Join George and John as they discuss and debate different Philosophical ideas. In this video they will be completing the discussion on Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy and looking into the sixth and final meditation.
In this video they will look at Descartes acceptance of the existence of a material world. As Descartes started off the meditations in a state of full doubt, by the end his fully believes in a physical external world. Is he justified in believing so, and is his reasoning sound?
In addition to this Descartes discusses the relation between mind and body. This is known as the Dualist mode of thought. Is the mind and body separate, and is it right to agree that if they are separate they can still intermingle.
Watch as George and John debate the final meditation in the series.

This is a really helpful video, but I noticed that Elizabeth of Bohemia is not cited in the same way that Hobbes and Locke are, despite Elizabeth raising the main concern about how the mind and body can interact if they are separate substances.

interesting that dualism went out of fashion with the advent of psychology, psychoanalysis , biochemistry etc but looks to be re-entering the picture now with virtual reality etc.

So sorry! It was a busy couple of weeks and there was delays in getting the video out 😔 The animation takes time so it's hard to keep to a consistent schedule. Will try not to leave such a big gap again. So glad you are enjoying the videos though 😁

Excellent video. I agree with the last point, that Descartes argument is only logical with the assumption that an omniscient and benevolent God created the universe. But what if we are in a simulation and our senses are being deceived not by God, but by something else or some kind of non benevolent creator? Can you do a video on Solipsism? Descartes said "I think, therefore i am" but can you explore the idea of "I observe, therefore I am". Because some would argue that we can not even be entirely sure that we are the true authors of our thoughts, they would say that thoughts pop into our mind, and we merely observe the thought seconds after our brain made the decision, giving the illusion that we are thinking. I know that somewhat gets into the free will vs determinism and axiom of causality debates that you've already covered.

Abrahamic religions would claim that God is a deceiver. Stories like the Binding where God does deceive and test Abrahams faith. "it is prudent never to trust completely those who have deceived us even once", this would nullify Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc. Right?

Why did Rene believe God can’t be a deceiver?
@paterfamiliasgeminusiv4623
@paterfamiliasgeminusiv4623 3 года назад
Because there is a certain imperfection inherent in deception. For instance, why would you need to deceive if you are all-powerful? You can just make things be. He also adds a moral argument that deception is bad essentially but I found that less convincing.

Hi! I was wondering why the objection against Descartes argument about how it is possible for the two to interact if they are separate and distinct and totally different was not strong. Is it because you can conceive of a way between the two to interact?

As a Christian I believe everything has a tripartite nature. It's my belief that philosophy and science both suffer from what I call the oneness fallacy.
