Design Theory: Visual Library 

No I'm not procrastinating, I'm ✨expanding my visual library✨

That blueprint has now officially entered my hard visual library

Also, I still wait for the day when a Sinix artbook comes out

What I´m gonna take way from this vid -always do studies of the things you enjoy - do things that expand your visual library in a good way -your visual library is important for developing your own style

You have opened my mind, now i want to draw even more, i was feeling like crap about everything that i was doing, now i realize it's because i was doing just anatomy studies for months, i wasn't doing many personal projects or anything creative, because my mind was stuck on studies, and just studies, you made remember that i fell in love with drawing, copying dragon ball cards, but now copying unconsciously feels like cheating. I will start copying (being mindful) other artists that i love!, Love u sinix

If it's one thing I've taken away from listening to Chiu Streams its that all the top-tier artists in the industry tend to be "students of life." They're amazed by everything that life has to offer and study it and it shows in their creations.

This is fantastic! It's hard to find good discussions on the theoretical side of art, and now I've a better idea of /why/ building a mental library is important and how to continue that work. Thanks!

Yay, more design theory! Thanks for the informative video as always Sinix. Good to hear I've been working on some of the right stuff, I've spent the past few days studying artists I follow to try and ingrain some of their style in my head and learn something from it.

This is my first video from you and i commend you dearly for bot only articulating the tenants of visual design most amateur artists are struggling with but also in relating specific ways of implementing a balance between a masterful grasp of the fundamentals, plus a good harvest of intellectual flexibility ( i see you there with the Gravity's rainbow book to which i think most your viewers probably overlooked) would greatly increase one's visual library, and to which i myself am doing my best to do so hopefully comparable to, but not exactly as crazy as, kim jung gi. What a Great video!

Bad and Good Sinix. After watching your sketchbook tour and "About Sinix" video i understood it.

Great video and I can see where you're coming from with the idea that creativity itself doesn't exist as a metaphysical thing. I agree! But it can also exist as a conceptual thing, without literally being random (or without being attributed to something supernatural or extraphysical). The idea is that you 'create with intent'. In a sense creativity is a mental concept. It shouldn't be looked upon as a goal or even a tool. Exploring chaos and turning that into a design == creativity at work. Designing iterations of a very tight render is probably a similar kind of creativity, but using different tools or approaches. It's probably a more methodical and less rigorous approach to designing from chaos and not really caring too much about what you've created already. Also, not to talk negatively about one of the most technically skilled concept artists I've come across, but Scott Robertson definitely is one of those designers who loves to iterate on successful versions of previous designs. He loves to change familiar concepts with steps of maybe 4-5% at a time if you know what I mean. :-) One could make a fair point about how that's a bit 'less creative' and 'more methodical' than exploring full on chaos and 'creatively' turning a mess into a design with less of an end goal in sight from the start. I'm guessing that's what you were thinking about with Kim Jung Gi. I do believe Kim Jung Gi might be using a third type of approach to his designs. Which is a kind of pre-visualisation of what he is about to draw. I don't know if he has some type of photographic memory that aids him in doing this or if it is simply skill mastered over years, but he seems very capable of just drawing things in one go as if it was all planned for from the start. Impressive, but I'm guessing most of the designing is already done inside his head lol.

This is partly why I want to pickup art / visual design. It's highly interesting to me on its own but I also see it as an invaluable tool for improving my game designs. In the most literal sense of creating better visual worlds / interfaces but also in the more abstract creative sense. Expanding my conceptual design muscles will likely help immensely when it comes to abstract thinking and coming up with new creative ideas. I also really like the thought of coming up with stronger aesthetics and vibes to give my games more character. I feel that pursuing art would help immensely.

Hey Sinix! So taking photos of the environment (clouds, trees etc) will help with the soft aspect of my visual library if I'm aiming to be an environmental illustrator right? I keep taking pictures of cloud formations sometimes while noting how the sun reflects off of them!

I struggle a lot with my visual library. My brain, the conscious part at least, has aphantasia. I don't see any images in my brain, I can't retain or recall anything beyond a very fleeting or blurry idea, even important things. It's extra frustrating when it comes to my art as I am very good at drawing from life and reference, but can't really create anything from pure imagination. However I've generally found that if I draw something from reference enough, I can retain it. If I consume enough of a kind of art or style, I will sometimes dream derivative images that I try to jot down, and in general I will "understand" the structures of those images more.

Y'know, behind the memes and jokes; Sinix is really just a memey jokester. Quality video though, thank you.

Great Video. also i have question: i found some games make skill better almost direct in some profession (like stellaris in management, and factorio in programming, and Jrpg in skill of patience), But in art i have nothing found of some type games. can you recommend some games?
