Designing a Stained Glass Window with Hyland Studio 

We wanted to bring light into a stairwell without going through the drama of sinking a light well from roof to ceiling. We also desired a light source that was more visually interesting and that would add not just brightness, but color: stained glass! The 3.5' oculus window was a birthday gift that enabled Robert to exercise his God-given creative talents by doing whatever his fancy dictated. Moved by the idea of light and divine creation, Robert worked with Maggie, a talented and intuitive stained glass artist at Hyland Studio. Maggie turned his pastel illustration and pencil drawing, inspired by Genesis 1:3-4, into a blueprint for a magnificent stained glass window. We collaborated on choosing the glass, but Maggie made it easy by providing gorgeous possibilities with different textures, luminosity, and depth. This video is the first part of a three-part series that documents our journey creating and installing a window unto the soul of the house. Stained glass is a millennium-long, almost unchanged tradition that has helped us to comprehend the sublime heights to which art and inspiration can ascend.
