Thks so so much fr uploading this n sharing it w us! Desi stil look amazing!! Aft the I Love Lucy show he seldom appear on TV, it's so nice to see him on other shows. I enjoyed watchin n fav it! =)
Stage-magic can be created out of simple concepts, as long as you have 2 pros like Mr. Durante & Mr. Arnaz creating it. Conveying carefree-joy & a humorous attitude toward life is most engaging & infectious, making one feel glad to be alive. These fellows knew how to do it; Jimmy, in particular, being the supreme master. It's wondrous that so many of his late-career performances were captured for posterity on film in the TV Age!
@@teo5836 I’m reading Keith Thibodeaux’s memoir (Little Ricky on “I Love Lucy”), and he became a born-again Christian in his 20’s. I’d think he would have mentioned in his book if Desi and Lucy practiced the occult, but maybe he wouldn’t have known since he was only a kid - although he did remain friends with Desi Jr even after the show ended, well into his teens. I did find it disturbing that in Lucy’s memoir there isn’t a single mention of God. In Desi’s memoir he does mention God a couple times, when he was in a desperate situation and prayed, but if God had been a major presence in Desi’s life, I’d think he would have said so.
@@julietteyork6293 he was into Santeria heavily. That Cuban/African song he’d sing “Babalu” is about the (g)od/ Orisha “Babalu Aye”. Babalu Aye is the (g)od of pestilence, infectious diseases, and healing. Desi was well over his twenties singing this song on National television to audiences worldwide who didn’t even know what they were listening to. Santeria is a form of witchcraft. A lot of people were once Christian, and also claim to be. Doesn’t mean they are.
A backstory to this encounter is that Durante was a mob favorite, and after Arnaz’s rum running father moved his family from Cuba to Miami, his pal Al Capone drew Desi into the family and Arnaz became a playmate of Al’s son, Sonny Capone. But it was Arnaz who produced The Untouchables series about Chicago Jazz Age gangsters that so infuriated Al’s widow that she sued Desilu for damages. She lost.
His father was the Mayor of his town and his mother's family were owners of Bicardi Rum. When Batista took power in Cuba, Desi's father was jailed and their property confiscated. Desi went to Miami (he didn't speak any English) and went to a Jesuit school because he was going to a Jesuit school in Cuba. He met Sonny Capone at school and they became friends because they were both outcasts (hard to believe now but no one spoke Spanish in Florida in the 1930's).
Why not, u do t have to look old just cause your gray comes in. He looks delicious I wish I could have met him in person. Hes Cuban my dad was Puerto Rican and I love the Spanish accent. Oh my goodness gonna watch this again
the don't have comedians/actors like they did back then: Jack Paar, Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, the Rat Pack, Bob Hope, George Burns & blessings out to Danny Thomas who gave his $ to start St. Jude's Hospital.
Elizabeth Roberto He drank because he was 2nd hand to lucy and people recognize him as the bongo player on the show and not the brains and that's thats why he turned to drinking.
That was the days of classy entertainment! Unfortunately those days are far and few between, now were gang banging and wearing our pants falling off!! Class is extinct...
Desi gave Jimmy the opportunity to film several of his "TEXACO STAR THEATER" shows at Desilu while he was appearing in Las Vegas during the spring and summer of 1955....he also convinced Jimmy to appear as a guest on an episode of "THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW" in 1968 (where everyone was doing a Durante impression!). They were good friends...
@LEIMALOCCA I know ;-) He looked 'old' in a 1967 Mothers-in-Law cameo, and REALLY looked bad when he guested SNL in the later 70's (sans the Clairol)....
