Well, I'll be turning 50 soon, and I'm going to dermaplane for the first time this afternoon! I'm nervous, but I've watched your videos, and have all of my supplies ready. I'm looking forward to the finished result!
I'm interested in the ambient powder but will definitely try it first as they can settle into my wrinkles. I will try the facial tanner (gave them up long ago as I felt they showed my pigment). I'm sure they've improved and I find with all my peels, lasers and skincare, my face looks much more pale as I age. And YES, I use heliocare daily in summer, as I live in arid West and walk daily. I also use 25% AHA lotions on my body and don't typically sunscreen my legs for my walks( big hats and UPF long sleeves, of course). My legs have not burned. Love your content, love your matter of fact way of presenting it. Super organized and easy to follow. PS, for my red light I stand on my vibration plate (bone health), dry brush and towards the end apply my glycolic body lotion (all while listening to you, of course! ;-)
The legs up the wall. I've been practicing yoga for 25 years, and I'm a licensed mental health professional as well. Taking care of our central nervous system benefits every cell in our body, including our skin. This pose really helps our relaxation response turn on. If your hamstrings make this this pose difficult, you can start by resting your calves/shins on a chair, or moving a little further away from the wall so the legs are at more of an angle.
Ok, I have one for you: Twice a week, after I shower I apply a pea sized amount of Kerasal to the sole of each foot (most heal and ball of the foot), then seal it in with a bit of Cerave cream rubbed in. I put on socks for a while (you don’t want slippery feet) and this has kept my post-menopausal feet from being dry and cracked.
Hands down one of the best videos you've ever made! It's rare these days that someone convinces me to change/add something to my routine. Thanks for the tips!
I agree that collagen powder is beneficial for the skin. I also take a collagen supplement daily. Additionally, I lift weights and actively work on building muscle. I eat a high protein diet to support this (around 150-160 g/day). However, I don’t include my collagen supplement in that number because it is not a complete protein. This is my personal choice to lift heavy weights and focus on progressive overload in my workouts and of course everyones goals are different. Just food for thought though for anyone else who follows a traditional strength training program.
You're absolutely right about the collagen powder not being a complete protein! If you make any videos I would love to know how to get as much protein each day, I find it difficult 😞 take care!
Dr Sam, if you ever made a video about caring for grey hair, it would be invaluable. I've been going grey since I was 28 and at this point, the front of my hairline is mostly brittle, grey, dry, fragile hairs. I feel like aging has changed the texture of my hair entirely - it isn't as soft or manageable since I was younger. And worse, the gentle shampoos make my scalp and hair a greasy disaster while cleansing shampoos (like my favorite volumizing ones) can make it feel coarse, frizzy, etc. I feel like I'm going insane wondering if I should trade out my shampoo, conditioner, leave-ins, or even my hair dryer. There aren't many resources online for women with greying hair and most of the people making hair content are younger women who aren't dealing with this issue yet. I know you've discussed haircare before, but caring for grey hair has been my special hell where none of my previous routines seem to work.
Something that might help: think of shampoo being what manages your scalp and conditioner takes care of your hair. No need to stay within the same product range, just use what you feel comfortable with. Only don't switch shampoos constantly, cause it will irritate your skin. There's also lots of products out there that will make brittle hair smoother and more manageable. You can try leave-in conditioners or hair masks (use im between shampoo and conditioner). Im sure there a plenty of accounts dedicated not only to hair care but specifically graying hair. Hope that helps 😊
I've been going through the same thing. I started noticing grays when I was 16 and now that I'm 31 I see a halo of gray frizz that I can't seem to get under control. Not that I was a hair wizard in the first place but even my hair wizard friends don't know what to do with my gray thinning hair. Any advice is appreciated.
