I consider my style in the vein of European Farmhouse, English Country, cottagecore, etc as well. After giving it extensive thought, I realized its appeal is due to the fact that, as a child, I read and watched a lot of historical books and movies that were set in the English countryside. These stories were some of main forms of escape and pleasure growing up, and it’s clear that its impact still lingers within me as an adult via interior design!

That’s such a great point! I think you’re on to something. You just made me realize I’m like trying to live in a Keira Knightley movie mixed with a Beatrix Potter book 😂 It’s so interesting how what we love as children really forms us into adults. But I think you’ve definitely confirmed that this is a very authentic style for you because there’s a lot of person meaning tied to it!

English Country is my favorite.

One thing that I think also has a huge impact is the building itself and how it works with certain interior designs. There’s some homes that can be flexible but there’s others that have a certain style that really gets to be fun to research and see if it’s possible to bring the house back to its hay day. For an example, I moved into a family owned cottage on the family farm, but it badly needed a good renovation as it was too contemporary. While this was happening, cottagecore took root, and I really liked the concept of timeless and classical looks that a renovation wasn’t needed every 10 years. The goal was to come up with not only something that was appealing to me, but was authentic to the build’s style, and to give it good character. The nice thing is if I want to change things, I have it designed that I can mix things around if I want. But I think my primary style would be farm/cottage Americana, maybe some English country. It just seems to be sensible, plus my family has been avid antique collectors for generations. Also, try using those beads as decorations to wrap around your Christmas tree!

When I was younger, I was all about the trends and getting away from the "old fashioned" looks of my parents and grandparents. Now that I'm older I've learned to appreciate the classic and timeless styles that I once thought of as "outdated". I don't even like the word outdated because so many of the styles that are trending now are a blast from the past (i.e. mid-century modern). Trends come and go. I'm about decorating my home so that when I walk in the door I smile. Great videos! Blessings, Arlene

You are a very well spoken young lady and I totally agree with what you’re saying about trends and styles changing frequently. I buy or thrift what I like whether or not it is considered the style at the time. I can’t say that my style is any particular type but I am happy with it. Thank you for expressing perfectly what others need to understand before they go overboard with a style or trend they may hate tomorrow.

I’ve been making lists of my favorite decor elements for 50 years. Of course, I started with magazines, and made a list of the individual items that made the room seem special to me. Now it’s social media, but when going through my old lists recently, I see that my taste has not changed. From color schemes to accessories, my taste has stayed fairly consistent all this time. I’ve been gradually working toward that ideal all these years and I love my current home!

@nomadine85
@nomadine85 Месяц назад
I’m very much in the anti trend side of this so for me the approach is actually sort of from the other direction. That is, I’m still being influenced by trends, but in the opposite way. Like for example Bouclé fabric, I think it’s so pretty (genuinely) but the fact that it was suddenly popular and is so strongly associated with having been “trendy” kind of made me like it less. I have caught myself being drawn to it instinctively but then thinking “no it’s so trendy, thooo”. So to me, really really trendy things that I genuinely have enjoyed can sometimes ruin something I genuinely like. Not often but you know. A little bit sometimes
@beccaamigo
@beccaamigo Месяц назад
@@nomadine85 I feel you on this! When people started doing “grandmillennial” style decor I got a bit peeved because I’ve always drawn inspiration from my grandma’s house and my style leans a bit older in that way. So seeing it become a trend was kind of annoying 😂

