At 1:29 you can see Derren slip the watch down beside his leg on the chair. So he probably took it when he reached forward before that, which would have been really fast.
At 2:12 this was an easy effort for Derren as the initial groundwork had already been laid. This was the Christmas special of Jonathan's show. There was Christmas decorations all around the set, the thought had been planted into the minds of the band without them knowing it. Yes, none of this was planned, but the seeds of it were already sown without Derren having to do any work.

You can tell whether people are thinking about the past by the direction of their eyes (down). You can read the number of syllables by the movements in someones face as they think the word. This combined with very in depth research and memorisation, and forcing someone to change their mind, narrows it down. That's my guess.
Or he did a center tear before the show.he is an entertainer these are tricks. What he’s doing isn’t possible which in turn makes it a trick. Although muscle sound and lip reading are real Which many great Mentalism books tell us but not to the level that was displayed. Ambiguous language plays such a big part in Mentalism. A center tear or something like that isn’t having something pre arranged so when you as have we set anything up they say no. You haven’t told them I’m gonna say this and you think this. It’s all deception and he’s one of the best that’s ever been in this field. Derren is incredible and even more incredible when you know how it works
I think he took Jonathan's watch at about 1:23, but I'm not sure. . . . Nice little interview; Derren Brown's always been great to watch -- has a great sense of humour.. Hope to see more of his suggestive brilliance on the box soon.
@Symons90 Darren has put some work in pre show whilst meeting Jonathan before the show. Darren carefully has a hidden camera positioned so as to be able to view at a particular distance and place.He then guides Mr Ross to the necessary position asking him to write his 'thought word' down before then destroying the evidence.Darren turns his back whilst this is going on.He does not have to see the word on the paper for himself. He gains the info electronically. Live it all seems spontaneous.
To be fair, he did do "something" - when he started the trick he did suggest Rossy to pick a name, perhaps a place, something from his past - and sure enough he settled on the name of a place from his childhood.
Where can I start in learning what Derren Brown does? (not in front of an audience!)? I have already read - Derren Brown: Tricks of the Mind, Derren Brown: Mentalism tricks. Please don't put a link to his recommended books, I just want a good "step-by-step" guide to some of his tricks, I also do not want to have to pay for anything so a website or downloadable .pdf would be great, thanks
He may have done the same with Jonathan ross too. Someone told me he uses electronics. Something is written and its transmitted by bluetooth technology to a receiver before the show starts. So the persons is doing to has no idea how its done and the audience and viewers are not aware that anything was written beforehand.
No, the chess game wasn't a set up, or played with stooges or anything like that. None of the players were in on it, BUT it was a show of very, very good memory on Derren Brown's part. Because all the chess players were playing each other across, and Derren just remembered their moves. He says so himself in the video. So technically it's just an elaborate and impressive trick, but not a set up.

Derren Brown is indeed very good at what he does, he understands how these tricks work and has worked exceptionally hard in the past to work out how frauds and tricksters do what they do. He always maintains there's nothing magic or psychic in what he does and that's what makes him great.
Hasn't anyone noticed that he seem's to take the watch of Ross's right hand but when he gives it him back Ross goes to put it on his left hand!!! Why would someone put a watch back on a different hand?

Derren does his homework. He found out in advance what school the host of the show went to, and then he (through suggestion) made the guy think of it. If Derren asks you to pick a card, by the end of the trick, you will have forgotten what card you picked because he will plant the idea into your head that you picked something else: The card he designated for you. Just like the guy who wanted a "red bmx bike" but wrote down "leather jacket" instead (surely you've seen that one).
Well, yeah, the whole theme of the show is 'Christmas', they are dressed in Christmas clothes, so of course, it would be more likely he was thinking of a Christmas song.
@eternal000sunshine at 6.53 Jonathan was going to say something that Derren REALLY didnt want him to say which is why he interupted very quickly. Jonathan nearly gave the game away, dont think he meant to tho'.
Yes, I'm pretty aware of that. However, I was remarking on the cultural aspects of it. Maybe it's because the UK still has some Catholic and otherwise Christian infuence that my country does not have, which leads to the frequent use of such imagery. I just think it's funny and interesting. And I think he mentioned that his Christian friends at university though he wa meddeling with something unholy when he started with hypnotism.
It's true he can do that, but this clearly wasn't the case. He did nothing in that clip to suggest a school, and you can tell from how long it took him to guess it. He's done it many times with random strangers off the street too- how could he have looked them up? He's even explained to other people how to do it, so there's clearly a method to it, body language you have to interpret that reveals possible letters. So don't assume something when you haven't actually read into it.

Great to see. Lucky UK you have such good tele. Here in Germany it's shit now. Almost as total crap as USA. DB is a charmer as well as brilliant. Would have loved to see the whole show... beautiful, wonderful, deliciously delightful Joanna Lumley!
I just assume that he's been called 'The Devil' for a very long time. Probably at university when he started doing hypnotism on people, or at the restaurant where he worked the tables. It seems to be one of those things people like to say to magician/illusionist types, plus he has got that beard!