I also keep a mini crystal nail file and mini hand cream, as well as a tiny pack of anti-bac wipes in my little case. Always a lip balm, on a stick as I don't want to be sticking my fingers into a pot while I'm out. A pack of mini tissues and whatever lipstick I'm wearing that day. Oil blotting sheets and a spare hair tie and tiny clip. And of course, a mini, flat compact mirror, one that has normal view and the opposite side is magnified. And a pair of mini tweezers and a band-aid. Mini anti-bac hand gel and I store it all very easily in a 5x5 inch zip up bag with little compartments. Because everything is in mini, it all fits comfortably without being heavy. And on those special days of the month a have an even smaller pouch which includes a mini pack of intimate wipes, liners, tampax and pain meds. That pouch measures 3x 2 inches. It's a lot of stuff, I know, but everything is tiny or decanted into little travel pots and I'm affectionately known as the one who has everything but the kitchen sink! 😊
For anyone on a budget, my very favorite exfoliating moisturizer, is Alpha Skin Care Revitalizing Body Lotion with 12% Glycolic AHA. The price has increased over the last few of years but it’s still affordable enough, $18.99, that you never feel like you should skimp.
I put my both my exfoliating toner and moisturizing toner in continuous mist spray bottles and keep them in the shower. Then it’s a quick 1 minute spray-down with whichever one I’m going to use that day. It’s great to get hard to reach areas too.
Whenever I go camping in the backcountry I do the same thing with my cotton pads & bioderma to make sure all my spf from the day is coming off. It’s never failed me so far!
I’ve been using vital protein for several months. My nails grow noticeably overnight. My nail tech tells me she can tell it was working as my skin on my hands and arms is so soft. Love it.
Hello, Dr. Ellis! I am one of your silent fans. Just want to say thank you for giving us these bundles of skincare info. Such a big help. Much appreciated! ❤❤❤
These are such out of the ordinary, doable tips! You didn't waste any time with drink water have enough sleep bla bla. Absolutely love your videos. Thank you! Now excuse me I'll go put my legs up while I shop for my fern supplemnet
One of the best beauty hack videos I’ve ever seen. Don’t think I’d heard of any of them except the first one, and even then seeing you actually do it (and knowing the product you used) was incredibly helpful and built my confidence in giving it a try. I’m a fair one (like yourself) so I always thought this sort of thing would just be too clown face orangey on me but you’ve given me hope it could work. Loved the collagen powder tip (as someone who struggles to digest protein I’m never getting enough) plus having the studies linked gave me pause (as I was always led to believe this was pseudo science) and all of the travel related tips were just the best. Loved the micellar water one particularly. I go away all the time and streamlining my packing is an ongoing game/struggle I have with myself. Altogether great video. You’ve won yourself a new subscriber 😊. Well done 👍
Dermaplaning with those little razors always takes so long....I just use shave cream and a men's 2 blade razor. Works great and is quick. Shaving definitely makes a difference in skin appearance and makeup application.
I hit the collagen peptides every day. When I get to work in the morning I get a cup of coffee. I start with putting a scoop of cholate Vital Proteins in my decaf chocolate coffee and top my coffee off with a splash of sugar free chocolate creamer. It's my treat for getting up and making it to work and I am a friendlier person . I also get dermaplaning every other month professionally. When I did it myself, I got painful razor burn on my face and neck, so I leave up to a professional.
The targeted fake tan seems so clever, never thought about it. I've been using little amounts of self tan on my neck this summer to make a better match with my face which is always a half shade darker. I work in retail and stand all day, I wanna do the 10mins legs up for sure! For makeup removal, I love cleansing balm. Amazing for travelling and no waste of pads
Hi Dr. Sam. Even though you’re not my official dermatologist, I kind of want to call you my doctor. By the way, I did purchase prequel from target …the big silver cleanser, and the sunscreen. I too also take the Helio product. I also use it only when I’m going to be out in the sun long long time. I find it I don’t burn either. I can spend the day at the beach and if I’ve taken that in the morning, I will get a good sufficient amount of my vitamin D naturally and get a little bit of color, but no burn. I’m also carnivore so I understand with that diet, it’s somewhat protects you a lot from burning. I also take collagen in the morning however I buy it online through Costco. It’s for women only. I have been doing it for years now. It’s in a white and pink container. Of course it works on your skin and nails. Not sure if it’s any good but I’m consistent. I do shave my face. In fact, I just purchased an IPL system that has been advertised recently Ulike, but I didn’t have success so I’m returning it.
I'm a Bridal & Production Hair and Makeup artist, I absolutely love the hourglass ambient lighting powders. They've been a staple in my kit the past couple of years. I use it like Dr. Ellis is describing as a last step before setting spray or highlighter as a 'finishing powder'. I use them on almost everybody but I find it is a specifically a great option for people with oily skin that need a matte finish but still want to look glowy and for someone with more mature skin.
