Mike Mangini is famous for being an incredibly talented drummer and teacher, but also for creating some of the most elaborate and breathtaking drum sets of all time. He breaks down his first kit, which he used with Extreme, consisting of RotoToms in an 'Apex Shape.' Then, we jump to his 2010s Dream Theater kit, which was a modern marvel of drum set engineering. After that, we discuss his current kit, used for his great new album, 'Invisible Signals,' and learn about the WHY and HOW he creates the design and shape of these kits.
Mike also shares how his passion for science, math and the human brain influences his choices when it comes to building his kits and performing.
Mike will be doing a Masterclass tour across the USA in February and March 2024 - check out his site to learn more about that and all things Mangini!

He didn't do anything wrong, it's similar to the Red Hot Chili Peppers kicking Josh Klinghoffer out when Frusciante wanted back in. Mangini was the best fit for when Portnoy wasn't an option....but Portnoy IS Dream Theater

Excellent interview Bart. I was fortunate to be Mike’s drum tech for a handful of drum clinics in early 2000’s. Great all round guy, hilariously funny,….but sharp, laser focused when he sat behind the kit.

I see people online complain about others drummers having bigger kits, as if it's not necessary. It kind of bothers me, both the audacity of telling someone else what they should or shouldn't do, plus the lack of imagination in thinking outside of the box as far as kit design. I have a huge kit and like to set it up in different configurations to test my ability and creativity.

I agree with that, I think everyone should only care about what set that have and be positive about other folks drums. I used to have a 12 piece Ludwig setup and I loved moving it around and experimenting. That is half the fun!

Using this great platform just to kindly ask, What happened to DRUMHEAD magazine? Mangini was on the cover of the Superdtummers issue and now myself and all the subscribers or those who have bought issues are not able to access this greet source of information. I know they stopped making the magazine but still I am very much onto old Modern Drummer issues which I absolutely LOVE. So we need all of the issues back. I have contacted the digital platform and they answered it is down because it is not paid for the app maintenance or something in that sense. If we are to make donations, buy the magazine or whatever let Mover say so and we will help. But this is really not correct. Thank you Bart for doing a really sophisticated content in the years of insta drumming❤

Hey man, that is a very good question and it seems like a common theme with magazines these days. I wish I had an answer on DRUMHEAD specifically - I did an episode on drum magazines with Earl Bennett and he may have mentioned something about it but that episode was from last year so things may have changed. I’d check that out and maybe find his channel and see if he has any updates. I wish I could be more helpful - thank you for the kind words!

Mr. Mangini, I watched you in the video “A Drummers Dream” and on one drum kit you are playing on. By the high hit pedal you also had about 6 pedals in total. I’ve asked others and they either never noticed or don’t know. So Mr. Mike Mangini, I am not sure if you will answer the question for all the pedals? Thanks for the info, really enjoyed that video.

I wish you could have asked him why his kits got smaller and smaller. The last tour he had a single KD, two rack toms, 3 floor toms and if I remember correctly just 2 or 3 Octabans on a stand near the hi hats. Not a big kit at all. Was it more about cost or something else?

@@danlc95 why would they do that? Will they ask Portnoy to play a small kit? I don’t think so. Wtf, I play what I want and need, if the band doesn’t like it, they can step off. Thanks for the info!!

@@HoustonRoad It was John Petrucci's request specifically. I kinda wonder if it had something to do with touring and recording because having a smaller kit means less work overall but idk. John hasn't had the best track-record with Mike Mangini's drum production, so maybe it was another weird decision in a sea of weird decisions.

This will be considered a knock against Portnoy - because we're all thinking it - but Mangini is hands down a better technical drummer then Portnoy. I have to say, I have lost more respect of Portnoy and DT as a whole a long time ago; Portnoy can't solo to save his life (meaning they have no depth or real veracity), though his sense of time and some riffs are really good. But Mangini is a real drummer, who lives and breathes it and can play anything. I think Portnoy will be afraid to play most of what Mangini put down with DT, simply because he does not have the facility for it. It is a shame how he got booted out the group for an obvious nostalgia bump by DT. Guess old dogs need bones too.
