRIPPER - "Jarabi" (Toumani Diabaté)

Derek Gripper’s arrangement of Toumani Diabaté’s “Jarabi” at the Long Street Slave Church in Cape Town (May 2012). This performance sees a 21-string kora composition from Mali finding expression on a six-string classical guitar at the same venue in which Diabaté performed in 2009. Gripper’s work as a “translator” of the West African kora appears on his 2012 album One Night on Earth: Music from the Strings of Mali.

We discoverd Derek at lovely intimate Town Hall performance last Friday. His playing was nothing short of jaw dropping but more importantly so stunningly beautiful it was a moving experience. I would drop anything anywhere to go see this master of his instrument. On a lighter note my brother in law at the conclusion leant in to me and whispered " there's gonna be a few people who go home tonight and smash their guitars." Perfect finale.

I had the pleasure meeting Derek when he gave a concert and guitar workshop in Cambridge, UK. What I like the most above his playing, which is clearly very technical, is that he feels every single note, every texture, every rhythm, every cry, so you as a listener are transported to the place that originally inspired him. Magical stuff.

Amazing!!! Derek plays Kora music on guitar better than I can play it on Kora.

Truly amazing. Unfortunate for most guitar players, I think Derek Gripper is steeped in the Wet African Griot tradition as his obviously has amazing technical ability but his sense of rhythm and feel is not something one can practice but takes a lot of connection. It really gets me emotional. Just amazing. I hope he posts concerts so I can see him live.

Derek is also starting a Skype teaching practice, and he is very generous with his arrangements and inside information. I had my first lesson last week, and I'm well into Jarabi already. Great technical study for classical guitarists as well, since the accents are different from the European music, and the melodies placed in odd spots, along with that sense of swing that most classical musicians struggle with.

My oh my. I've been a fan of Toumani for 6 years, at first falling in love with the album 'New Ancient Strings' and it has been consistently my most listened to album since I first heard it. Mr Gripper your translations of his music are absolutely nothing short of amazingly beautiful. Thank you for this album. I will cherish 'One Night On Earth' for the rest of my life.

I heard a recent interview with John Williams the famous classical guitarist. He raved about Derek Gripper as one of the most exciting fresh new players out there who had an approach that was amazing and something entirely different. That is why i’m listening to this now.

The magic starts with the first notes from the guitar... Continuing to build as the rhythm weaves its own magic so beautifully, until... The vocal is introduced, hovering above the textural playing... This performance expresses so beautifully the wonderful music of Mali! Thank you so much for this Derek! Clive Davies

this is fucking incredible. but it's missing the most important thing: the rhythm. if you go listen to a bunch of j-dilla and then come back to listening to Toumani Diabete and Hamid al Kasri ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1bNjmKcf0Ic.html you start to notice that they have this calculated unevenness that is more subtle an impossible than swing.
