So this has been my least favorite writing experiment to film (IT WAS HARD, Y'ALL) but it's left me mulling over this idea of productivity at the expense of sustainability. (Oooor is it even productive if it's not sustainable??) Anyways....enjoy! ☀️
0:00 What are "Designated Days"? Also my theories on how this experiment will go.
5:00 Tuesday AKA Freelance Day
9:19 Wednesday AKA AuthorTube Day
13:27 Thursday AKA Fantasy WIP (Meridian Maps 4) Day
19:09 Friday AKA Short Story Day
23:34 Saturday AKA Personal Essay Day
24:53 Wrap-up thoughts and feelings and stats, plus a whole discussion on sustainability vs. productivity!
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
What did you think of this Designated Days experiment?? Do you work somewhat like this? (Or have a specific day you like to bulk film videos, for instance.)
What do you think about productivity at the expense of sustainability? Or do they have to go hand in hand? If something isn't sustainable over the longterm, do you think that productivity is worth it?

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE CONSIDERING A NEW PLANNER!: I just got accepted into the Passion Planner Ambassador program. (I am still too excited even though I've known for, like, two weeks now.) Anyways. I didn't mention it in this video, BUT if you've been eyeing a new planner, you can use the code KATEC10 for 10% off a Passion Planner. (I highly recommend them.) And one of the reasons I love them is because if you can't afford/don't want to buy a new planner, you can download the sheets FOR FREE, Y'ALL. So anyways, code is KATEC10. And the free downloads for all the different daily/monthly/coloring book spreads can be found here: passionplanner.com/collections/free-downloads

This actually made me feel better. I’ve always envied/admired how you can work on multiple projects at the same time and transition between them fluidly throughout the day in small amounts. I’m much more of a “binge” writer. I tend to have long pauses and then a huge burst of productivity on one project. Writing 10k words in a day on one project is comfortably challenging for me. Writing 500 words every day for a month on two different projects sounds utterly impossible - you may as well ask me to sprout wings and fly. I’ve always wished I found it easier to mix-and-match products and have felt like it was a personal failing of mine, etc, because most of the writers that I follow write like you. Seeing that my working style (or close enough) is as difficult and unnatural for you as yours is for me is oddly comforting. And this is weird, but I also can’t eat/drink the way you do. I am a “sit down, consume the whole thing, move to next task” meal person, so when you slowly work through a cappuccino a sip at a time over the course of half an hour, I’m always like “how does she DO that?” Apparently my brain is very binary, like “okay, but choose one: are we drinking This Entire Cappuccino or None At All? No middle ground available.”

I feel your pain! My personal theory is that those of us who "think" with rapidly changing imagery (our minds jump around a lot) cannot be chained to one project for an entire day. We just have to accept that about ourselves. LOL You were a tad more productive but you were often miserable!!! Not a good trade-off. :D Great video!

I like designated days, but I also don’t determine them beforehand. I decide what I’m doing the day of and there are some things I know I can’t do all day because it’s too draining, so I split those days doing multiple projects. If I know I can spend all day on one project, I do like to do that sometimes. Maybe only have certain things as designated days, like since you were more productive with short stories set aside one day a week where you do that, but keep the rest of your days flexible then it might not feel so stressful doing just one thing for just that one day.

I don't know how you work on more than one project at a time! My brain can't work that way, I have to focus on one thing until it's finished. If I do ever try to work on multiple things at once, I'll definitely try this!

This is such an interesting experiment! I've been toying with this idea with my remote classes this semester, as I'm in 5 classes and there are 5 days of the week (plus most of my classes are asynchronous, so I just do them on my own time). But i definitely couldn't cut down editing, filming, and setting to upload all in one day because I just fit it in wherever I can throughout the week. I feel you on the back to back filming being exhausting lol. Great vlog! ALSO: I feel like especially with creative endeavors, it is best to go with the brain flow. Like you can't force a creative process, you have to sort of jiggle it out the best you can, for the most part.

Your writing experiment videos are some of my favorites! I’m the same way, I really prefer working on different projects throughout the day. I actually think it can help you get more done, especially if the projects are very different-if you switch from something analytical to something creative to something physical, no one “part” of your brain gets too fatigued.

