Wondering why you think that, Eric is an explosive gospel chopper with really deep pockets, Roddy its very technical and more of a practice than improv guy. However I dont think Roddy's ideas are poor in any way, if anything I think he was the most groovy of the 2 in this video example.
Daniel Singleton Not so much,,,, Neither one of them really at this stage,,,,, Eric Moore NOW might be in that class---- world class is more like Lee Pearson or Trilok Gurtu,,,, and many others actually,,,, Even Roger Biwandu who's wonderful---
2 greats with totally different styles jamming and just having fun. Why does it always have to be "he's better then this guy or that guy" people in here commenting about who won... Come on now, isn't it about having fun and the love for music?
I'm a metal guy (I mean....listen to my music on my channel...) but NOTHING compares to gospel chops when it comes to sheer dynamics...that's the subtle beauty of it...
Alot of what metal fans think are the hard drum parts in metal music are the easy parts, blasting (up to certain speeds) is pretty easy for most drummers. But to say metal drumming is talentless is plain wrong. Look at derek here, for one. Also bands like Beyond Creation and Obscura have extremely groovy, yet fast and explosive drummers. There is no winner or loser, just rhythmic enjoyment for 10:00
i think there is no winner, they are both amazing drummers, the albums derek appears on are amazing, and eric does a great job on the ones he appears on. they both have exceptional groove too
words can't describe what i feel about these two men, they play with so much love and devotion that they are just awesome. they watch each other while playing and never missed a beat plus a little showing off thrown in there made a great solo for both these great drummers.
I just love the amount of sportmanship there is. It's like there somewhat competing but it's all for fun. not about proving who's better, but to make music!
I like how both of them are having so much fun, you can see it on their faces---this is how a shed should be! Friendly fun competition without trying to go for each other's throat. 2 complete different drummers, enjoying the moment!
They're trying to cutoff each other with respect so in the end they compliment each other and the crowd loves it..feels great to hear two totally different genres of musician share their knowledge..and the winner is..the listener!!
I don't know what to be more impressed by, that Moore was not only playing, but one-upping everything Roddy was throwing at him, or that Roddy was leading the whole thing.
I think he, as well as George Kollias, play quite a lot of this stuff in their free time. Kollias, who has even studied Jazz, has a pretty cool video up on his channel, just look for "George Kollias burn out" And I've seen more than one video where Roddy played at a bluesgig too, his signature Hi-Hats are even "two-sided" if you will, the one side is actually an unfinished Hi-Hat cymbal, which is a bit more fitting for this lighter stuff, as I understood it.
scarabaeus There's also a few videos on Derek's channel where he is just jamming with a bassist friend of him. You can see how creative he can be outside the metal context.
I have a friend (which is a drummer) he likes both of these. Back on his collage years, he was called "the walking double pedal" (cause he was into metal those days) then years come, he became a fanatic of gospel chops but still he retains he's metal chops.
i would say this is one of the most creative videos ive seen since its two TOTALLY DIFFERENT drummers and they both are playing together and both with different styles incorporated into one its really cool
freakin awesome. some people in the comments seem to think 'being a metal drummer' and being 'fast' means that you arent as good, theyre forgetting derek roddy was firstly a jazz drummer before all else, he's done every genre. fucking greaaattt vid though
Woww!!! That was insane, both drummers are amazing, it's always good to see two completely drummers have a drumming conversation over a shed, so many sick ideas.
that last one hand drum roll at the end killed me ! awesome video, they both kick so much ass ! Moore has the fucking groove and Roddy has the fucking tightness !!
this is awesome they are both talented in diffrent areas of drumming and yet they are having fun thats what its all about is having fun and givin people a good entertainment they will still talk about. im a drummer myself and the stuff they wqere doing brought a smile to my face great stuff
NO WAY! They are BOTH their own, separate wonderful genres! BOTH genres have contributed GREAT musicians! this coming from someone who is well involved in both scenes!
i agree and you always can tell the difference between a person who plays drums and a "drummer". A drummer never puts other drummers down, is encouraging and appreciates others talents and learns what he can - THATS A TRUE DRUMMER, its not just about ability - its about your attitude :)
Being in the room when Roddy cuts sick on the kick pedals is something everyone needs to experience, I was at a festival he played at, i only stayed for 10 minutes as I was catching another drummer, but man he is something.
Nice call slimdudeDJC about Bruce Carter, I used to love that dudes playing and I didn't know his name actually so I am glad you posted this comment! Michael Bland who played with Prince was awesome to!
very cool stuff ... i love when music brings people together .. it's not how or what genre their style lies, but what they have to say with their instrument ... great stuff ... two awesome drummers ... rock on .
So glad to see so many people agreeing on this isn't exactly a battle, but more so a showcase I feel. Definitely, they compliment each other. But my only part in this video I will be choosing one over the other will be Eric for his drum tones, just perfect!
Hats off to you D!!!! Derek use to play drums for me when I was a little boy. We would go to STAR MUSIC downtown Columbia, SC just to be blown away by this guy! Glad to see you in the big league now!
BOTH AMAZING. skilled in their genres. Fantastic battle. Both just as good as each other. Winner depends on someones personal taste in music and technique really.
I love how everyone automatically assumes so much because of the triggers. If you look closely at the stage...they were 6 bass drums.....and, only 2 mics available. I used the triggers because I wanted to be heard. Funny though and, proof that triggers aren't all that bad because you can actually hear what I'm playing and not so much for the miced drums.
damn 2 incredible drummers...i wish i couldve been there. i just recently discovered Eric Moore and this guy is crazy good, not to mention Derek Roddy is one of the kings of metal...so good haha
This is the coolest shit I've ever seen. Two amazing drummers trying to one up each other with their unbelievable drumming abilities, but coming out of it smilin. Beauty!
i've turned a lot of drum battles off before they finish but, this one was really cool. 2 younger drummers blasting off. i liked the double bass part toward the end where they split the kicks between the two kits. it looked like they were having fun. made it fun to watch
and the winner of this contest is... Drumming. I declare drumming to be the clear winner here - when 2 great performers from contrasting genres can get together and each give such a brilliant display of musician ship then Drumming can be the one and only winner.
0:52 is the best part. I love how they know that they reign in their worlds of music. But they still have enough love for what they do that they can mess around with each other like this. I love pulling a blast beat when my friend, who plays Gospel and R&B, when we have a shed session like this! :D
When I first saw this video I had to do a double take. The fact that these two guys even know each other is unbelievable let alone that they had a drum battle. And in Moscow no less!
tut now i have to go scrape my mind off the walls coz its jus bin blown everywhere -_- but i have waited so long for a video like this. thank you derek n eric :)
That was bad ass. I'm a metal fan too but Eric is insane. I just saw him with Suicidal and he tore it up!! I give this one to Eric. I have to admit, I thought his size would hold him back, not at all. He is not short either typically shorter players have the advantage.
This is where drummers do their hw a gosepl/hip hop drummer and a death metal drummer tearing shit up in a shed session this is the definition of being a Drummer not just a metal drummer
