I think the OG Blood Angels are good when they do some of the things we talk about but mostly when they have those different elements like the Sanguinary Guard and the Death Company - Cal
I enjoy the blood angels a lot. In my mind, they're the chaos legion who wasn't. They lose control easily, they're sensitive to human emotions and especially fear, they lost their primarch and their homeworld, they've been under heavy scrutiny from their very inception, they thirst for human blood, they should have turned at a million different points in their history and somehow they're *still* not just loyal to the imperium but one of the few groups in the game I'd actually call heroic. They have an entire successor chapter who are known for taking catastrophic losses because they insist on protecting civilians over pursuing mission objectives.
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow that makes sense, well covering a chapter and their individual exploits and what makes them somewhat different from other chapters would be awesome
It was so good to see Sunny find her legion, and her disgust with the Primaris version. This was a great episode, thank you for taking the time to cover so much.
I also very excited to find my legion! I think it was because I could relate to it artistically, it made the creative juices flow for the redesigns. Which I was quite happy about, but I am even happier that you guys are enjoying them as well ~ Sunny
Thank you so very much we obviously put a lot of effort into it and we are glad to hear that you enjoyed it. The Tomb Armour was difficult to get right - Cal
I know this red viper character I have heard that they have terrorized Florida for some time, and was once seen in Chicago but, that could have been a copy cat - Cal
I think it’s worth noting that the blood angels are one of those chapters that has been decimated at least once so some of their original culture is going to be lost by the time primaris reinforces their ranks. I think narratively the blood angels and their successors are one of the more interesting legions because they have such tragedy and shame after the heresy. The black accents I think suits them within that context, they are not as much a proud and regal legion but one In perpetual mourning and shame in losing their primarch. (Sanguinius is just that great a figure that they are lost without him) That aside this video is great, dare I say the best in this series so far.
I love Yours designer vs lore videos. But I need to clarification one thing: gold trim on post heresy pauldron is reserved for 2nd company on codex complaint chapters. 3rd had red trim, 4th green, 5th black, 6th mustard, 7th purple, 8th grey, and 10th had none trim
@@WhatareyouPaintingnowbelieve that. GW is not very consistent with using their own lore, but company markings is one thing that stuck in my mind since I saw my fist codex in 3rd edition 😅
Yeah there was actually quite a bit even I was surprised when Sunny busted it out but it is to be expected with the Blood Angels, being all artsy and thirsty ever so thirsty - Cal
Hey kid, do you know why cherry blossoms turn red? Because there's a dead body burried under it! Or at least in Japan they say the blood creates that color. Not sure what that has to do with BA 🤷♂️ Sorry I'm late to the party but that was a really fun episode. Thanks guys!
Primaris Marines have gutted the core aesthetic appeal of 40k, in my own potentially/probably pretentious artist opinion. They closer resemble Star Wars Clone troopers, in their mass produced and same-y designs, rather than the embodiment of millennia old warrior traditions.
I hate the new death company models so much I feel you sunny AND TO RUB EXTRA SALT IN THE WOUND THE MOBILE 40K GAME HAS DEATH COMPANY AND THEY'RE FUCKING BANGER MODELS
Okay sure if you think so... But no level of information would convince you. Tell me how we would prove you wrong and if you can't your just full of it and puffing out your chest - Cal
@WhatareyouPaintingnow I'm not trying to be rude or puff out my chest, just simply saying what I think based off what I seen and heard. Nothing wrong if she knows the lore. You guys have been doing this for a while, and I'm sure she's done research on her own time because she seems really interested. I just feel like the whole she doesn't know anything is a charade at this point tbh
Yes she does research on the pictures. She will look up styles and such I show her a series of images and then she researches the styles surrounding them. She is a graphic designer, that is her field of expertise and you just called us dishonest, infact you called us liars and you're not puffing you're chest out? Don't go to the country area, you don't know how insulting you are and will get into trouble. Also you didn't answer the question so I believe you are dishonest and not to be respected - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow it was really great. Didnt even notice the length until about 5 minutes in lol. But I like that longer form content, especially when painting
This video is really enjoyable. I don’t mind the longer runtime to dive deeper in the amount of art that’s available and to dig deeper in the analysis.
