A Milestone Towards Energy Efficiency in Seawater Desalination
The ITC, in collaboration with private companies and supported by the Canary Islands Agency for Research, Innovation, and Information Society (ACIISI) of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the DESAL+ project (Interreg MAC Program 2014-2020), has designed a reverse osmosis plant with the lowest possible energy consumption in the market (simulations indicate a consumption of 1.85 kWh/m³ compared to commercial developments that reach 2.35 kWh/m³), and now needs to validate this design on an industrial scale. This project aims to undertake the construction of an experimental reverse osmosis rack under the design criteria established by the ITC in an existing desalination plant in the Canary Islands that requires retrofitting.
This project has been funded as part of the European Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, under the Recovery Assistance for Cohesion and the Territories of Europe (REACT-EU) program, within the Canary Islands ERDF Operational Program 2014-2020, under the "NEXT GENERATION" European Recovery Instrument (Exp. SD-2111).
