Desert Survival Food: Yucca Fruits -Junkyard Fox

Later Spring/Early Summer is the time when Yucca fruits are plentiful. Having been consumed in the american southwest for centuries, these small treats are great sources of carbohydrates and fiber. I gather a few to roast over a fire, an excellent desert-survival food source.

I know u wrote this 3 years ago and I hope u r doing good. but if u r still homeless, try to make ur way to a big city cuz here in San Diego we have places that will help the homeless to get back on their feet and I think that almost all big cities have such a place to help. but either way I hope u r doing good and have found ur happiness:)

I'm really happy I found this channel because I'm planning on moving to the southwest sometime really soon. Especially after playing Fallout NV, it made me really wonder about all the botanical bounty found in the desert after scavenging in-game. Thanks for showcasing your knowledge about these things!

These are Navajo food. Yaca fruits... there are 2 kinds of yacas that are delicious. Why does coming from another part of North America matter ...you sound like you have hatreds for Navajos... actually there's more Anasazi in their DNA.

They grow here in Tennessee, so I'm guessing you should have no trouble finding them in Arkansas. But be warned: some yuccas contain toxic amounts of saponins (which is why they can be made into soap). If you plan to eat them, boil them with at least three changes of water.

The flowers are really good depending on the species and when you eat them. The yucca in San Diego county has pretty tasty flowers. The fruit has to be eaten at just the right time or they get so bitter you can't eat them. Awesome seeing the badger. I've only ran into bears, coyotes and bob cats. Luckily have never ran into a mountain lion.

The BEST thing I ever ate was Pack rat, do you happen to have a video on this. He had some small corn tortillas and salsa ,,,,, YUMM!!

Great video ! I've watched it a few times just to catch all the details. I hope you know how many lives you touch by sharing this information. I'm a retired engineer and finally living outy dream of living off grid. I believe society has become consumers and need to wake up to the creative marketing techniques that keep so many there at the cost of their health. I grew up on a dairy farm up by lake superior where we grew our own garden and bought very little from the store. Picking wild berries and catching wild trout and pike was fun but also very healthy. I'm building a flexible form rammed earth house from my land. It makes perfect Adobe and has been used for houses some as old as 130 years here. I'm using some earthship ideas with no heating or cooling required also. I hope to forage this spring when my work slows down and your channel is a great start. You've earned my subscription and keep the videos coming. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you.
