Once required reading for high school students, To Kill a Mockingbird now comes with trigger warnings. The book, which confronts and calls out the evils of racism, is considered by some to be too offensive for our modern-day woke sensibilities. Why? Set in 1930s Alabama, a young girl watches her attorney father defend a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Michael Knowles is joined by Derryck Green to discuss the powerful themes of this timeless American classic and why it should continue to be read (not banned).

On the note of disparate treatment in the eyes of the law: Tom and Boo aren’t just on the fringes of their society - they’re also the fringes of the color spectrum. Tom is described by Scout during the trial as being exceptionally dark skinned, and Boo is almost translucently pale from the amount of time he spends inside. They visibly correlate like yin and yang

I don't know if people realize Mockingbirds will sing all night. I worked nights and when I got off after midnight I'd sit in my living room with the window open and listen to a Mockingbird cutting the silence with its song. It kept me company and I looked forward to hearing him and missed him if he wasn't there. When I moved out one summer he was there in the midday singing his heart out like he was saying goodbye. I read TKAM at 14 when I had the flu and again 10 years ago. I read an unauthorized bio that claimed Harper Lee's mother ignored her because she was from a middleclass family (in those days they had servants and maids) and Harper, who was the 4th child of a country lawyer, lowered their income status. I figure that's why Scout grew up motherless.

Regarding the title: it’s not just about the sin of killing something that’s innocent. It’s also about the sin of killing something or someone that is making life better for others. It’s a sin to kill Mockingbird’s not because they stay out of the way, but because they produce music for people to enjoy. Tom is a Mockingbird in the sense that he went out of his way to help Mayella even though it ultimately wound up being his undoing due to the culture, and Boo is a Mockingbird for going out of his way to look after and even protect the Finch children, even if it comes at the cost of his exposure to the world around him when he prefer to remain private

Okay, I'll fess up: I'm one of those three Michael 🙋🏾 I watched the Film for a theater course in College back in the late 70s, then gain, I believe it was with sister, in the early 90s on TCM. I feel a twinge of guilt, because even though the Film was in itself a Masterpiece, I'm sure there's additional insights I missed by not reading and experiencing the words 📚 for myself.

The book is worth reading, even if you've already seen the movie, good as it is. I'm a fan of both, but the book is much richer.

Only book I read more than once. In the film version, Gregory Peck was the embodiment of my vision of Atticus. Also, Robert Duvall's first acting role as Boo, I believe.

A powerful scene in the book, and the movie, for that matter, was the scene where Atticus is camped out in front of the town jail house late at night, expecting trouble. The children follow him, secretly, because they sense something is afoot. They're about to leave because they see that he's okay, when a mob of men appear and tell Atticus they want the prisoner, and for him to stand aside. It is up to Atticus to confront the mob, and protect his client Tom Robinson. But the men don't accept Atticus' arguments, and are about to become violent. Jem approaches to shield Atticus, who is momentarily distracted by Jem's disobedience, and then realizes that Scout and Dill are there too. Scout and Dill do not understand what is happening, and Scout greets a member of the mob politely saying, "Hey Mr. Jacobs!" "I go to school with your son Cecil." Without realizing it, Scout has dispelled the demon that took hold of the mob, and they slowly file away. A mob must be anonymous, or they could never face their community unmasked. That is why the current mobs are masked.

Guy on the left gets an F. When the sheriff and Atticus(sp) talk about who killed Bob it was NOT because they feared Boo would be hung / convicted. It was because he (boo) would be treated like a hero by the city, be barraged by visitors and gifts. For petes sake 4th graders get this fact edit to add... Holy popcicles!!!!!!!! You got WORSE! You claim Bob didn't deserve to die... I'm stunned. The man was attempting to, at bare minimum MURDER Two children and possibly do further evil to based on his proclivities and 'attack (youtube banned 'r' word) of his own daughter. How can you say that Lethal force was not just in that moment!

I don't get people wanting to ban certain words from books and TV. I am okay with it so long as it is being used for a point and appropriately. Letting bad people say bad things in art is called an accurate portrayal. While I actually hate cussing and don't cuss, I am okay when it is used in movies appropriately to paint an image realistically. My ears burn, however, when I hear people who are catholic or Christian say the f word because they are betraying the image they claim to represent.

I think you'll find that, yes, the Bible does look favourably upon incest and rape. Just look at Lot's daughters, for instance. God didn't torch them or even turn them to salt for that.
