Designing A New Dory Rowing Boat With A Scale Model.

Designing a new plywood dory, based on a successful family-built boat.. I'm using cardboard, cut with a laser, but of course a sharp knife would do the job too. Even if you don't plan to make a fullsize boat, I'd recommend making a model because they are so easy and you'd learn a whole lot about boats.

I come from an old sailing town in the states where we still use dorys for sailboat races if you pause the video at 3:05 you can actually see a photo of them racing in our harbor. It's so cool to hear you talk about the process or making one!

That's really interesting how you can change the boat profile so easily. Wonder if you could add something like a dagger board to stop the boat moving sideways on the water.

@@WayOutWestx2 you know it. You will be ok. On this end of the province there were two main types named after the towns they were made in . One is the lunenburg dory and the other was the Shelburne dory. With lots of fights about which one was better. Truth is they were both built for different reasons. As you see you can build them with a great deal of varence. From small rowers to sailing rigs. Cheers two thumbs up from this side of the pond.

Hey Tim! I'm loving the videos. Great idea using the laser to make fast models. I like using my 3d printer to rapid prototype but your laser is perfect for the boats because it is just like how you really build it.

Hi, I'm not a mathematician, nor ship builder, but whenever I build something I try to use the Golden Geometry. You know just 14:1,618=8,65 and You get some beautiful shape. This is good for rectangular shape, I'm not quite sure how to use it for a boat. Good luck :-)

Dear Way out west blog inventor 👍👏👌 Often times simple is simply the best! I really hope that Way out west blog shipyard will be able to sell boat building stencils or even complete kits or boats after the successful launching of the new model. I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the boat building series. I really like to see if 2 feet less in length will make such a big difference? As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you (humans animals and plants).

Very interesting. She looks similar to galician dornas, although it is said that dornas derived from medieval scandinavian shallow water ships.
@WayOutWestx2
@WayOutWestx2 3 года назад
thanks, Krai. I looked them up - similar, but dories have flatter bottoms
@johngoodell2775
@johngoodell2775 3 года назад
THey were developed along the New England and Canadian maritime communities (not just Canada). The grand banks style you have is just one type used from scooners. Dories rowed from shore often had more rocker and more curve around the bilge. like the Swampscott style. I would recommend at least putting a bit of rocker in the bottom. It will make the boat much more nimble and easier to maneuver with one oarsman and more able to slide over incoming waves

Hi Tim, why don't you use the original dory plans or take the dimensions off the old one you use and build it a little lighter using epoxy, the old one looks really stable and proper seaworthy, it may be better to not try and reinvent the dory, though it is fun to experiment, I really like your old dory, is it in the dory book or where did you get plans? Best wishes from the Azores and BTW Thank you for the Rose hive book

We couldn't find the original plans, Nathan. I was thinking it might get too narrow if we just shrink it proportionally. Still notsure what to do for the next one, but it's good to be able to compare models.
