Derren looks like a mind-reader, but he's not. He's actually a mind-writer. Whatever choice or thought you think you made on your own, Derren put it in there. Derren knows what card you selected because he made you choose that card. It's amazing, and I wish I could do that as well :) You think you have free will? Not around Derren :)
So if I quote someone, I'm copying someone else who has qouted the same person? Surely I'm copying the person who I'm qouting. Haha, you really are thick.
Absolutely fantastic! I tried the bmx thing on my Nan and I kept tapping her on the arm everytime that I shouted CAKE and I bought her a cake but unfortunately she wanted a shed...
And I tried it with my ex, but every time I'd tap her arm and say "just the car, that's enough", her divorce lawyer would slap my hand away, and yell "ALIMONY" in her ear. Too bad I didn't have Derren there to pat her lawyers arm and whisper "Jaguar XJ ..."
Notice how Darren reminded him about the feeling of finding the perfect thing, and once he was remembering that feeling he tapped his arm, that associated that feeling with the tap.
The tap that you guys are talking about comes from neurological linguistic programming and that tap is called an anchor a board-certified hypnotist can get that to work every time. And no it's not misdirection😊
On the last choice, Derren loudly says "Yes!". Pretending it was about his process, but IMO he was prompting/suggesting to Steven too choose yes? He did! And I knew he would!
The no/yes thing is one of my favorites, because there's definitely no trick to it. I think its totally forward. Lots of his stuff is based on misdirection, sleight of hand, common mentalism tricks, but that one is just straight up psychology.
Brown throws a hypnotic anchor... Pegg is showing all the signs of being a somnambulist so helping him forget having been a bit more helpful from a prior time wouldn't be too hard a task for an even half decent hypnotist. :-) The waffle is lovely though.
"Best thing is to ignore them for now, really." I've never immediately fallen in love with a throwaway line so easily. It immediately told me "therefore I need to pay attention to them.... except, no, he actually wants me to focus on them, that 's why he said that, they are a decoy.... except maybe *that's* what he wants me to..." This is some reverse psychology bullcrap, I'm sure, and I'm interested.
The thing he did with Simon Pegg is called a snap induction, most people think of hypnosis as the swinging watch and you are getting very sleepy, but that's not necessary. When someone reaches out to shake your hand your automatic response is to put your hand out too, you don't have to think, "oh this person is putting out their hand for me to shake I'd better do the same" it's just automatic, but when something other than what you're expecting happens like them grabbing your wrist your brain doesn't know how to react and boom you're in a hypotonic state.(a bit of an oversimplification, but there's plenty of videos on RU-vid on snap induction if you're interested)
It is amazing how old tricks still fool people. There was a guy in the 1930s who used to straighten bent spoons during his act (on Atlantic cruises). But that was before TV, so he never became famous.
I watched this years ago but I came back to watch it again. As I was watching it, I said 7 of clubs, 10 of clubs, jack of hearts. Strange. Didn't get them quite right but the last one was spot on for me.
Card, card, card, card, _ _ _ _ _, Brilliant! Or, did Steven impress upon me? I thought his card would be the 10d...I am utterly floored by Derren's seamless mastery.
Seeing the Simon Pegg moment it was like Derren was babysitting him and he was like....Who am I. Are you the chosen one who came for my redemption. Am I in the future...Are You God!!!!!! Lol!!!!
Dude... how is this man not ruling the world with an army of endless warriors ready to give their lives for him and all men and women not only kneeing but laying down so he can walk over all of us?
The BMX is quite easy to figure out. I actually guessed way before the reveal. He talks really quickly but in there I heard the words handle and bar almost together, and "beaming with excitement" (b-m-x) very early on. Once you hear the first clue the rest fly in from all directions.
They note was replaced, so obviously they read it. Duh. The subliminal nonsense is just his trademark he uses in many of his tricks and never has anything to do with the trick itself. It's just the "bullshit" explanation.
