Desi Arnaz was an entertainer that came to America from Cuba at a young age and found success on television alongside his partner Lucille Ball. Together, the two starred in the hit show I Love Lucy, which ran for six seasons throughout the 1950s. The two each gave their all to their respective comedic performances on the show. However, there was one particular line that Desi refused to cross over the course of the show’s run due to strong personal beliefs.

Desi was born in the early 20th century, and his father was the mayor of the second-largest city in Cuba. While this gave young Desi a life of relative ease during his early years, the 1933 Cuban Revolution put an abrupt end to that luxury during the young star’s teenage years. The revolution found his father imprisoned by revolutionaries. Desi’s family was able to free his father, but they were then forced to flee to America. Knowing none of the wealth that they were accustomed to in Cuba, the family was forced to work their way up. They made a living cleaning canary cages and doing other small jobs, allowing Desi to eventually work his way up to becoming the successful performer he became known as.
While these struggles could have made the young Desi grown into a bitter adult, they instead instilled a sense of wonder in the man about the possibilities provided by America to immigrant families such as his. Desi soon became a gigantic patriot and a vocal supporter of the American dream, always maintaining a strong work ethic.
Desi also had other values instilled in him at childhood, and some of these weren’t as positive as his beliefs in hard work and the American dream. He adamantly believed that a woman should be subservient to a man in a marriage, and this hurt his personal relationship with his costar and wife Lucille Ball. Lucille has recalled instances during their marriage where Desi’s personal beliefs got in the way of her happiness, eventually causing the marriage to dissolve. Whether right or wrong, Desi always adamantly stood for his own personal beliefs. Join Facts Verse as we explore why Desi Arnaz refused to film this I Love Lucy scene.

Favorite Desi moment was when he recited Little Red Riding Hood in Spanish. For that, he should have won an Emmy. Followed closely by his temper tantrum when Lucy got him fired from MGM while pretending to be his agent. He was an innovator and genius.

@@NancyR.A. He never won an Oscar, but I don't think that it was due to prejudice. That doesn't mean that I'm pretending that he never faced discrimination, but I don't think that's why he didn't win an Emmy. He was a brilliant businessman and was responsible for many of the behind-the-scenes decisions that made "I Love Lucy" a success, but truth be said, he didn't have the raw talent that Lucy, Ethel or Fred had. A similar parallel can be drawn to Sonny and Cher. Sonny was the brains behind Sonny and Cher, but Cher had the raw talent and therefore received the accolades. By the way, since when has having black hair and brown eyes make anyone a victim of discrimination? Do you think that all Americans are blue-eyed blonds? Back in the 1950's, being dark was a plus. That's one of the reasons that women loved Cary Grant and Clark Cable so much! They were "tall, dark and handsome."

@@razojacqueline Lucy and Desi made the show, but we are talking about Desi on his own. He wasn't a bad actor, was a brilliant businessman and was a good straight man to Lucy's comedian, but I'll say it again, he was not as talented as Vivian Vance or William Frawly. Yes, dark skinned people were seen as inferior and had to abide by segregation rules, but Desi was not dark skinned as in nonwhite. He was dark skinned as in Italian or Greek. He was a mediterranian decendant man which is the reason he coud marry Lucy in 1940 and his marriage license lists him as white. Seriously, I think that you need glasses if you think that Desi was darker than an Al Pacino or Sylvestor Stallone type of Italian.

My all-time favorite scene with Desi was the time he and Lucy did the Nelson Eddy/Jeanette McDonald parody to "The Waters of the Minnetonka". The expression on Desi's face is hilarious when he realizes he is actually singing to Lucy and not the band singer. Priceless. Desi had his bad points, but I'll always remember the respect and appreciation he showed to the United States. I've always understood that Desi's family's escape from Cuba in and of itself was extremely dangerous, and they would have been executed if caught. But thank God they made it to Florida. I also remember seeing Desi make an acceptance speech for an award (an Emmy I think) and said "Thank you America". He sat down next to Ed Sullivan and burst into tears. Desi also tried to enlist in the U.S. military when World War II broke out The only reason they didn't take him was because he hadn't gotten his citizenship yet. Desi got his citizenship and then enlisted successfully as a way of saying thank you to the United States. He was a patriotic American.

One episode that always made me cry was the one where Lucy found out she was going to have a Baby. She had tried to find Ricky all day and kept missing him. Finally he was playing at the club that nite and she went there. He comes out singing a Lullabaye SP? and stops at each table that had a couple. Each couple shook their head no. He gets to Lucy who is sitting alone and he says something like "Hey Honey I didn't know you were here." He starts to walk on and does a double take and points at her and says "YOU!?" And she nods yes and he goes crazy saying "It's ME! We're going to have a Baby!" And when he's hugging her from behind you see the real tears in her eyes since she really was pregnant. I don't know if that was the episode but he sang "We're Having A Baby My Baby and Me". That makes me lose it every time. Real life seen on tv.....They were so happy. :-)

It used to be rumoured that she used that episode to tell Desi about her real pregnancy with Desi Jnr (he already knew lol). She and Desi had actually had it written into the show to fit her pregnancy (they had to fight for it, the networks were super strict about showing pregnancy and inferring that married couples actually had sex 🤣). The night the episode of little Ricky’s birth aired, it was one of their biggest ever tv audiences and that same night Lucille Ball gave birth to Desi Jnr so it boosted their ratings massively. If I recall, they were one of the first if not THE first to ever depict pregnancy on a sitcom - something that these days is done very commonly. They kind of paved he way for a lot of future sitcoms.

