Derren Brown Exposes Fraudulent "Psychics" with Richard Dawkins

Derren Brown is one of our leading conjurers, specializing in mentalism, the illusion of reading people’s minds. I interviewed him for my Channel 4 TV documentary, Enemies of Reason. We talked about cold reading and how the technique is used by frauds who pretend to communicate with the dead, as well as by honest conjurers.
Derren himself is an honest conjurer and a sharp critic of charlatans who abuse their skills, lucratively pretending to supernatural powers, which of course, they don’t have. I have just listened to the interview again, and I must say I find it one of the more interesting interviews I have done. See if you agree.

My favourite story about a medium was an incident that took place in a theatre in Northern Ireland. After the medium had done her usual introductory stuff and asked if anyone had anything they'd like to ask her. A young man in the audience stood up and said, very emotionally, "I... I've lost me Da." "Oh, you poor dear," the medium responded. "I'm getting a J... Does J mean anything to you? Joe? John?" "James! His name is James", the young man replied, with surprise on his face. "Yes, James, my love. James is telling me he's in a good place, but he's missing you dreadfully. He wants you to know..." "Wait!", calls out the young man. "I've found him. Here he is!" and points at the elderly man sitting next to him, grinning from ear to ear.

Brown is a charlatan as well. Do you think his famous roulette trick was genuine? Do you think the multiple governing bodies involved in a production like that would allow a man to play Russian roulette with live ammo on television and in front of a crowd? Think about it.

He also did a show on this very subject. He follows a real life stage psychic and tears apart his entire "act". It's basically this interview but you're seeing all the tricks they've discussed in private readings and in front of an audience. The "psychic" ends up coming across as a washed up Blackpool stage hypnotist, which is basically what he is

I have a deeply religious family and they were taken in the same way by "prophets" (basically just psychics with a religious bent). I've seen a couple people upend their lives to fulfill a "Prophecy" that was made about them. Even as a religious person (at the time, not anymore) it seemed obvious to me that of course the "Prophecy" came true because they did everything humanly possible to fulfill it, then praised God for fulfilling prophecies in their life.🤔

This is depressing. Right after I got divorced (2000) I went to a free Tarot card reading just for fun. She told me the usual tripe--I'll be a success at work, I'm going on a long trip, I'll soon be reconnecting with an old friend, etc. She then asked if i had any specific questions for her. I asked, in a tremulous voice, if I would ever have another man in my life (either boyfriend or husband). And this woman looked intently at the cards, and shook her head sadly and said, "I'm sorry, but I don't see any relationship cards in your layout at all." It was incredibly depressing. She could have at least LIED to me.

I remember seeing him on TV in UK masquerading as an actual psychic, using an anagram of James Randi. I recognised him immediately though so knew what I was seeing wasn't genuine but I was still astonished and bewildered at the accuracy of his statements - "You have a painting of a boat above your mantelpiece" "Your front door needs painting, the green paint is peeling off" sort of thing. Then he revealed his true identity and explained that all they'd done was to send researchers round to the addresses the audience had given to get their tickets for the show. Classic.

I wish to bring to your attention a troubling situation in the UK involving African spiritual healers from West Africa (Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea), who all belong to the same tribe. These individuals are exploiting vulnerable and minority groups, promising miracles and taking their money. They advertise through letterbox flyers and Gumtree, leading to illegal migration and substantial financial loss for the victims. One interesting thing that happened to me, was that I had a very vivid dream of my grandad in his Army uniform from WW2. His image then morphed into a red admiral butterfly. That same day I was having a chat with the Bass player from the band and we were in a large pub, downstairs in the height of winter. I mentioned to him about the dream I had and we both went on to agree that there wasn't an afterlife. Just as he was stating that again, a red admiral butterfly appeared and rested on my white t-shirt. We both looked at each other in surprise as it then flew off and disappeared into the dark room. We were both quite amazed at what had happened....but I still put it down to an extraordinary amount of coincidence. What were the chances of that happening at that exact moment?

Yeah....... My father-in-law loved orange butterflies and after he passed, my wife spotted one at the window, it's dad! Another favourite is a white feather is a message that someone is looking over you. Pigeon, Dove, Magpie, whatever........

My boss lost her mum age 51 and went along regularly to psychics where she hoped to speak with her. Didn't matter that we tried, very delicately to wean her off it but she never actually had a hit.........

I am a complete sceptic and my attitude is prove it. I have only came across one person who has repeatedly described murders often before anyone knows the victims have been murdered. Then the actual details come out and it is uncanny how accurate she is. Other than that my attitude is still prove it.

It would have been interesting to hear them talk about a fortune teller who was right in their predictions and can prove that there was no fraud involved. Are there such cases? Someone else in the comment section mentioned a broken clock is right twice a day. And if there are such cases how do you rationally explain them? Are fortune tellers always charging money and if they are not does that make them more legit? The examples Darren gave sound depressingly easy to identify as false and confirming their rational beliefs that both share. It would have been more interesting to include someone who was as respected as them challenging their views. It is a little one sided.

might not affect many people, but for those of use prone to motion sickness (in cars as well as when gaming) the moving camera is not a good choice.

I agree with nearly everything however I was surprised that Brown included 'graphology' in his list of fakery. There is an element of scientific reasoning behind graphology but of coyrse there are also limitations to its applicability.

I think the decision to shoot this so close up is more mysterious than how a medium investigates their subject and has made me dizzy watching it.

A psychic makes a vague prediction, the prediction convinces my friend that the psychic is genuine. I spend my next few months trying tobreassure my friend about a prediction she interpreted in a way that very much upset her (to do with her child and death of said child's father before all this). How do you reassure someone in this instance without insulting their belief in this time of mourning? So I shit on anyone that says this "practice" is harmless

Every now and then a medium will accidentally get an exact hit, first off. “I see a pair of red handcuffs, with a jewel.” “I’m embarrassed to say this, but we did use handcuffs when we got, um, frisky.” Then the jewel is forgotten, because a hit has occurred.

The irony of this conversation is that RD doesn't realise the extent to which DB is doing essentially the same thing as the famous cutlery mangler. It's just that he disguises magic tricks as NLP and psychology etc. instead of as paranormal forces. And then people spent considerable amounts of money on NLP courses thinking that it'll enable them to do what they see DB doing in his shows when it's a trick. Never trust a magician - the good ones (and DB is one of the best) are really slippery buggers.

People hear what they want or expect to hear. I'm not sure of the biological evolutionary advantage to this, although I could posit that it comes from primitive man's need to make very quick decisions based on their immediate take on environmental stimuli. The ability to do that with a high degree of accuracy probably outweighed the importance of sitting back and carefully considering those stimuli and the possible reactions from all angles for the vast majority of our evolutionary history. Unfortunately, in modern society this "hearing what you expect to hear" and failing to question that first impression, has led to a stunning number of examples of otherwise ordinary people being made into fools.
