One of my favourite things about Roddy, aside from the obvious speed and precision, is how he sets up his drumkit so the heads are almost flat, which encourages proper technique. You can't tell so much on this kit but on his full kit you can see what I mean. The guy is such a fucking pro.
Way ahead of everybody else... Ghost notes, chops with grooves, dark cymbals, herta ostinatos, limb independence. Really ahead of the trends here while being aggressive and metrically consistent.
Derek would play drums for me at STAR MUSIC in Columbia, SC when I was a little boy. I am so happy to see that he is still at it! Very proud of you D! Come on back home and do a drum clinic for us man!
Yeah Derek! Not enough players rocking that FAT Steve Gadd-esque snare drum sound anymore. His drums have such a "classic" tuning. That set is ready for a funk session!!
NO way, How can you say that? Roddy is one of the best drummers of our time, not to mention slightly underrated. Did you see all of those techniques he does with the chip hi-hat? His different time signatures. Rolls Speed, and Agility.. Swing/ska beats.. and not to mention his great independence.
Sweet Grandmother of Jesus. This guy is one of the most versatile drummers I've seen around. I'd like to see him and Marco Minnemann have an interdependence drum off.
I cut it back in May of last year. It was time! I do a lot of cycling now and yeah, way hot under a bicycle helmet. Plus it's nice to have in ear monitors and not have them get caught every time I turn my head. I'll have this and three other Derek vids up when I get back from NAMM.
Hey man good words.I realize the number of cymbals even I want is far fetched and it may frustrate me to not have them, one day I will...but atleast I can wake up everyday knowing I have food to eat and a warm bed to lay back into every night.
@zgates "Blast beats originated in performances by jazz drummers of the 1950s, 60s and 70s such as Tony Williams, Angelo Spampinato, and Sunny Murray" got this off wikipedia. Sure, back then it didn't have this name, but the technique was used.
i definitely know the difference. derek is an all around drummer who plays jazz stuff but also plays metal, they go hand in hand. he does a good job of mixing jazz drumming and death metal drumming together, which is my fav. get some polyrhythms going and then some blasting, then mash em together
@Dshnizal15 and i think this is prettymuch off the cuff. he's so well rounded that i doubt it being a difficult think to play an improv solo like this off the cuff.
I agree 5:39 made me go WHAT THE FUCK?! proving derek roddy has more rhythm and flow then any other. He has the most tech solo's. Fastest beats. and best flow. Derrek roddy is rounded in sy-fy and jazz to death metal and rock. and everything in between. DEREK RODDY IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD.
The rev was actually a pretty good drummer for the kind of band he was in, i mean think about it, he was fairly technical, for the scene he was involved in at least.
Jesus. He is the most well rounded drummer and best at every genre. He destroys every time i watch his videos. its fucking amazing. he needs a new band. hate eternal wasn't going to work out for him anyway. I want him to bring his godly flow and creativity to a band. BTW. does anybody know if this was written or it was improv.?
Incredible, Gifted, Extraordinaire is what Derek is and how anyone can discredit him regarding his playing are just the thoughts and words of a jealous person that is in all likelihood a loser of life wannabe but never willbe
