8:10 interestingly, this is how laser tattoo removal works. the laser targets the ink deposits and breaks them down into smaller chunks so that your body’s white blood cells can effectively metabolize them and flush them out of the body. its why people report being tired after a removal session, your body is reacting to the ink the same way it would an infection

Fun fact on fingerprints: We dont actually know if fingerprints are unique. They *seem* to be unique, but no one has done a large enough analysis to be scientifically certain in part because the analysis has been extremely expensive. There are some studies proposed or going on to have AI review very large sets (millions or even tens of millions) to try to quantify the uniqueness, but it will be a while before even those are complete, and there may still be questions until we can review hundreds of millions of fingerprints in a single study. That raises privacy and data control concerns, though, and it may be difficult or even impossible to collect enough data to do that.

Regarding the skin's microbiome... I read in a baby book that one of the advantages to breastfeeding is that your baby is constantly touching your bare skin. Contact with your skin's microbiome helps her to build up her microbiome and immune system. So if you can't breastfeed, make sure your baby gets plenty of contact with your skin.

the one about blushing and helping us survive: My theory (I am a random heath enthusiast with no medical background, just a random guy) is that when you're blushing, it's usually because of an intense emotional reaction which your body interperets as "potential threat" and may need to run and get outta there, so it increases your blood flow rapidly

Recent research suggests that tattoo ink particles are taken up by dermal macrophages, but these macrophages are stationary so the ink doesn't move. This isolates the ink particles and reduces irritation. When the macrophages die, the ink particles are released and then recaptured by other dermal macrophages. This cycle continues on for as long as the skin is alive. Some of the ink particles are broken down over time, accounting for tattoos lightening somewhat as the skin ages, but for the most part, it stays in place. See Baranska, et al., in 2018 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

Another fun fact about hair: Almost everyone has around the same amount of hair and humans also have almost the same amount of hair follicles as other primates. It's just that "hairless" people have very fine, peach-fuzz-like hair, while "hairier" people (and other primates) develop that same fine hair into coarser, darker, and longer body hair due to their follicles being more sensitive to specific hormones (mostly androgen).
@ashlyn5673

The tattoo one is so mind blowing to me. I watched an entirely other video on this before and it’s our immune system that goes in to grab on to the ink and holds it in place. The cells or whatever that go in to hold on to it though eventually die, other cells have to rush in to grab it again, and that’s why tattoos gets blurry over time. 😮

hm i'm not sure if you're actually use a tool to measure that, but personally usually, i only ask google the uv index at that moment where i'm at. and for uv index it only measures the risk of getting sunburn, so i assume it only takes into account the UV-B. But not the UV-A, which causes aging. And iirc, UV-A is harder to measure anyway. that said, if the uv index is in green, i don't put on sunscreen either. so i guess you're the one who could judge it yourself.

You can absolutely be addicted to lip balm, physically, and not just in a cycle of using it making you need it. I had Jaw surgery as a teenager that required me to have my jaw wired shut for six weeks. That meant that I couldn’t lick my lips at all, and I started to use Carmex. I didn’t really use lip balm of any sort much before that, but after those six weeks, I tried to stop using the Carmex, and my lips were in physical pain when it wore off. My guess is I got addicted to either the menthol or camphor in it. Over the years, I’ve pared down, and while I still use Carmex, I can go much longer between applications (a couple of hours even, sometimes), and my lips just feel dry when it wears off, not painful. Plus side is I haven’t had chapped lips in 25 years…
@shannonm8512
@shannonm8512 3 месяца назад
That would go along with what he said about ingredients like menthol, fragrance etc causing irritation and then creating that cycle of needing to reapply. I am pretty sure Carmex in particular also contains salicylic acid so it’s not just causing irritation with the menthol but the exfoliant could be contributing as well. You could try switching to plain Vaseline, that should help eliminate the irritation and break the cycle of dryness when it wears off.

I have dry, sensitive skin and a history of eczema. Back in the early 80s my grandma gave me a small bottle of glycerin to add to my lotion and vaseline. A quarter-size dollop of glycerin in vaseline every day and after bathing will make a world of difference. I would slather my shins in corhuskers and Crisco because my skin would scale like a fish. The skin is an organ and when it is dry, itchy, scaly and painful it makes you feel bad all over. And it's embarrassing, especially when you're a teen.

That revelation about chapstick is kind of a big deal for me. I loved chapstick as a kid, but I noticed that the more consistently I used it, the worse my lips would feel, and I’d have to apply it more and more. Eventually I stopped using it altogether because I decided it just wasn’t for me. Now that you explain it to me as an adult, I wonder if because I was probably given flavored chapstick, that was encouraging me to lick it and apply it more often due to the flavor and sensation. Makes me want to finally try chapstick again so many years later.

I'm no expert but I'd say blushing in general is kind of a fight or flight response, like stress-sweating

People truly going over the board with these skincare steps, I bet the skin can't even absorb that much product in 8 step routines

I like that dermatologists have flawless skin, while plastic surgeons stick to their imperfect face features :)