Matt Lucas cards were forced using NLP: 1) 6 of Clubs ---- DB says "pop up into your head" while making the shape of a playing card club with his hands! Then he asks him to remember the worst character he played which is Sir Bernard Stateley that ran for only SIX ten minute shows. Matt's talked before about this. As a comedy show actor you're judge by the networks on how many shows a series can run for so SIX is the most important number to him and is directly tied his character being a flop 2) 4 of clubs ---- DB moves on quick to keep the connection to the last card and while pointing at something solid "keys" nice K sound for cards and clubs, (NLP solid = firm choice = same as before), at the same time he's point he re-enforces it with "very interesting".. NLP pathway locked!.. now he asks what the 2nd card is.. not the NEXT card, but the second card, so he's basically asking tell me a card that is two more that the last one. At this point he's not expecting Matt to answer and almost messes it up cos most people would say 8 of clubs being two more than six but then when he pushes the keys and says you can have those "back" he's trying to switch it to six, however Matt actually says the number four before he stops him but after he says "back' so he quickly shift again to say "oh no i actually do need them".. aka stay with that answer. 3) jack of diamonds --- This ones pretty easy... DB starts off my asking him to confirm that these cards are coming "right out the top of your head as I'm talking to you right now", (plant cards with heads) He then puts those other cards together and pauses, slows down his speech to separate them from the LAST card. Ok the Jack is not LAST but close to the end of the deck to so head, end-of-deck.. King, Queen or Jack... ok so he knows Matt is Jewish and very proud of it and he laughs when Matt mentions Jesus cos it links in nicely to the Jewish question.. J being Jesus and Jewish and Jack, he says "right now" twice more and then asks if he's "Jewish, religiously so or not so religiously so", right then it's Jack and what suit... well the biggest Jewish RELIGIOUS symbol is the Star of David that looks a lot like a Diamond ( more so that any other suite anyway). DONE!
20:32 you can see Derren change out his real cigarette for the fake one with the card on it which was up his sleeve. He does this with his right hand while spreading the cards out with his left. Of course, the trick was meant for Stephen Fry who didn't see it so it is unfair with cameras. No bad thing to say about Derren Brown but thought some of you might be interested in seeing how that was done!
the bmx guy was very oblivious to the red room and the way derren's vocabulary changed when he started trying to convince him he included something to do with a bike that would make an odd sentence and may be completely unrelated to the conversation
I stopped it at 13:09 and IDK if Brown further reveals how he did it, but honest to God, this is the first time I have seen this particular stunt of his and I guessed he was going to say BMX bike because as I was watching it it became obvious to me that he was using NLP and each time Brown tapped him on the arm or wherever, it was to punch up a particular word or part of a word he was saying. I took note of what those words were as it was going along. I also noticed that he was not just babbling nonsense as he held his other hand to the table. He was locking him in and slightly hypnotizing him, and giving him the very clear suggestion that no matter what he had written down on that piece of paper beforehand, what he REALLY wanted was a BMX tat he had been suggesting to him rater overtly. e hypnotized him into simply believing that that overcame whatever he actually wanted. And then, if you notice, he taps him again and says a few key words to snap him out of the trance just prior to opening the envelope, leaving him with the resonating feeling (or in this case, post-hypnotic suggestion) that indeed he wanted a BMX all along. Just read up on NLP and hypnotism. Any of this can be easily done and is all the time. (Despite beliefs that one cannot be hypnotized against one's will). You most certainly can.....and are.
@Normal Misha Because then you have to explain how someone can forge both his handwriting and signature well enough to fool him while he's looking for anything to explain what could have happened, not to mention switch it into his wallet without him noticing
What he says when he's talking to him is epic.....he says words in a way to make things sound like bike and other things about said bike it's fuckin EPIC
Hi Derren, I’ve watched you live twice, Liverpool Empire Theatre and at Manchester Lowry, 2 completely different acts that left me talkless (injoke) Watched the JRE interview, moorish viewing.. and just this a.m watched ‘Infamous’ again, completely original, nothing regurgitated, just literally a truly unbelievable (in every sense) and funny performance, I said to my girl that I’d love have a coffee with you, no camera, microphones or anything, just having a chat, but let’s be true here, it’d be weird as all I’d do is look at you like I look at cake 😍 NOT cool.. I like all performers with acts like this, lover of card tricks too, but the difference between you and everyone else (not being derogatory at all) is that no one else makes me feel like I’m a kid watching Paul Daniels, as I get how the vast majority of acts are done, and even if I don’t, I’ll know there’s a process / gaff etc.. but watching you is like I’m a 6 year old with a little fro, never seen magic before and being COMPLETELY blown away. My Gran would always say when she was in Jamaica as a kid, some guy would do tricks with 3 stones, when he’d finish he’d always say ‘some carl it trick.. I carl it magic!!’ and I always say that just to add that extra level of mystery and leave my victims (coff) spectators bamboozled, as that’s how Paul Daniels made me feel. I’m now 46, and watching any of your acts leaves me totally bamboozled, and as an adult, who’s seen pretty much every act / gimmick / cgi effect etc but still a huge fan.. it’s the best feeling ever, so thanks, sincere thanks ok. I try explaining these things to folks but they just don’t get where I’m coming from. Shout out to Paul Daniels (and Debbie McGee) DickBrains Unite..!!👌🏾 DickBrain Facts.. < your next best seller right there..!! Just brilliant..
with the second trick. if Mickey and Ben taught me anything it's always account for variable change. should've changed his answer when he had the chance
@youweechup, a 'drop' means he physically dropped the card, in his lap. Stephen Fry begins at about 18:30. He had it on the table and dropped it. He then switched it for something else.
you mean when he was smoking ? yeah i know 100% how the fry trick is done from start to finish, doesnt really involve a card drop though, so thats why im confused.
