This piano part written by Rita Coolidge and Dominos drummer and Coolidge boyfriend Jim Gordon but Gordon claimed as his own and credited only to him. This part was recorded a couple weeks later with Gordon playing the piano and Duane Allman on slide guitar and added to the main song. Domino piano player Bobby Whitlock also added extra piano to make the incredible sound we hear. The song that Rita claimed he took this from was her song "Time" she and Jim had written earlier. She asked to be credited as a songwriter on Layla but she was denied and never pursued it any further. Hear for yourself, that's Rita's sister Priscilla on vocals with Booker T. 😀 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OYk49admVDA.htmlsi=aQd9gJExz1CJ7vjs
@@Ray-mw1fx The original version's single edit also fades out before the piano part. In fact, Bobby Whitlock (the keyboard player) did not believe this piano part should even have been part of Eric's song, because Jim Gordon (the drummer, who was jailed in 1983 for murdering his own mother) co-wrote the track with Rita Coolidge. Coolidge's sister, Priscilla Jones, had a song called "Time" and that has the exact same melody as the "Layla" piano part. Whitlock insisted that the inclusion of the piano part would wreck an otherwise great song that Eric wrote straight from his heart, calling it "tainted goods" and he remembered, "Jim took the melody from Rita's song and didn't give her credit for writing it. Her boyfriend ripped her off. I knew -- but nobody would ever listen to or believe me."
He’s A Genius in every sense of the word. Goodfellas Soundtrack fits so well as Does Casino. Taxi Driver had a score which fit so incredibly well and made You feel as lonely as Travis Does at times. Scorsese creates masterpieces. He doesn’t make bad films. Never has probably never will.
This is like the musical conversion of the sentence: “We had some good times, but all good things must come to an end.” This can apply in a good or bad way. Friendships, relationships, mafia cutoffs to avoid connections, etc.
I do totally feel that. But like almost in a darkly, sadly mocking way. Like “Sucks to see a human being done like this, but how did you poor saps NOT think this would end in tears?”
@Alex.ActingandVO Yeah, but, ... you know what... good things will never end. And the bad things are already doomed; condemned. Jesus ' blood guaranteed it. And when He rose!!! #PROOF# TETELESTAI
you're gonna like this guy he's alright.. he's a goodfella.. he's one of us.. we were good fellas... wise guys.. but jimmy and i could never be made.. because we had irish blood..didnt even matter that my mother was sicilian... to be a member of the crew.. you had to be 100% italian so they could trace your relatives back to the old country..
Forever etched into my mind when i hear this. I mean exactly, and im not shocked, but its neat that a sound can make the same.picture appear in our heads.
1:41 and 1:57 ... that melody with that instrumentation is indescribably cathartic, I wish they had gone back to it one more time later in the song. Chills every time.
That’s the part I start crying everytime since I lost my mom…(August 3rd,2023) , I can “keep it together” up until that part hits. As teenagers she made my brothers and I watch Goodfellas every night on our only Tv for what seemed like years because she used to say she couldn’t sleep without it … I used to get so annoyed… but what I’d give now to just watch it one more time with her …she was only 48
@@jadenpeltier1263My mother is the same way. Seems like every time we get together we gotta “get the papers, get the papers.” Sorry for your mother’s early passing, truly I am.
YES, And I knew that time stamp was that part haha. I'm actually "listening" to this song as a musician and I'm really enjoying it. I wish there were three vocal oohs here and there, maybe I'll have to do them lol
RIP Duane Allman... even though you died tragically and far too young, your talent still shines in the hearts of classic rock lovers like myself. I hope you're serenading the angels with your beautiful slide guitar.
For no apparent reason, I had this tune in my head yesterday and hummed it to myself for most of the day. I woke this morning to the sad news that Ray Liotta had just passed away 😢. Maybe there was a reason after all. Rest In Peace Ray.
I've listened to music for 60+ years, and this is by far the stand alone song of all time. Jim Gordon's ending is unparalleled.... God bless and keep you in His love Jim xx
Naho Saenoki Yeah The Sopranos is a wonderful show. I'm currently on season 4. I have an idea about the way it ends but haven't spoiled it for myself in detail. From what I've heard it garnered mixed reactions, being criticized for its lack of conclusiveness. As disappointing as it may or may not be I doubt it would detract from the overall series' quality.