I enjoy your videos because of your smart and multidisciplinary reasoning. Cognitive distortions play a significant role in what we perceive as "liking," a topic that fascinates me. It really does make sense to distinguish between liking an overall concept and liking specific elements. I was surprised when I couldn’t choose a single piece of art from my collection of hundreds to hang on my wall. The same with answering question "is there a picture on my board that I'd 100% replicate in my living room"? I still haven't found one. Personal space adds a different layer of complexity. When redecorating and upgrading, cognitive distortions weren’t a big issue for me, as I was aware of them. However, when designing my first apartment from scratch, I faced many challenges. Too much or too little exposure to trends can skew your perception. I’ve realized that it takes 3-4 years of active exposure to truly understand trends and develop taste, even as an artist with decades of experience. Designing my home over 1-2 years wasn’t enough-I was misled by fleeting trends. There’s definitely a "dream aesthetic" within each of us, waiting to be discovered and translated into a space that feels right. But when exposed to just one or two trends, which change every 1-4 years, you’re likely to lean into them and later grow tired of them as you realize what initially drew you in. Decision fatigue can also lead to buying items you think will match but don’t truly resonate with your taste, just go with the exposure bias. For example, I knew I wanted a dark interior, specifically dark green. I’ve loved dark academia since my teenage years, when it wasn't even a thing. In early 2019, when the green trend was just emerging, it was mostly art deco/jungle style, with lots of gold and velvet-neither of which appealed to me, except for the art deco lamps. Because of so little examples, I made some mistakes, like experimenting with greenery wallpapers, and I’m glad I didn’t go all-in with it in my living room. I do have one in my office, which impresses visitors but still feels like a mistake to me. I just didn't have any other ideas to convey the 'feeling'. I was also drawn to the simplicity of black metal elements in the loft style, which was at its peak then. I incorporated a lot of it in my home, but now I think I needed something different. I still use black metal and wood but in softer forms. What I didn't realize at that time, I am just a sucker for classic interiors. But without comparison, I couldn't say that out loud. At that time, "classical interiors" were mostly modern classic or completely baroque and it didn't describe my taste at all. From truly classical examples at the time, I'd go for... gothic. Seriously, I looked up inspirations from horror movies frames, it's still on my pinterest lol. In hindsight, while I did well with my apartment, I would incorporate more texture today-especially stone and wood-to balance out the varnished flat surfaces of my furniture. This realization came to me after browsing thousands of inspirations, including completely different from my personal style, like Japandi (cottage core is too chaotic for me). Also the stones available 5 years ago were not the same, marble was really popular, and it's totally not my vibe. Creating a trendy interior that lasts requires a lot of skill. But ultimately, good design will always stand the test of time, whether it corresponds with current trends or not. It took me 5 years to understand what will last. It is art to make something sophisticated, striking, but not too elegant as this would not be cozy. Not childish, not plastic, not chaotic, not naive or kitch. (nothing wrong with these, of course, if someone prefers having fun over peace).

Great advice in this video! I'm a professional illustrator, so for me, I'm very hyper aware of the things that I love and the colors that I love because I incorporate them into my work, but even I get caught up and have to check myself about trends and make sure I actually REALLY like something and not just because it's on my feed a lot. And I'm even typically in the "I hate trends" camp. My husband and I have a dream of having a farm one day also. I love antiques. Love the 1800s. I love a "working" country kitchen, rather than having a bunch of pictures of roosters everywhere. I'm also somewhat of a tomboy and completely agree with you about the frilly fabrics! It really is helpful to look at moodboard images and just take a second to break down WHY you really like something. Because really, if you just end up emulating trends or a specific labeled "look" for your house... then it's not YOUR house. You're just copying someone else's idea of what a house should look like, and eventually it won't feel like you anymore. - I would say the only time I really will buy something that's currently trendy is if it's something that I've always loved and it just happens to be a trend now. Because then it's easier to find in the stores, but even then it's circumstantial! P.S. OH NOOO NOT THE BEADSSS lol - If you celebrate Christmas and get a tree, maybe use it as a garland! (or just a generic winter garland)
@jekalambert9412
@jekalambert9412 Месяц назад
If you break out of the "style/trend box" your decor will be timeless. I shop 2nd hand for EVERYTHING! The advantage is that the "newest" trend items (like those oversize beads) usually don't end up in thrift shops. The disadvantage of 2nd hand shopping is that it's too easy to buy a bunch of random stuff that isn't cohesive. This video gives you some great ideas about how to identify your style and therefore be able to choose what authentically appeals to you. I carry 3x5 index cards painted with my wall colors and a packet of fabric samples in a zip lock bag in my purse to help me stay on track. I also carry a retractable plastic tape measure along with a list of what I'm looking for in my phone. My list includes approximate dimensions so I don't mistakenly buy something that won't fit the intended space.

Use the whitewash beads wrapped around a garland at Christmas. Add a light string. I have one I do for my dining room table at the holidays that turns out stunning. Or maybe even as a garland on a Charlie Brown tree in a bath or spare room?

Furniture manufacturers, appliance manufacturers, paint companies, all these were doing this long before social media. Back then new things came out at a slower pace but every decade home goods and colors changed. Today it is sped up to a ridiculous pace by social media. I tell people to do what you love and be satisfied with what you have. Contentment is not having what you want, but rather wanting what you have. It is fun to get new things once in a while, but dont go overboard.