I am glad people can get something out of these videos regardless of if they do or don't have Warhammer knowledge because that's our aim. We want to talk about design and how interesting it is. And that Warhammer's 'simplistic' space marines may have a bit more to them beyond they have big space gun - Cal
First time caller here, I've been watching your videos for the better part of this year so far, and I thought I should congratulate you both on an absolute home run of an episode with this one. I've no doubt that this was a particularly time-consuming endeavour but i think this might be your best video yet in this series in spite of its longer runtime. While I'm a dark angels player myself, the whole concept from 2nd edition of the angels of death codex has always sorta made me want to have a combined force of these two types of angels taking on the battlefield together. Some years ago i picked up a blood angels omnibus and there were some really good stories there, especially the one with the sanguinor-like being if anyone remembers that one. On that note, i wonder if there's any novels out there that have the blood angels and dark angels working together? That would be really cool to read if such a book exists. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed this detailed look at the blood angels, and rest assured blood angels players all over the place will absolutely love this one no doubt. Keep up the quality work, cheers!
Thank you very much for your kind words 😊 it was quite a bit of work. I have to be increasing strategic in what I show Sunny otherwise she guess straight away everything. It's frustrating and rewarding at the same time. And yeah you're not wrong it was a lot of work - Cal
16:47 House Kurita from Battletech has a similar colour scheme and considers themselves noble and honourable. However, they have committed significant atrocities, including devastating a planet by decapitating thousands of prisoners and committing other war crimes on a massive scale. Their mechs feature green canopies, which I believe evoke a similar effect to green eyes, symbolizing their envy of House Steiner’s economic success and House Davion’s political stability.
Well I will be a red and black faction that sees themselves as the good guys but do terrible actions... who knows where this connection comes from... bamboozled again - Cal
@@lanasmith4795 it happened in the Night Lords video too I will admit my crime of not reading their omnibus. Yet, Sunny said the hero line because one of the artworks and people lost it over that - Cal
Sunny's joy dissecting this legion was so contagious. I am in agreement thay the primaris update for the beautiful Angels removed so much of their personality. 😢 The editing and work on the episodes feels like is getting better and better. Beautiful work guys!
Thank you very much for your compliments on the editing! I put a lot of effort into this effort I don't know what came over me because as I was writing notes for this legion I felt the need to do some quick redesigns to make it better and stuff hahah ~Sunny
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow I deeply appreciate the redesigns. I think so much work is put into these factions that GW often ignore or forget. There is a beautiful foundation to so much of the world. Respecting whilst dissecting the hard work and artistry of what has gone on with these little plastic guys is deeply appreciated.
Thank you very much it was probably two and a bit weeks of work. Each minute of video we have usually put an hour to two so yeah about 120 hours worth of work at least - Cal
I am going to have to do a lot of research with them because they don't have nearly as much lore in general but also there lore is almost sectioned off - Cal
I think the "lore reason" for the Primaris blood angel models being less fancy is the Devastation of Baal. So many marines died and their armor was destroyed that they could not replace what was lost. The new stuff is a pale imitation of what was lost and the blood of Sanguinious has been thinned in the process. I hate this explanation, but its the one we got.
I started my 40k hobby with the Angels of Death Codex at age 16. I cannot overstate what a perfect fit it was for me: I was vampire goth kid with long blonde hair, trying to become an artist who was struggling with his emotions every day. Now almost 30 years later, now that we finally have up to date models, I am creating my own successor chapter called the Mournful Lords. I want to see whether I can bring my vision into reality. Thanks for going over all of this; it was great food (or blood) for thought!