+Naho Saenoki I really like this movie, but I don't understand people who love the characters... I mean, I don't understand people who love that kind of people... I can not see The Sopranos because I really hate Tony xDD. Furthermore, Henry Hill was a real character (now, he is dead). So, I can not understand how people can just want good times for him or for everyone else like him... But the movie and the soundtrack are very good, that is true xD.
alguien1234 oh they're lothesome people and get their just desserts, but I think there is a charismatic brilliance to their evil. They live so care-free and unbound by the laws of others.
i know man. after graduating i went home and listened to this song. i basically started crying. so many memories. imma miss high school. i knew a great bunch of people...
lotrfan1996 When I graduated I didnt get to have many good memories, since Grade 12 was the worst year for me.....really despised it.....the school I went to was quite shite, but I know I went home to listen to the piano exit and actually watched goodfellas then started to cry (this was the day after I had comencement I did this) since well I knew the few days before commencement were difficult but what made it worse is I had failed an exam the day before comencement and was depressed as hell But yeah I kinda wish I could go back and fix those years and listen to this song after graduation
TheMick2639 dude, we actually DID play this at my grad...took pictures with my posse out in front of our school, hugs and high fives n sh%$. People even called our posse "The Goodfellas" n sh%$. I was Paulie (cuz Im sorta big) , my buddy was Henry Hill and we had a Jimmy Conway and even a scrapper "Tommy" type. People gathered round and cheered us, our girlfriends were crying n sh$#, people started chanting "good fellas! good fellas! good fellas!"... then we had these fake squad cars pull up and these actors dressed as cops came up and cuffed us, put us in the back seats and drove us off, lights blazing. Derek and the Dominoes blasting over the the PA. It was fu%$in BRILLIANT! Sam Houston High School. Amarillo, TX
FunnyVideoMaker77 dude, it was the most amazing thing EVER!!! Totally fu%$in EPIC. Marty would be proud... Sam Houston High, Amarillo!!! Class of '14 HOO RAH!!!!
You know, we always called each other good fellas. Like you said to, uh, somebody, :You're gonna like this guy. He's all right. He's a good fella. He's one of us.: You understand? We were good fellas. Wiseguys. But Jimmy and I could never be made because we had Irish blood. It didn't even matter that my mother was Sicilian. To become a member of a crew you've got to be one hundred per cent Italian so they can trace all your relatives back to the old country. See, it's the highest honor they can give you. It means you belong to a family and crew. It means that nobody can fuck around with you. It also means you could fuck around with anybody just as long as they aren't also a member. It's like a license to steal. It's a license to do anything. As far as Jimmy was concerned with Tommy being made, it was like we were all being made. We would now have one of our own as a member.
jamescrumbs I always felt like that line glorified made guys. There were guys with certain families and certain crews like the Gotti crew and the Vario crew that made money hand over fist. But you had plenty of guys from the Bonnano crew, from Jersey and Philly, etc., who were struggling for gas money.
@@StuUngar to be fair anything you don’t have is glorified by your view. Henry couldn’t be made so he saw it as a “license to do anything” at the end of the day they weren’t wrong. The family had their back as long as they didn’t mess with fellow members
There was a lot of fact (S) in the movie that went over the heads of a lot of people (I was born in Brooklyn. raised in "Jerzey...went to school w/ "The Sopranos" and even had a friend after this movie came out who was approached in a Nutly, NJ nightclub, when my 2 pals, (Who resembled the actors) were approached by a person who gave my friend a card & said " I can get you parts in a movie." my friend slowly turned the card over & said in his deep Itailian voice "Movies... we're the kind the Guys they make Movies about... )I'm over 70 & got a lot of stories... (U can't make this stuff up!!)
Sad thing is Rita Coolidge wrote this. Played it at a party where Eric Clapton heard it. Never got a credit on a song that made multi millions. Robert Stigwood told her, what are you gonna do? You’re a girl. You don’t have any money. Man, I bet that burned.
NEW YORK SPORTS FAN When it comes down to the argument regarding Goodfellas & The Godfather I’m always changing My Answer. The Godfather is if You want to sit through a dramatic masterpiece. But if You want a few laughs but not too many thrown in stick GoodFellas on.
More than the cinematic perspective, what made the music great is the band behind it: Bobby Whitlock (keyboards/piano), Carl Radle (bass), Jim Gordon (drums) and Duane Allman (slide guitar)...plus Eric Clapton. The person who actually composed the piano bit is Jim Gordon's girlfriend Rita Coolidge... who sadly was never credited on the album.
As soon as I heard about Ray Liotta's death, I took a breather here. One of the best performances in one of the best gangster films in the history of cinema.
