I'm doing derivatives in Calc right now and I searched it up to watch some videos while I commute. I watched this video 3 times before I realized it has nothing to do with calculus lmao. I was thoroughly confused.

I appreciate the choice to spend part of the minute pointing out that these kinds of agreements are just tools that can be used to create or destroy wealth.
@OneMinuteEconomics
@OneMinuteEconomics 8 лет назад
Thanks a lot for dropping by :) Yep, most people don't understand that derivatives are basically tools. They aren't good, nor are they evil. They're just tools, it all depends on how you use them. Just like let's say a sharp blade. Is a sharp blade good or bad? Neither because again, it all depends on how you use it. A surgeon can use a sharp blade to save a life, a criminal can use a sharp blade to take one. The exact same principle is valid when it comes to financial tools.

@OneMinuteEconomics
@OneMinuteEconomics 7 лет назад
Derivatives come in lots of shapes and sizes, options are actually a type of derivative. The agriculture deal I've mentioned in the video would be an example of a simple/straightforward derivative type. Options trading can be multiple orders of magnitude more complex :)

Would you consider a lightning network-locked bitcoin a derivative?
@OneMinuteEconomics
@OneMinuteEconomics 3 года назад
Yep. You essentially receive a certain return in exchange for not having access to your capital (btc) for a certain amount of time. In the example mentioned during this video, George will be happy if the price of oranges goes up and John will be happy if it goes down. In the locked btc example, you will be happy if the price of bitcoin goes up, stagnates or goes down but not enough to "eat" everything you're receiving in terms of return for locking your btc. If it goes down by more than that, you will be disappointed.

First of all, I'd like to thank both of you (popcorn willy and crackurbak) for dropping by and commenting. Running a channel involves a LOT of hard work, so I always appreciate it when people comment. At the beginning, I was publishing videos and nobody commented, which made me kind of feel like I was talking to myself :) Futures contracts are actually simple derivatives. The agriculture-related example I gave in the video is basically a futures contract and again, futures contracts *are* derivatives. In fact, if people ask me to give them examples of derivatives during a conversations, futures contracts represent a good starting point because they help me explain what derivatives are in an easy-to-follow manner. Now, of course, derivatives can end up being a lot more complex, just ask your friendly genius ex-NASA Wall Street guy ;)
@crackurbak

hey man, i should've put in more effort into my comment, but for clarification i was agreeing with you and disagreeing with him saying your video was wrong! Your channel is pretty dope btw and the work you put into it is very impressive. I subbed right after seeing this video. Looking forward to more content :) best of luck

Awesome, really glad to have you on board :) The channel has been gaining traction lately, publishing two videos per week (which is what I'll be trying to do as of this point) is very hard but I love what I'm doing. Comments like yours literally make my day, I don't think most people realize how much these comments mean to RU-vidrs.

To be fair, such numbers make for great headlines but can be misleading because they also include hedges and all that good stuff. For example, if I open a $x long position and then a $x short position to hedge, it "counts" as $2x "derivatives exposure" :)

How the fuck isn't it a scam? What possible benefit can you get out of this? I can understand if you had a long term contract that was negotiated at a set price but this is just gambling. Especially if you can trade the contract to other parties. Once you have a third party it absolutely becomes a casino.
@OneMinuteEconomics
@OneMinuteEconomics 8 лет назад
It's hard not to consider certain derivatives a form of gambling. I wouldn't say *all* of the contracts which can be sold to third parties fall into this category though, as there are tangible real-world benefits associated with the increased liquidity being able to sell your contract to someone else gives.