My opinion, timeless products are gold mirrors on console tables with vases and a lamp and picture frames. Gold is big right now and timeless, and elegant. I like the elegant look, not much the farmhouse, cottage look. Faux trees in an earthy coloured pot, timeless. I love Mediterranean pots, timeless. Greige colour is big. Just love gold framed landscape pictures. Basically a comfy, character filled, beautiful decor home.

Terrific video! The mindful scrolling is a hot tip! I do agree that having my basic palette very neutral… serves two good purposes… 1. My house looks “ clean” and tidy and less busy 2. I can always change accessories: pillows, wall art, rugs, placemats, soap dispensers, etc. I can go wild with colors with those items if I like.

Very well said here! I think that we can easily want to switch up spaces when they start to feel a bit outdated, but as others have mentioned, trends come and go so it's better to be a bit patient or slowly switch out a few things. And now the modern styles become outdated sooo quickly. Remember a few years ago when it was all about the 'industrial look'? Now you barely see that anymore.

I am anti-trend for sure. It really dates a home. I love traditional items that have stood the test of time. I also believe there is way too much stuff already in the world, if we would just value things a little more, instead of throwing things away to find something new and exciting. The new and cheap stuff isn't going to make anyone happy. Wish everyone would just treasure heirlooms that people spent their lives to get when they exchanged their time for the money to buy the stuff. People in America really focus too much on trends and perfection. Just because something has wear and damage doesn't mean we just get rid of it. Curated is the way to go and when I see most designers homes that is what I see. Lol, the beads, they would be cute on a Christmas tree or on a garland swag, you could also paint them in gold for a tree.

Farmhouse is based off traditional style, pared down for a country lifestyle or casual vibe which fits a DIY, woodsy, or down to earth person. It can be dressed up or down. That’s why it’s been such a persistent trend since the Arts and Crafts movement in 1895! And probably before. People return to comfort over and over. Homey style never left in cottages -except for the ornate Eastlake influences which are cool again- and has been revived several times (Primitives in 1980, and the “ prettier” version which came in with Gunne Sax, Laura Ashley and translated to decor in the shabby chic trend in the 80s-90s to now (Hobby Lobby, anyone?)

Such a good video! I hear you on the beads (which are so useless and dumb, IMO). Did anyone truly like those beads anyway?

Thanks! And yea I don’t think so, they’re a pretty good example of a nonsense decor piece that didn’t deserve the hype 😂

Hi 😊 The green is Vintage Vogue by BM and I’m not sure about the off white- just the basic apartment complex color.

Just give the beads to a thrift store. Some who crafts will buy them.

What would your tips be for someone who is about to build a house but conflicted on what style to go with? I love natural materials like wood and stone but also moody style as well so I’m not sure what to do in like a kitchen for instance 😅❤
@beccaamigo
@beccaamigo Месяц назад
@@camilleallen8207 I would definitely follow your love for natural materials. I really don’t think you can go wrong with wood, marble, stone etc. They are versatile and timeless materials and you can lean into moodiness with paint color and smaller pieces that are easily reversible in case you find yourself changing your mind. For your kitchen, I like the idea of choosing wood cabinets with a neutral undertone because it makes for a really flexible base that can move with you as you get closer to finding your authentic style. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Ideas are great, but if a social media account just makes you feel discontent, maybe it's time to turn your attention elsewhere.

As a tech bro, i can't help but see the irony in the algorithm serving up "feed" as if we're poultry. On a related note...you wanted a farm?! How do you reconcile the vast difference between wanting to do some farm-work but also wanting a super ornate almost gothic home?!?! 😂 PS: IMO you don't not like matcha. You've just been drinking the wrong matcha. I switched from pour overs to matcha and my life is significantly better. Matcha has "L-theanine" which is calming. So you get the buzz of coffee without the crash or jitters. Try ceremonial ippodo matcha

Tech bro? This is shocking because all this time I thought I was going back and forth with Brunchwithbabs 2.0. And that “feed” visual is really disturbing 😂 I did and do want a farm lol. I think I can do both because the farm animals actually live outside. I’ll check it out. You haven’t steered me wrong yet. Although considering the fact that I spent a week putting together my coffee nook, I might be in too deep to quit.
