Have a question on ANYTHING to do with succulents? Go to debraleebaldwin.com and browse the menu or use the Search bar. Btw, my site is not monetized---no annoying pop-up ads. It's my gift to my followers and the culmination of my career as a horticulturist/photojournalist specializing in succulents. You'll find 100+ pages of tips and ideas; thousands of photos and must-know facts for specific varieties; curated design ideas for gardens, landscapes and containers; interviews with experts; seasonal info; and much more. Use the site as a research tool that also is entertaining---the same goal as my RU-vid channel. Q's welcome!

It all works. Cool and warm colors. The repeating geometries of plants, framed beds, and even the cast shadows. Exciting, yet serene. A satisfying paradox-garden defined.🌵

Hi Jim, it depends. If you're east of I-15 (like I am), it gets into the triple digits in August and Sept. If you're west of the 15 (as this garden is), you have a maritime climate that's not as hot in the summer nor as cold in the winter.

It would be good to know in which part of which country, in which weather conditions you grow the garden. What are winter temperatures in Celcius?

If you were paying attention she said north San Diego County; rarely gets below 35°F at night but can get to 100°F on summer days, with cool, moist on-shore flows by evening

Lovely garden, great inspiration for a succulent design. I'm wondering what the clumping of pale green plants that look about 1ft high are...Caralluma perhaps or some sort of Euphorbia? I'd love to know so I could try to source some for my garden

I am collecting succulents and I want to create a succulent garden, but my biggest fear is to lose them all during rainy times. I live in Cali, Colombia, usually very hot and dry, but we also have periods of two or three weeks raining every day, after a couple of months with no rain. I'm thinking of digging deep wholes and them fill them up with soil with lots of sand and perlite and plant them there... I hope I won't lose them. Especially because my uncle wants to hire me to make a Succulent and cactus garden for his country house.

Don't use fine sand, but rather large-grained "sharp" sand (meaning when you rub it between your fingertips it feels sharp). Examples are decomposed granite sand and "builder's sand" sold at home improvement stores. Perlite has a tendency to float to the surface when the ground is flooded; a better choice is pumice, a volcanic rock used in horse stalls to absorb excess water during storms. Also plant atop mounded soil so that water drains away from roots, not in swales (valleys) where water puddles. You also might want to rig a temporary roof for the plants during your rainy season; see the article on my site, "Succulents and Too Much Rain: A French Solution." debraleebaldwin.com/caring-for-succulents/succulents-and-too-much-rain-what-to-do/

U could cover them
@georgielancaster1356
@georgielancaster1356 2 года назад
You could plant them in beds that mound, put the most likely to suffer in pots, or raised beds in general. Or with any luck, if there is a slope in the garden, drain away the water to a greener bog garden or even a pond.0

I have a place in my cottage garden that receive 8+ of full sun , so i suggested to plant a succulent garden there , but on my great surprise i realised that most of them had problem with full sun all day!....i asked a gardener who sells plants and told me that they prefer to keep succulents inside nursery in summer , and out when sun is not so strong after summer!...(notice i live in 10a zone Athens Greece).....so, what do you think? can't i have my succulent garden in summer ,as that is the period i am mostly in my cottage..
@QueenofSucculents
@QueenofSucculents 7 лет назад
You can grow whatever you like, but give those succulents from South Africa (as opposed to the desert Southwest of the US) half a day of sun only, ideally morning (because of heat issues) or grow them in dappled shade.
@georgielancaster1356
@georgielancaster1356 2 года назад
You might have to set up some semi shade - wood, rather than metal, as they will get red hot in the sun and ramp up heat. Maybe some batten sections or put up pergolas, with vines?

How does one stop creatures digging up our succulents in pursuit of ants and other bugs?
@QueenofSucculents
@QueenofSucculents 5 лет назад
I'd be glad if a critter went after ants and other harmful insects that infest my succulents. And not all bugs are bad. Yours is an "it depends" question with answers as varied as the creatures themselves. But in general: Set traps or create barricades.