I kinda like this concept especially since I have a full time job and do authortube/insta and writing as a hobby right now. Although I understand Kate’s struggle of dancing between projects, I think doing a structure like this where I have to work on a least one project a day will really be motivating. And if I have the time and energy to work on another it’ll be a bonus.

I always love your experiments! I do think that I would have mixed results with some projects going well and others... not so much :D I feel like switching can help with my productivity because I feel inspired and creative again. Def one of your "more complicated" experiments and I feel like my answer would change depending on my projects at the time... so thanks! (and yay to my shoutout ;) )

I like your color system. I‘ve just started editing and I’m using red to mark the bits that I need to use more braincells to switch it from past to present, blue to mark the bits that came from the zero draft, and yellow for the blanks. I hate driving but now when I need to drive I will be out driving for hours because I’m tired of being in the house. I don’t think just one day for authortube is sustainable because that might take longer for videos to come out AND sometimes the brainmumbingness of editing is cathartic.

This is such a great experiment. I tend to work on one project at a time, (usually a month,) but every other creative task is whenever I feel like it. I've been debating doing a 'time-blocking for a week,' experiment, where I focus on a different project every day, to hopefully get used to working on multiple ones at once. I think I would always choose sustainability over productivity. I'd rather do a little every day, than be super productive one day, then crash for three.

I do have designated days which works well for me, but I think the major difference is my work doesn't rely on inspiration! You need inspiration for your drafting process, and the mental motivation to film yourself which you can't just make appear out of no-where. (Which is why I feel like you did well for the personal essay day, it's probably a bit more technical and you are writing for a specific purpose). I have three days that I allocate for studio work, and 2 days allocated for my comic which has already been written and laid out by now. Even though it's art, it doesn't require much creativity at this stage, basically just auto-pilot drawing. Designated days helps me get into the mindset that I need to be as fast as possible in each task!

This was so interesting, especially as someone who can only work on one thing at a time. I wonder if, since your essay and short story days were productive (which makes sense since, as you said, you are actually working on multiple projects on those days), if you would have any luck just designating days for those..or maybe just one of those..each week...and letting the rest of your days be your normal bouncing around.

Love this experiment! I recently switched from switching projects midday to designated days. I couldn't figure out why the switching thing suddenly stopped working for me until I realized it happened around March - I think covid/quarantine just made me want a sense of control over something, and that something ended up being changing my work schedule lol. But switching used to be the sustainable method for me, and now it's designated days. Brains are weird? IDK but I really enjoyed this video haha

Just started the video but I do themed days which is this video. It makes my planning so much better and I know what to work on a specific day. I do include two days in my planning that are self care days. But this is all with a day job. 😂😭 I must also say, these are guided days. If I need to work on editing or recording on a non set day I do them. It's not a hard rule but it's a good home base. My days are writing, business, production (editing and recording), then a dedicated day to reading.

I do designated days (not hours) when I have multiple projects. Sleeping between the projects helps the shift, but I also use an immersive environmental method. I change my writing environment for each project, sometimes it's just music or background noise but if I struggle to transition; I have different drinks, candles, and music playlist for each WIP. I will even change location in the house if I find the my creativity isn't shifting.

I tried to do the designated day thing, but completely failed. Sometimes it happens without realizing. For example, if I'm in the mood to work on my academics all day I do that or if I want to write all day, I can. But I can't do a designated day schedule because there are days where I hop between projects. It honestly depends on my mood and by adjusting to it instead of fighting it, I get more done. Also, it's a lot of pressure to do a week worth of material on 1 day.

