I love this. People ask me how in the world I'm able to design and fly F1Ds and rockets and so on, and this is the key right here: never, ever give up. You have to be more stubborn than the air you're trying to beat into submission. The rewards are incredible for those who persevere.

Yeah I do this tongue thing since i was a kid, i went to an expert and i was told that I do this thing whenever i am concentrating on something, when you concentrate on something sometimes your brain loses the ability to control (for a short period of time) some of your body parts (in this case the tongue) it is not meant that it loses the complete control it just ignores its movement to concentrate even better. By the way I love what you guys are doing, i was motivated and wanted to get in this hobby so desperately but i was facing difficulties as i was going to the school and now finally it is to an end I HAVE BUILT SIMPLE CUB and EXPLORER all from scratch I LOVE those and they are AWESOME and i am always perfecting them. I am also working on my on OWN plane i have named it THE HAWK. I PROMISE that one day i will become one of you guys. LOVE YOU ALL :)

I had this shop teacher in high school who would stick his tongue out while working. One day he was using the lathe and he was getting saw dust everywhere including all over his tongue. I swear I saw him just put his tongue back in his mouth, again covered in sawdust, swallow really hard, then he stuck his tongue right back out and it got covered again.

Christopher Raff haha, ive actually done the exact same thing (had someone tell me afterward). When you have a passion for something, you get in “the zone”, and NOTHING can break your concentration. Doesn’t even matter if your end product is terrible(it helps if it isn’t, though). For creators, the act of creating is what we love.

Hey Jeremy here is a tip for you... on biplanes that have stagger to them you need to work out your CG using the mean aeronautical chord of both wings, not the cord of just one wing. On a biplane you go from the leading edge of the forward wing to the trailing edge of the aft wing to work out your CG. You CG would be at about 25 to 30% of your mean aeronautical chord. I learned this from a friend that is an aircraft designer when I was working up a scale up of Hobie Sorrell's SNS-2 Guppy as a two seat aircraft.

If you got it on the second try, that’s pretty dang good. Nothing to feel bad about there. I’ve had projects that I poured my heart into that weren’t flyable after 5+ attempts, and others I eventually gave up on altogether, and they were less complex than yours. But yeah, often the best thing to do is leave it overnight and come back refreshed. Good looking plane.

Hi Jeremy - I'd suggest lengthening the nose by about 5 cm - you will note that the R3C2 has a long Curtiss D-12, and this will make a big difference for the model - the empennage will have more clean airflow, and the extra nose side area will again help offset the floats. Good design overall, looks great !

Hi Jeremy, never give up! I have been prototyping lately myself. Just a couple days away from completing v0.2 prototype of my 1515mm 60 size acro / 3d printed plane. I have made many prototypes for single parts, but this is the second fully assembled plane. The first fully assembled prototype was heavy and tailheavy, but this time I have lost 1.5kg of airplane :) Hopefully I'll have something to share to the rc community by late fall.

I can relate jeremy, I’ve been working on basically the same design for the duration of my hobby career, constantly changing and improving tho not yet having the desired combo of features. But I’ll never give in! I enjoy the act of designing a lot and learned early on nothing ventured, nothing tried, nothing gain!

Wow! It took you guys one day to diagnose and fix the problem. I was on a Engineering team at Embry Riddle trying to build RC planes for a competition, we had the exact same issue and it took us multiple weeks, about 3 iterations of airplanes, and AS3x to get it to acceptable flight handling...

Your experimenting paid off! The initial smaller tail reminded me of Lindbergh's Ryan NYP which I believe had an intentional smaller tail to keep him on his toes and not in dreamland on his Atlantic crossing. Aside from that, we know some float equipped planes have additional surfaces added to the tail to help flight character..ie the Cessna 190-195.

Wow! Thanks so much for making this video. I’m on my first build and it’s crashed maybe 4 times now and I’ve been kind of losing motivation to keep repairing it (it’s balsa, not foam so it takes ages) but this has inspired me to keep on going so maybe it’ll be 5th time lucky!?

Round the front half of the floats now and that thing will fly awesome...meaning round the sides up on the front half...it will reduce effective side plate area on the front half. That thing is COOL

Great video. Thanks for showing the process, including the failures and lessons learned. As I tell my students in Aviation Club, and as I told my son when he was struggling alongside me as we both embarked on this hobby, you learn more from your failures than from your successes and it's all about perseverance, patience and fortitude! P.S., I still think that this Curtis could use a few ounces of weight on the tips of the floats to get the CG right ;)

lengthen/extend the rear end of the fuselage by about 2 inches, that should give it a lot more stability.

Stability isn't just about centre of gravity. Its about the relation of center of gravity with the centre of all the aerodynamic forces. More surface area aft moves that centre of pressure back so in effect the centre of gravity is now more forward in relation to it despite not physically changing position. The floats are destabilising because they move the centre of pressure of the whole model forward and the couple with the centre of gravity is weakened.

Calum MacFarlane Do the floats act as air foils? In other words, like an upside dow mounted long but skinny wing surface? If so, that might be pulling the nose down. Or would the down force be back a bit due to the location of the mounting?

Sage TX Sort of, they will likely have a centre of pressure both in yaw and pitch around the same point which is forward of the centre of gravity so that any disturbance where the angle of attack or yaw increases will result in a divergent force rather than a restoring force like happens with a tail surface.

Sage TX no problem. I'm probably didn't explain well but think of a dart. If you make the flights bigger it flies more stable. If you moved them to the front it would tumble.

Calum MacFarlane I'm not an aeronautical engineer, but do fly a lot of my RC planes on floats. Experience has shown me that adding floats definitely changes the plane. Balance it at the same point after adding floats and it will fly like a very tail heavy plane. My Cub gets a heavy brass spinner but when the floats go on and it flies much better. I built a Great Planes Cub with a 90 inch wing span. It the build instructions it tells you to balance it with the nose down if you add floats. Just a guess but the up slope at the front of the floats must generate lift causing it to fly like it's nose heavy.

ADD ABOUT 2-2 1/2 INCHES TO THE REAR FUSELAGE LENGTH OR PUT AUX VERTICAL STABILIZERS ON THE STAB. THE FORWARD PART OF THE FLOATS ADDS SIDE AREA AHEAD OF THE CENTER OF ROTATION and is de-stabilizing. Shift battery to keep C G nearly where it is. Gary

I wonder if the floats are messing with the center of pressure. Maybe too close to center of gravity. Bigger surfaces on tail moved it further aft (which obviously helped).

I did thrust vectoring on my nutball. But the diehedral caused the craft to flip because the airflow created an aileron. So now I'm back to the drawing board.

I think the term Jeremy is sort of circling in the first part of the vid is "Kitbashing". Also, as Andres notes and given that it actually flew very nicely without the floats, adding them added a lot of "fuse" top/bottom and side area in front of the CG, counteracting the directional stability the fin and stabilizer were supposed to create. Reduce the size of the floats, and I think you will be one step closer to a winner. To be honest, they look way too big compared to the original anyway. And do keep the larger tail, at least until you've tried with the smaller floats.