Love this video. Lately when I dermaplane I wash with Gleanser and soap it up and leave it on and then dermaplane then wash it all off. Wow…what a difference it has made.
@@caracorson2709 Love it! I feel I sometimes don’t need a makeup remover when I use this. It also feels nourishing and gentle. Haven’t tried it yet as far as showering with it. Big bottle will last since you don’t need a lot.
Legs up the Wall !!💯In my early 50s & on a quest to do more inversion poses as it always seems to ease overall mood issues, and bring a sense of calm !💛 And apparently it is an overall health elixir ?!💫
This was such a fun and different video with some really surprising hacks. The one that really impressed me was to apply an exfoliant to my body after showering. Who knew! Thanks!
As someone using tretinoin, I've found that almost every exfoliating toner out there is too strong for my face. I've started using them up on my body instead, and it has made such a huge difference!
I cannot quantify with words how much I adore long hair on absolutely everybody (mine reaches calves, it' s straight up a pre-raphaelite portrait😅) but the way these curtain bangs/layers hug and soften your beautiful angular features and the way this length enhances your blessed biacromial distance is 👩🏻🍳😘! 🧛🏻♀️🖤
Approximately 14:00 Wow!! I'm re-packing down my SPF for the day everyday - mostly because I have a few that I'm using and choosing between depending on how I feel THAT particular day. Right now it's Tocobo's two SPF sticks; the blue matt finish one and the newest, green, cica - I love both of them! And the Beauty Of Joseons Rice + Probiotics and the Mugwort matt finish SPF stick. I also have the Isn'tree and the Abib SPF stick. I'm going to buy the new Beauty Of Joseon too. It was a very good point you made there too, Dr Sam! That one should never leave SPF in the car!! Take care everyone 🫶❤✌️
❤ Love Heliocare!! I've taken it since mid-2000's when I'm going to be outside for long periods of time. Love Omnilux red light face mask + listening to the Evolutioner app at the same time. Yes on after shower exfoliating toner!!!❤
I clean my eyelash curler, and all my makeup brushes and my face with your hypochlorous spray and I have much less of those little annoying bumps on my skin.
While you put your legs up the wall, you could listen to a yoga nidra. Insight timer has wonderful meditations to choose from. It's like a mini sleep. I just use Niacinamide in am and pm, instead of Heliocare, much cheaper and Dr. Greger approved!
Wanted to say I love your Prequel products !! Been using the face wash and the vitamin C serum. Just purchased the ointment. I have been using the vitamin C for about a month and noticed it is starting to turn more yellow. In the past I’ve used the Timeless vitamin C,E,ferulic acid. I’ve read prior comments about the yellowing happening too . Any thoughts on why this is happening so quickly ? Thank you for your wonderful channel 💗💗💗 FYI …. Vital Proteins is on sale at Costco 🎉
Legs up with led mask - ❤that! Will start doing that. Vital Protein as protein power- yay! Told my husband aswell his skin is getting better too. Thank u
Dr. Ellis, could you do a video on in-office procedures for hyperpigmentation for people of color? What options are available for us that are relatively safe?
Great video! I'm definitely going to give the "legs up the wall" a try, so thank you for all the tips! I've got Rosacea and have been using your Prequel serums and moisturizer, and I haven't gotten that "stretchy face" feeling since. My skin is so nicely full of moisture, the Colorado dryness doesn't stand a chance. :) You did mention not to store beauty products in alternate packaging. Since I started watching your videos I've been using micellar water with soft, reusable rounds to cleanse my face morning and night. The large bottles, however, don't fit in my makeup drawer so I've been pouring the micellar water into a pretty glass decanter. Is glass a suitable substitute for the plastic bottles?
Cotton pads with micellular water great idea!!! I peel even with the lowest dose of tretinoin so I have to exfoliate with bha/aha in the mornings… never heard of the oral supplement for extra protection from sun; will have to try that.
Add your spray to your emergency kit, if you get a bug bite or get super sweaty on a hike, I use your spray before I reapply my sunscreen. Seems to make that 2nd( or 3rd) application stick better!