The song “nightswimming” by REM reminded me of this tune. It agonized me for hours trying to place this song. I finally found it. Then I discover that both songs were recorded using the same piano. That was a small amazing thing to me.
That has got to be one of the gayest songs ever. Michael Stripe wrote that gay song about taking his first dick up the ass while swimming at night with his gay lover
Can't imagine that scene in the movie, without that instrumental playing behind it. It's probably the thing I remember most from that movie. That's what great directors do.
It's a great one but I don't even think it's the best Scorsese movie. After Hours is my favorite and then probably Taxi Driver. Goodfellas is great though.
My grandparents lost the house they lived in for 40 some odd years and saying the last goodbye to the house I played this and my aunt and grandparents just cried to this song playing. Always think of Goodfellas and that house I grew up in when I was there. Childhood when parents were at work, growing up and lived there after graduating to help them out with basic household chores. 26 years of my life with that awesome home. Always think of that place as "home is where the heart is". My mother and 2 sisters grew up there as well so tons of memories of that place. One of the oldest houses on that block. Was built in 1965ish or something
I feel your agony. Had a similar experience with a great-grandparents' house. Built in 1906 near downtown Los Angeles, they moved in around 1950 during the prosperous '50's. My aunt, who is going to be 60 was the last person of the family to reside there until it was sold in about 2003. No immediate family could afford or wanted to move in. Time just marches on, unless we commemorate events we hold dear to our hearts.
I liked the egg 🥚 noodles & ketchup quote at the end. I grew up in Brooklyn New York alongside Goodfellas, so I can relate, it was just as in the film 🎥 🎞
1,000th comment. This film is a masterpiece and I love it. I’ll never forget watching it with my mother. During a road trip to visit my father, about half way there we reached San Antonio, and got through it to the country. Boerne and Seely alike. My mother changed the station on the radio to a rock station only available in that area, the moment the commercial ended, the host announced on the radio that Jim Gordon had died. He told the story of his collaborations in music and his amazing talent, and eventually his tragic tale. He also told of his composition of this piano piece in “Layla,” which he soon after played. My mother and I silently and listened to it. When the piano piece played, my god. I never heard the song like that, something was different about it.
Play this song at the club/bar at 2am in the morning and turn on the main light. Everyone will know the good times are over and it's time to go home (or Denny's).
I literally had this playing and didn't realize that the song ended right as I was about to clock out for work. What a great ending to work to have this playing. Such a great song!
I think always of Ray Liotta and Paul Sorvino when this song comes on, now. Almost as if this song was the track to the end of his life; something pretty and related to the world he did on this movie. Rest in peace, Mr. Liotta and Mr. Sorvino. Thank you for these memories I have.
GOODBYE LAYLA!!!!! THANK YOU.. THANK YOU.. THANK YOU!!! YOU BROUGHT US SO MUCH HAPPINESS!!! YOU WEREN'T WITH US LONG ENOUGH!!!! WE WILL ALWAYS.. ALWAYS.. ALWAYS.. MISS YOU!!! I ONLY HOPE WE SEE YOU AGAIN!!! ❤❤❤❤
We always called each other good fellas. Like you’d say to somebody, 'You're gonna like this guy. He's all right. He's a good fella. He's one of us.' You understand? We were good fellas. Wiseguys. the piano exit was playing at my papaws funeral. he passed a year ago. he played the guitar and my nana gave me his guitar and i am learning this song it. just the piano exit
The way Scorsese used this beautiful tune, as a background music for mobs executing their own men, still awed me till this day... both the movie and this music are timeless pieces of art
I'm glad Goodfellas introduced this bittersweet classic about unrequited love to a wider audience. I loved Goodfellas as much as the next guy, but this song will always reminds me of my childhood.
"They were spoiled, fat, lazy. I'd given them everything and somehow I'd lost their respect. So I did the only thing I could think of. I did what i thought Jeff would do. I sent them a message. These were the bad times."
This was always my favourite part of Layla, and I always thought it would be great to play over a montage in a film. Then I saw Goodfellas. Now I can't think of anything else when it plays.
Absolutely amazing soundtrack. It’s so incredibly sad, heartbreaking and beautiful. Every time I hear this all I can picture is Tommy gettin his brains splattered all over the floor. It’s a powerful soundtrack.
I love this part. I fall in love with my friend. She like me, but not love me. My heart is broken, but is new year and i know, that the love is for me somewhere and good friendship is better than bad love. I drove my car today with blasting with this piece and i smiled and cried together. Thank you Derek and Dominoes and Goodfellas for this piece and true love is for everyone good people 😊