Desi was an addict: sex, booze and gambling. By the time he was in his mid-40's he looked like he was 60 - bloated, lined and just plain worn out. Yes, he was intelligent, creative, and earlier he was sensual and appealing. However his addictions caught up with him early and he lost everything: his marriage, his abilities to put out creative products and to continue as the Head of the Studio. Lucy was 5 or 6 years older and died less then 3 years later. So both gone too soon. The heavy smoking they both did is why I’m sure they died younger then they should have.

Its a shame Desi cheated on Lucy so many times, he even went with hookers.. or call girls whatever they were called back then.. I never understood people saying they had a great love for one another, you do not love someone when you cheat on them all the time.. that is not Love.. I am sure Lucy Loved him though.. however I did always like them as a couple, its just too bad Desi always cheated..

I love Lucy is my all time favorite show. Desi and Lucy were great together, even off the show but they had their issues. Never heard of control issues, but the infidelity and drinking is what ended their marriage. Thank you for the effort but this video was not very accurate and a little drawn out. Desi had great talent and made the show as much as Lucy. Again great together.

That was the main reason. He was also an alcoholic with a nasty temper and they constantly fought. He constantly cheated on Lucy and she couldn't take it anymore. From about 1956 to the end of The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour, they were no longer talking to each other.

Lucy couldn't have tried any harder. It's near impossible to survive a marriage to a serial cheater. Once you can forgive, but constant betrayal cannot survive. The love between them was there, but he couldn't battle his demons.

One who knows Hollywood minds has to wonder if the writers were Jealous and wanted to sabotage Ricky Ricardo as well as Cuba by such an action. His wisdom to adamantly say NO I'm sure far superceded the explanation given. In Certainly glad for the first half of this giving the Positive View of Ricky Ricardo instead of the usual Negative pathological View often given by bitter women and accepted by the Feminist minds and pushed forth on societies making All men look bad. Very good on the first half. You started down the road of the Negative view on the second half and I received a phone call at the time and won't listen to any Negative.

It was called "The Sergeants' Revolt" (Spanish: Revuelta de los sargentos), also called the Cuban Revolution of 1933, was a coup d'etat that occurred in Cuba in September 1933. It began as a revolt of sergeants and enlisted men in the military, who soon allied with student activists in the Directorio Estudiantil Universitario.

I think that they tried to make their marriage work - but Desi was an addict, sex, gambling and booze. While he was incredibly charismatic (but when drunk his temper could be explosive) also he had a sex addiction, more than just having some affairs. Lucy went to a therapist in NYC and wanted Desi to join. He only went for a bit and felt that he did not need it. He only joined AA towards the end of his life, but by then it was too late as his was in bad health. Lucy obviously was getting bitter and then put a wall up to steel herself from hurt. I think they always loved each other but could no longer stay married. It is sad, but the fortunate part is that they became friendlier to one another once they divorced and stayed close to the.end of Desi's life. Also, both entered into successful 2nd marriages that lasted. However Desi's 2nd wife at one point considered getting divorced, one may assume for the same addiction reasons. Desi had two wives who loved him but the issue was his addictions which he did not try to curtain - always said he never learned moderation.

There is one point that I was confused about (it also came up in the movie Being the Ricardos Desi is yelling at Lucy about communism and how they came after his family during the Revolution. It was not a communist revolution but a fascist revolution when Batista took over control and finally backed by the US. The Revolution where Fidel Castro (who was a communist) and supported by his people against Batista came much later in 1959.

You can't respond with alcoholic men, speacially if they hit you. He didn't hit her, but the fact that he had rage. Oh! No, no, no. She wanted peace and I don't blame her. I lived with a man that was an alcoholic for 33 yrs. In the begging he was just having a few beers (6) but it graduated to 48 a night. Idk, how he managed.🤔

@@CashelOConnolly Great-great granny? You sure are young! (You don't understand American culture from that time period.) (Caveat: "TV culture"...that which was portrayed on television...was a "parody of real life in this country": that PARODY (i.e., with screeching voices) was part of the shtick. Gracie Allen (although not a screech owl) and George Burns also "played off of each other". It was what kept people glued to the radio...and TV.

Uh, pretty sure it was Desi's drinking and fooling around that ended that marriage. He was a brilliant guy, but, like Lucy told Barbara Walters when she was 66, he could construct an empire, but then had to deconstruct whatever he'd built. He had to lose . . . If you've ever known an addict, even a highly functioning one, you know it's an old story.