Great tips! Thank you for sharing. I also take polypodium on days I know I will be getting a lot of sun exposure. I watch your how to dermaplane video before attempting (I am not very good at it) and love your self tanning face tip although with all the exfoliating I do on my face, I would only get 2 days max of self tanner. I am going to try legs up the wall when using my LED mask!
The thing with products like bronzer and self-tanners are, I am just far to fair skinned to wear them, they very quickly turn me orange, so I don't even know if I will ever find something that doesn't do that.
Isn't collagen an incomplete protein? Meaning it probably doesn't support muscle repair as much as a complete protein? Would like to hear your thoughts on that! Also, I always thought self tanners also aged the skin, or is once a week usage fine?
@@mahamzahid7846 hi! No evidence that self tanner actually ages the skin. It’s just an unsupported theory. With regards to collagen supplementation, despite being an incomplete protein, it’s of course not my only source of protein - so ultimately all of my amino acid requirements are met when you combine what’s consumed in the form of food + oral collagen supplementation. Hope that makes sense!
Dr. Ellis, I discovered your videos a few months ago -really enjoy them. I purchased the Gleanser & Hydration Serum- they are terrific. I must ask what lipstick are you wearing in this video? I’d love to get it. Thanks 😊
My dermatologist prescribed Clindamycin Phosphate + Benzoyl Peroxide 1.2%-5% Gel to apply on my face at night and Hydroquinone 4% Cream to apply at bedtime. I heard that these shouldn’t be mixed together, and now I'm confused. Is it safe to use them as prescribed? Could you also suggest some products I could use alongside these medications? Currently, I only use sunscreen in the morning. Should I add a Vitamin C serum, moisturizer, or anything else to my routine?
Wow que vídeo más interesante e informativo. Thank you Dr Ellis by the way I use your sunscreen your Skin Solution spray and hand gloves love them all . Planing to get more interesting item 👌
Thank you, @DrSamEllis. This is a great video, very helpful! May I offer you an idea for another video. Morning skincare if you workout outside. Example, I for a a very long walk and then workout am in SoCali, so, of course, I need to apply sunscreen, but I take full shower after my workout. So, theoretically, I could do my skincare routine twice - around 5:30 am and then again around 8:00-8:30 am after workout/errands. I don't mind applying my serums twice (CoQ10, vitamin C, and tranexamic, etc for pigmentation or some peptide serum instead). Is there any issue with that? Is there any downside in doing it this way? Thanks a lot!
Such a great video. I love the exfoliation hacks. I have a question - what is the best skin care for surgical scarring? I've had two knee replacements, and I'm a year post-surgery. My scars look great, but I was wondering if there was a cream or oil that would be great to use on them.
I think I have dry skin. For some reason every time I apply any skincare product, it makes my skin look SO greasy (not glowy). Especially with a lot of moisturisers and almost all sunscreens.
Great video. Thank you! Quick question though, I was under the impression that you shouldn't keep make up past the recommended expiry month count which is printed on the product. What is the Ambient shelf life after opening? Is it more than 24 months?
I thought we were supposed to take Heliocare every day. I WFH and rarely leave the house, so I don't get much sun exposure. I'm not near any windows, just two computer screens. I have some hyperpigmentation so I use the one with Niacinamide. Am I wasting my money by taking it every single day? For reference, it's $40 a bottle and it's a 2 month supply.
Does a collagen supplement actually benefit the skin after making its way through the entire digestive track? It seems as if it did the beneficial percentage would be very minimal.
I have been shaving my face, arms, hands for years. Is there a reason that you would use the razor shown in your video instead of the same razor you use for legs and underarms? Thank you for a great video.
Collagen supplements (bovine or marine) seem to flare up my Seborrheic Dermatitis. By day three I develop pustules on my body (inner arms, buttocks, thighs) and a rash on my upper body (chest and neck). I used to take collagen supplements everyday for years without issues but since being diagnosed with Seborrheic Dermatitis 18 months ago, it does agree with me. Any ideas why?
Can you elaborate on how you use the Medik8 toner? I have the same one, but it has a press-style dispenser meant to be used with cotton pads. You can't just invert and shake the bottle to dispense it like you can with some toners.