So i'm not a writer (yet) but i am and artist who dabbles in a ton of different mediums. I find what works for me isn't so much dedicated days like Monday i do ceramics, Tuesday i do painting ect I like working on one project for long stretches of time so I might plan to do something one day but if I'm not in the mood for it to the point where an hour in i still haven't started i just go to a different project. I'm very much a person that can't force myself to do something when i'm in certain moods. So I have more "dedicated moods" some days i can work on whatever so I work on what can be finished quickly, or get something started that's going to take a while, or maybe just whatever I feel like doing if there are no deadlines. Meanwhile other days i can not do say ceramics to save my life so i'll paint, or draw, or do life stuff. I also tend to finish one project at a time, so i'll figure on doing X project for a week and that'll be my focus. Or i know this oil paint is going to take 3 days to dry so don't plan on working on that, so i'll work on my other stuff during that time. Honestly that makes me sound way more productive than i am, but it works for me :)

Designated days work wonderfully for me, although I'm a bit less restricitve about it. Like, if I feel a really strong urge to do something else on a day, like writing instead of doing RU-vid for example, then I'll do the writing, and push the RU-vid to some other day. Because I can force myself to do something I don't really feel like doing, and while the result isn't amazing, I still get something done, but forcing myself to not do something I'm super excited about just feels counter productive :)

The only time I've done designated days was a summer semester where I had a 3 day weekend with 3 online classes and 2 more classes the rest of the week. I'd do one class a day on my weekend and do the week of work in that day. Overall it was mixed for me, it worked well and I got the work done but I think I overall knew the subject matter less well. However that could have also been due to being an online class rather than bulk learning.

Designated days is almost the only thing that works for me. It helps manage my anxiety in terms of making me feel like I'm doing enough. Usually if I have several different projects to work on, I get so overwhelmed I end up working on none of them and even feel guilty about doing leisure activities like reading so I just....end up on youtube all day. If I designate one day per project then I can give myself a realistic parameter that allows me to focus on one task without freaking out about all the others, because they have their own days. ALSO, how old are the puppos? Zelda seems like such a puppy

I usually film one (maybe two) days a week and then edit the videos over the course of the week (because I'm okay with bulk filming, but the editing is tiring me out a lot faster. Ok idea. What if you have one day of the week that is a "designated day" and you switch out which thing it is each week. So like, every day you'd do your regular blocking but then have one day where you focus on a specific project for the whole day. That way you get to let your brain works in the way it likes, but also have one day a week of mass productivity in a single project. Make sense?

I think for me it depends on the stage the project is at. If I'm trying to get a draft done or make serious progress through something - I feel my brain resources are better focused on the one thing, but it's not how my brain likes to behave, and I think If I'm having to generate new ideas and be creative, taking the restrictions off and allowing it to think about whatever it fancies works better. Brains. Who'd have'm.

I don't think something can really be productive if it's unsustainable. Doing a little bit of work every day over a long time adds up more than doing a lot of work once or twice. Plus, it spaces everything out to avoid burnout and exhaustion. Our brains are designed to support what I like to call "sustainable productivity". That being said, I tend to work mostly on one project until I finish a step. So, right now I'm writing the first draft of a fairy tale retelling. Before I started this, I finished revising a shorter story. And before *that* I finished rereading the most recent draft of my YA Fantasy novel. That isn't to say there is no overlap, and especially if I ever get into freelance work there would definitely be more "working on multiple projects at a time" but it does help to have one thing be more of a primary focus, in my opinion.
@kirathompson3653
@kirathompson3653 3 года назад
I think you could set up a designated day thing where you still do a bit of everything, but a large portion of the day is dedicated to one thing. So if you were on your Fantasy WIP day, you would still be able to work on authortube stiff, but just not as much as Wednesday . . . I don't know if I described that well

I don't really have designated days? I try to write in one main project but I also have all of my note and outline tabs up in case I need to take a break from the main project and do more series stuff or think in broader terms. And now, since I try to write every day, I'm making my Sundays my reading days/work on anything days so I don't burn myself out all at once. I also feel like a kid rebelling against the rules that I myself set most days so, I get it. It's like that meme where its like, "I know the person who makes these rules and she's not gonna do sh*t about it." lol

I prefer to flit too - my time blocks are actually about 30-90 mins, and then I put household stuff in between because thats what helps me replenish brain energy by doing thoughtless washing up in between :P

