Andy, I like to watch your videos! I have a suggestion though: Would it be possible to do in a tank model those anti-tank weaponry impacts? Meaning, like anti-tank round has hit the armor but not penetrating it. Or anti-tank round ricocheting off from the armor, leaving kind of a embedded streak in it. And so on? I am not building models, but by watching your videos, I have been thinking that these ammunition impacts might be done with soldering iron, maybe? Or maybe even a diorama with a disabled tank having those clear penetrations and insane scorch marks in the vehicle and on the ground around, in front of busted-up and wrecked building, shell holes in ground etc etc. I hope you get the idea I am looking for here :)

Dear Andy, Thanks for sharing excellent modeling tips. In video 2:00, you make a coat of hairspray. Is it feasible to use Tamiya LP22(lacquer-based) instead? Thanks

This was a very helpful video for me. I am going to test my skills on some older models. If I don't have any Tamiya TS80, is there another clear coat product that I can use?

Andy, On the first model can you tell me what the point of the hairspray is ? You have the acrylic flat matte coat on top of the german grey paint to protect the german grey paint. So i dont get the point of the hairspray. Is the hairspray helping you remove the brown paint when you use the brush with water ?

I have noticed that when 'chipping' it is always done in black. As far as I know, the Germans never used black as a top or a primer coat ???

For my models I use REAL rust. I put a roll of fine steel wool into a quart jar and cover it with vinegar. After about a month or two I pour the liquid into a stainless steel photo developer tray (mine are 10X14) and wait for it to completely dry. After it is all dried out I then take a single edged razor scraper and scrape all the rust out of the tray. It usually comes out as a fine powder. Some batches come out orange rust and if left a little longer I get a deep red rust. I then store my rust in little snuff containers. When I get ready to use it I mix it in a communion cup (great little mixing cups) with some alcohol, a little Elmer's glue and a dab of water soluble glycerin. I then paint it on my model with a small paint brush and finally top coat with dull coat acrylic. Really makes the model look like metal. Sometimes I will make a wash out of my rust and paint it all over the model to give the plastic a metallic look. Works great for me and looks realistic 'cause it's REAL rust.

When you stipple the buff colour with water, is the buff colour fully dry/cured/hardened (ie a day or more), or is it within a few minutes of the buff going on?

Thanks for all of the very informative and entertaining videos. I have recently gotten back into modeling and using an airbrush. I'm not having good results. The paint ends up as a fine powder residue on all surfaces. I tried diluting with thinner as you suggested with Tamiya paints (2 Paint to 1 thinner) but get terrible results. Any suggestions? Tks

@pa-steli
@pa-steli 7 лет назад
placid renegade from what I know you can do chipping using a really fine (thin) paint brush and/or deform the model by cutting it or using a lighter to bend the plastic, but don't my word for the second one. Also this lighter thing needs some experience and steady hands, so I would recommend having some assistance or avoiding this method completely. In the end though the best way is to experiment and do some good research, but keep in mind the ones I mentioned above and don't take really big risks... your welcome....I guess? :)
