I'm not really in the market for a Polish setting RPG, but the book looks great. Congratulations. I hope it continues to sell well.

Man, that's what I was thinking as well, but I got it anyway, and I'm glad I did! The monsters and magic alone are well worth the purchase, plus you get items and tons of useful tables that you can use in other settings.
@AndyReichert0
@AndyReichert0 Месяц назад
it's not about the setting. i'll likely use a less lore-heavy setting. but it's worth buying just to have a system and content designed to be played, based on decades of actually playing, and having classes that are believable, like "awakened" npcs, rather than forced and generic tropes.

Hey Pundit, I got Baptism of Fire yesterday. I held off because I didn't have much interest in 11th century Poland as a setting, but damn, you certainly kindled that interest. I feel I could easily do an exciting monster-of-the-week campaign using your bestiary, and I love all the random tables.

That is hugely wonderful feedback to hear. If you bought it off DTRPG, then please do me the favor, in a day or two (I think you have a to wait a little after purchase) to write that as a brief review on the product page.

I don't place a ton of value on historical authenticity (I like pulp, personally), but when I saw the level advancement tables in L&D I knew I wanted to use them in whatever kind of game I run. Giving the players the choice between a customized build and more power overall is a great tradeoff.

This looks truly awesome. Very well done, for us mere mortals. And for Meatball, I've no doubt that she is dispassionately and passively pleased with your work and will even condescend to sit on it once in a little while! Is there a pronunciation guide in the back somewhere? That could be very helpful for players. That, or a pronunciation given in parentheses at the first instance of a peculiar word.

@RPGPundit
@RPGPundit Месяц назад
That's fine though. Most players will choose that, because it is the best overall benefit. The only reason to choose, and thus sacrifice one option, is if there's something you feel you desperately need.

Congratulations on the sales success! Most ancient sailors didn't know how to swim. It reduced the number of sailors going AWOL by jumping overboard when they were near a port. Does the Holy Warrior get those bonuses against multi-level marketers (ex, Amway people) and telemarketers? >;)

I'm from the thaco era and I much prefer ascending AC. It's much more intuitive and all around makes sense when trying to keep a theme or feel in your ruleset.
@joelkurowski7129
@joelkurowski7129 Месяц назад
I never really liked thac0. I even tried switching to a different version published in Dragon. the system is so unintuitive that I would forget in the middle of combat how it was supposed to be calculated. Some people can grok it, and some people just can't. I'm one of the second category. Ascending AC is just best.
@Shamustodd1
@Shamustodd1 Месяц назад
@@joelkurowski7129 My cousin who was one of my gaming buddies was also a DM came up with basically what we call ascending AC back in late 80's. I was actually resistant at first but the ease of use won me over because it just made sense, flowed well and felt right.
@diegoborges3716
@diegoborges3716 Месяц назад
I'm totally indiferent to that. Growing playing 2e AD&D, Thac0 never was an issue for me. Yeah, ascending AC is more practical. But Thac0 may be also instinctive.
@MogofWar
@MogofWar Месяц назад
I don't have a problem with THAC0 but I like how 3rd Edition implemented ascending AC in a manner that mathematically identical... Incidentally, I worked out a descending armor class algorithm that would work off attack bonuses instead of THAC0.(Fix target number to 21 and add AC as a bonus to the roll.) But the purpose of that algorithm is less for actually playing a game and more for converting a statblock on a very short notice.
@RPGPundit
@RPGPundit Месяц назад
The only thing I was saying is that strangely some people think ALL OSR games use ThAC0 or descending AC. For those who like those mechanics, that's fine. It's just not considered a standard of the OSR.

What do you think the thought process of the creation of the D&D 3e and 3.5e era classes were? And what do you think the thought processes of the creation of the fifth edition era classes were?
@RPGPundit
@RPGPundit Месяц назад
3e was, as I said, designed for a kind of "balance" which diminished niche protection. Not that it did the job very well, because some classes were much better than others, especially as they scaled with level. They were also designed with system-mastery in mind, where the more obsessively a player read the rules, the more able he was to make a vastly overpowered character (with things like feat selections, etc). I don't have to think much about the 5e classes because I was there. They were designed to be a mild kind of niche protection, though it seemed like a big deal compared to 4e (where essentially every class did everything), and to be easily playable by casual players who didn't know all the rules.
@tabletopgamingwithwolfphototec
@tabletopgamingwithwolfphototec Месяц назад
3:35 The whole Thaco issue & miss understanding about the OSR is a good reason why to do a book and/or video about the history of the osr & explain the eras/gens/waves/types of osr games.

A bit of a odd question here. I am returning to the hobby after a long break and and looking at the various systems and still figuring what one to chose that would best fit the setting I am making, what kind of setting, a medieval one, but populated by anthropomorphic races. Much like the Historia campaign setting, in fact, very much that and Redwall. But, I hate 5th. And now the question, would I be able to mix both Baptism of Fire and the L&D classes and rules mix well being brought to 1 setting? I love the class design.
@RPGPundit
@RPGPundit Месяц назад
Yes. L&D and Baptism of Fire have the same core system. Some classes (like fighter, or thief) are literally identical in both games. There's some stuff in L&D that isn't Baptism of Fire (like alchemy, and slightly more advanced armor, firearms) and more stuff in Baptism of Fire that isn't in L&D, including new magic, magic items, more background tables, more criticals, etc, and also a whole different set of random tables. But they're essentially the same game and you can move stuff from one game to the other without any change.

Do you feel classes are superior to classless systems?
@RPGPundit
@RPGPundit Месяц назад
It can depend on the genre; but the more a game setting/genre is based on archetypal concepts the more important class-based systems are. Also, most systems that don't have classes end up creating mushy characters that aren't really anything except based on system mastery. That is if you define "classless" as "you pick and choose which abilities you have". In many ways, even in a setting/genre not based on different heroic archetypes, its probably better to have a "single class system" rather than a classless one. So for example, my Invisible College game essentially has one class: agent of the Invisible College.

I didn't say that exactly. I said that she got almost all of the rules that differ from standard D&D from OSR sources. And I pointed out that almost all of those kinds of mechanics in Shadowdark (except for that weird rule about torches) all appear in Lion & Dragon. That doesn't necessarily mean that she got it directly from me. Though the random-benefits by level thing is not very common in OSR at all...