If anyone ever kidnaps you all they have to do is tie up your hands so you can't move them and you'll be unable to talk! 🤣 I know I've told you about my minimums, and how productive they've been for me. Well, about two weeks ago, I was starting to feel like I was trapped by them. I was still productive, but it had become a chore instead of something to enjoy. A little push is good, but too much will burn me out. So last week, unfortunately, I had two teeth impacted and get badly infected and long story short, I did NOTHING. So now I'm feeling much better and I realized that I was burning myself out, and I realized yesterday that I needed to make sure to enjoy other things in life and balance the work (even work I love) with play and rest. Then I watched the Brandon Sanderson lecture and he talked about life/creation balance and burnout. This morning I watch your video and YOU talk about balance and burnout. I think the universe is shouting at me, what do you think?!?

Bahaha! SO MUCH TALKING WITH MY HANDS. My family and The Boyfriend make fun of me for it ALL the time. Definitely think the universe is shouting out you!! But so much kudos for listening to it (and yourself) and figuring that out! I often wonder if some systems are only MEANT to work for us for limited time periods too?? More mulling over needed bahah. (Also very glad you're feeling better!!)

@@KateCavanaugh Aw thank you thank you! I think feeling so bad helped me to examine how to better take care of myself. I'm going to try , I dunno what to call it, purposeful diversity? Like making one of my goals to purposely do something I don't normally do, so that it balances the steady consistency of work and writing and art. We're gonna learn how to do all this!

I try to have designated days for various work projects but it doesn't work for me, either. I have to be able to switch projects for various reasons even if in theory the designated days would be more efficient. Also if I have a mental block on a project I like to switch projects and that helps.

I used to have designated cleaning day, designated 15k writing day and gaming day but find that does not work anymore.

I've tried designated days and it just didn't work for me. I tried to divide my week and do 3 days freelance work and 3 days working on writing and then take Sundays off and I just didn't like it. Felt like I was doing good on one thing and not the other. I changed it to in the morning I write in my novel for 2 hours. I can usually get 2,000 words that way. The rest of the day is for freelance articles and admin stuff. It seems to be working and I'm feeling more productive.

Ah yes... happy hour... Starbucks baristas everywhere shudder with fear. It's the mobile orders and UberEats orders that are *the worst*. Drive thru is whatever at this point. This writing experiment looks hard... I do not envy this at all. I've been working on maintaining a sustainable writing routine, but work has been so busy that it's been *hard*. (editing my videos is getting quicker though!)

I would wonder if you set half-days if that would work better for you. Say, Monday mornings are freelance and Monday afternoons are short stories. Something like that? I'm a huge gulps at a time writer. (My sprints are generally 45 minutes or 2500 words whichever comes first, so I have different issues.) I don't know. Just spitballing here.

Would you consider having the designated days if you could chose which project to work on. That way you can chose which project to work on based on your mood but also stick to one project at a time. When you switched the personal essays and short stories you were much more productive and those days seemed to go better than the days you'd assigned earlier in the week.

Bahaha yes! I do sometimes! My actual problem is that I sit too much so the standing desk has been an actual lifesaver for my back/shoulders. It took a while to get used to though!

O man yea i tried designated days and I learned REAL quick that I can't fight myself. Society has dumb ass notions around what it means to be efiicient and productive... fun fact(s), I study astology and personality typing, and trying to force myself into a particular (and i would argue, an archetypically male) version of efficiency is both painful and counterproductive for me! (But also general routine is a must. So im learning to balance my life while honoring myself above all else. Cause if i feel tension then i'll ultimately crash and then feel guilty for no reason)..haha long comment rant 💜

I know for a fact that designated days don't work for me. They're just not as engaging as doing a bunch of stuff across different categories. A school day when I only do school work? A bummer. A day when I only write as my productive task? Causes writing hangovers. It's so much easier to have bursts of inspiration for a project than sustaining it all day long.

IMO the idea of designated days is just stupid. Every single time you work on ANYTHING you're going to have to catch up from not working on it for 6 days, just a bad idea. Time blocking is the way to go.

Hi! Some people like the loud keyboard and it's a lot healthier for me to use when I'm at my standing desk. I try to take into account what the viewers experience is, but hopefully you're able to mute for the limited time it's used.