@@RSBurgener oh man that name, I feel like 'The Lords of Mourning' would sound so badass. I hope you enjoyed the episode and I hope you will check out some of the others. Good luck with your custom chapter - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow thanks, Cal. I am going to "chew upon" that, as the Dramaturge, Shakespire, would say. Either way, I think I'm onto a good concept: Morr from Warhammer Fantasy plus Blood Angels. Crying angel statues and bleeding hearts. I got the best model tombstones in existence from the UK for the bases. I'm ready for this! 😅
Thanks very much it was hard not to ~ Sunny I will blame Sunny for the enthusiasm, she got very excited and then I got more excited, a hype train of two - Cal
Interesting thing about the Sanguinor is that the head you like is actually the most hated part of him in the community. On the old one it is a head and the new is a helmet, the Sanguinor is not just some guy in armour it is a mental projection or a psychic echo or an imperial demon or something so the old head showed gold flesh in gold armour with more real looking wings, the new one shows only a guy in armour with a helmet and mechanical wings similar to Astorath. (The black winged, flesh armoured Chaplain with the Axe at 47:15).
This was a great video, I watch a fair amount of hobby vids and yours are some of the most useful, more recently I think a lot more about colours and selections than simply painting by numbers and this is really helpful...watching this I came to realise just how clever GW actually is, they are deliberate in their approach, I was aware that they match schemes with lore, but the depths that they go to is extraordinary...it is much more complex than simply pushing pieces around a tabletop...
I think it's also the fact that they get to add stuff to it or as some would some say post ad Hoc, they just justified all their stuff by adding all of the Horus Heresy stuff where they put a lot of work into it - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow that is maybe the real genius of GW; you get to add and craft it the way you like...before them, everyone played historicals, mostly Neopolionic and some WW2, but they are fixed in their schemes....then came along Space Marines or rather Rouge Traders and then chapters, and you get to choose how you want to paint them, very clever...it has become so broad, there is something for everyone...keep up the great work
Thanks, but I don't expect anything to be as long as this one this is our longest video ever! But we felt it had to be. We try never to waste people's time. I hope you enjoy your stay - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow I watched to the end. I wouldn't expect it to be given the amount of editing that went into just this one video. I understand why it needed to be this long given the recent disconnect from the models and lore recently. The vast majority of the video hits pretty much every mark.
@@CrimsonKightsOfBaal Thank you very much sir, yeah that is pretty much why it was this length because of their recent redesign. We felt if we didn't go into that it really would have not been complete. It's probably one of our longest redesign sections ever - Cal
Very late to the party but I wanted to comment as I really felt this video was a big leap forward for you. I've really enjoyed your videos due to the really interesting content you guys include and the vast amount of research you obviously do. However, for me it has always felt like both of you were reading off a script. Whereas here it felt like you properly clicked to have a natural spundong conversation based on detailed research, which is a really difficult thing. From experience, i know this is a really hard barrier to crossover so i wanted to point it out to you and congratulate you on it. Keep up the good work!
7:44 I would say that it looks like they are completely covered in blood except the feet. If you look at where the shin guards meet the boots it looks like dark blood
The all black Chaplains are called the Erelim and they serve as the guardians of the tower of the lost on Baal. They never leave the tower, guarding their brothers who have fallen to the rage in direct service to Astorath.
What hits me the most is that they did go and design the winged jump packs for Astorath and the Sanguinor, but then did not use the same design (maybe with smaller wings, Astaroth's wings at least are kind of big) for the Sanguinary guard. The fact the new deathmasks and armors all looks the same is also a bit sad, but the wings are the big part. Agree on the filigree transfer idea, that would do so much for Blood Angels without driving people mad. And the people that really like doing that kind of stuff as freehand still can do it. A generic filigree transfer could even do double duty for 40k and Horus Heresy games, as Blood Angels in both times did decorate their armor to some degree. On top of the wings and heads you showed, there are also a ton of 3d printable shoulder pards that bring in decorative elements to the trim there, GW should just get over themselves and set clear and fair rules of what can and can not be 3d printed for playing in official events or in their stores.