Poorly worded on my part. He dropped the cigarette and had the card palmed, my mistake. I don't know how he pushed the idea of King of Hearts though. I would guess he 'pushed' the idea and showed the card, then palmed it while reaching for a cigarette. It's a great illusion. I think the camera person, the angle was the only reason I was able to catch it. I love Derren, just love that guy!
yeah its a great trick, the thing that elevates it is Derrens showmanship as is the case with all of his material, its one thing to be able to do it, but to do it REALLY well takes that extra something.
9:44 "even though two days before they said "I want x" what ever that is, or a really nice car like a BM - or a X-box , something like that. Something they really wanted" lel
That's so smart! Overstimulate the brain to the point when it doesn't know what to focus at, then you make a tap on the arm for everything you want him to pick up! That extra bit of stimulation makes your brain focus on the above average activity on those certain point, it's like flash driving your brain to make some parts of your binary brain more active. You litterally overload the brain to overload it a bit more to make certain things stick out... Omg i will try to learn this! This is pure genious!
AXELmetroidFAN also going for the handshake but breaking it midway through interrupts brain patterns and makes you docile and suggestible, and he also said "by creating" near when he did it, and it sounded like he said bike instead
I went for 5 of clubs in the first card one and queen of diamonds in the last one, I was trying to deliberately pick one that wasn't obvious, but in a split second. Doesn't explain how he gets it so precisely but I imagine he know the order of cards and displays them in a very diliberate way so people think I'll go for a not-obvious one to catch him out, or something. In the first one, you're supposed to choose the card underneath the one that sticks out, as he knows Matt Lucas's personality and that he'll try and go for something that isn't obvious.
I know this is an old comment, but I noticed that and I was wondering if anyone else noticed. I read the comments to find out and I can't believe it took so many comments to find someone else who caught it. LOL
3rd guy. ahhhhhhh!! I've watched enough darren brown to figure him out!!!!!!!!! Well of course the camera does shoes his hand :( but i did know it. He associates and reinforced the image of excitement, and he also crossed the idea of the car and an xbox. He also talked about replacing the image and etc etc. Similar to the converting an atheist thing. I love Darren Brown. He's awesome :) EDIT: o he explained it .-. lollll... i wrote this before he explained it lol
so from reading the comments and re watching it numerous times. it would appear that Fry is in on the act. the purpose of it, is not to trick or amaze Stephen Fry, he is in on it. but to slyly show us, how such tricks are done, by revealing clues that the casual observer may not pick up on at first watch. when Derren asks Stephen if he wants to light up, you can see him pull out a deck that gets taken by someone under the table @ 18:50. the K diamonds is prepared under the desk. it is already agreed by Stephen and Derren what card they are going to choose. you clearly see Derren drop the cigarette, and palm the already rolled up, and lighted K diamonds, prepared by the person under the table, who took the extra deck from Stephen. everything else, the acting etc is just fluff and misdirection.
For the Shaun of the Dead guy, I don't believe you could have done a memory revision. He must have written BMX bike and its more likely the piece of paper was swapped out and a new one was forged with the handwriting sample. *EDIT* Here is the reason: forgery is faster. You can only prove this as memory revision if you film the subject stating what they wanted as a child-hood present.
It's actually all to do with conditioning. He actually gives him subtle hints throughout the entire conversation and reinforces them. Pay close attention to the room, it's filled with objects that resemble a bike. Random sculptures, the tape recorder etc etc. The room is mainly white, with the exception of vivid spots of the colour red. Even the box itself has red dots on it. Notice the word play accompanied by the touches on the shoulder. "....handle, bar..." "too(two) tired bottle of wine" "Bike creating" "I want X" "BM or Xbox"
Watch Derren's actions: leaning forward, the unblinking stare, the repeated taps on the arm, the interrupted handshake where he pins Simon's hand to the table - he basically hypnotises him on the spot, then pumps him full of suggestions. He even tells him to "replace the memory". Incredibly skilful.
But I agree, Shaun, it would have been good to see Simon writing his wish beforehand. But the spectacle of the reveal is part of the fun, and it leaves other possible explanations in the mind of the audience.
LOL IT 1ST LOOKS LIKE HE LIGHTS A JOINT (JUDGING BY THE WAY IT WAS ROLLED),..THEN CAMERA BACK ON HIM ,IT TURNED INTO A CIG ,THEN HE DROPS IT FOR THE BURNING CARD LOL HE LIT IT FAST
So I would call myself a super skeptic, is that why I didn’t have any desire for a bike, or because I wasn’t getting the reinforced hits on the arm I guess?