Yeah it's not often I am in total agreement with what a commenter say but yeah pretty dang close if not spot on here. I am glad you can see with the transfer sheet we are thinking of the painters. Great comment 👍 - Cal
Oddly I appreciate the primaris designs because they feel more like 2e and 3e marines. Originally all the divergent chapters weee basically just different colored normal space marines with some special characters and maybe a special unit or two. It wasn’t until later that each of them leaned 110% into being unique and special. (Too far in some cases *cough* space wolves * ) So I like the primaris pulling back a bit on the “everyone is special” feeling the divergent chapters developed. To quote the Incredibles; “when everyone is special, no one is”
@@rutgaurxi7314 lol, I don’t love everything about (the lore, the rules rug pulling, the helmets, etc…) but I do like the “blandification” of the divergent chapters that I feel got way too over the top in their various schticks. Also the larger scale is nice. I also enjoy vanilla ice cream.
@@Dram1984 I think of all of the reactions and reasons behind the like of the primarius this the I can understand the most. However I disagree, but I will explain why because I think you will get it because that syndrome quote was spot on. So, the template isn't a painting template or a colour guide. It is shown in the lore sections of the book. I think that if they were in the painting section not that truly existing any more I think yeah I could understand. However, those old pictures we show at the start of 40k section are the old templates. They aren't super detailed but as you can see with Sunny's reactions she can still get a lot out of them. I think that is how they should be. Have the 100 dollar supplement book for your chapter or whatever with the fancy art like in the 30K books. Everyone's primary complaint is that the primarius are soulless, why give them such an easy win. If it was in the painting section along with a colourless one you can photocopy I would be 200% with you - Cal
I think the bland design of the Primaris Blood Angels is almost deliberate by GW. Gabriel Seth expressed a fear of the bloodline of Sanguinius being replaced by "little Ultramarines." And very few of these Primaris reinforcements have had time to acclimate to their proper chapter, they grew up in Papa Cawl's basement so they don't know Baal's traditions
"you could kitbash these two together to make a better model" Ding ding ding thats exactly what I think GW is doing, just so they can sell more kits to us.
I can agree with you on a lot of that, given the issues of the sanguinary guard feeling a bit more generic. But, the spears and swords were a decent change in my opinion showing further this divine idea of the great angel's preferred weapons. These being the encarmine blade (woo another term of blood) and the spear of telesto. The upgrade kit that is coming along side this redesign could help with the problem but not as much your ideas.
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow For the blood angels in general but can be used on the sanguinary guard to add more decorations. Though does not add more decorated deathmasks or wings sadly. Also sunny, they have the filigree details in the horus heresy decals
Just a video suggestion: How about you taking a look at the classic 2nd edition 'Redhammer' style with it's Goblin Green bases and overall less grimdark vibes? Would love to hear your opinions about it.
The outstanding detail for me, which I hadn't noticed before, were the remarks about Venetian fashion in their schemes and designs - one of the lesser-noticed aspects of the Blood Angels is a naming and cultural tradition pulled from Rennaisance Italy (especially Dante's Inferno, naturally), and to have noticed that before getting any of the actual lore of the legion is an incredible observation!
Minor note about the Death Company art at 55:18 - I actually really like what they've done here, and I've painted it into one of my Death Company marines too - the expression isn't necessarily one of evil, or predation - he just looks very, very tired, but too preoccupied to (ever) be able to rest. In his head, he's still fighting the good fight, he's just lost that ability to differentiate between reality and history.
I think once sunny and cal get up to the 13th legion then this series will truly take iff. Great video, loved the enthusiasm this episode. I miss my little winged primarch ... He was a good boi.
