hello! I must apologize for not responding earlier. I saw your comment and wanted to respond appropriately. I love what you say about gardens as art. I wholeheartedly agree. I think of all art as "food for the soul". I sense a growing movement away from such appreciation in gardens. It seems now gardens must be about food, native plants, bees, etc. Those are all wonderful outcomes, but my goal in gardening has always been about providing food and habitat for wildlife AND to provide beauty...things that make people smile and feel something. Although I try to incorporate native plants, I am not beholding to the concept. What about the beauty of Calla lilies, or Roses? One of the reasons I left our local master gardener program was that it promoted everything about gardening, except creating gardens as art, or food for the soul. I felt like an island. So....your comment struck me in a certain way, and I really appreciated it. Thank you!

Absolutely beautiful process and outcome with this garden. I particularly appreciate the thoughtful way it was created and adapted and changed as skills and knowledge improved and as you co-created with nature. Even though this is a garden has 15+ years of development, others whose gardens are at a much earlier stage can benefit much from this very thoughtful video and beautiful garden.

It’s truly exciting to see urban yard-sized landscaping videos. I feel like a tend to see a lot of “small sized gardening makeovers” that are not at all what I would think of as “small.” I’m currently in the process of making over my south facing narrow side yard that looks just like yours (currently mine is much more like the before than after). I want an enveloping, secret garden feel without encroaching on the neighbors too much, so I appreciate this video.

Truly inspiring and informative. I just love how you worked with the nature, not against it. Sadly, many gardeners fail to consider ‘right plant at the right place’ concept before they create their dream gardens, and they wonder why some certain plants do not survive or thrive in the garden.

Thinking about my garden and preparing for changes .., found your vid on the side yard garden…your discussion was very welll done …. Complete with explanations, plant identification and observations over time. So appreciated the slower pace of your narrative and the time allowed to focus on individual plants. I too live and garden in Zone 4 in Upstate NY … so I also appreciate your garden thru the seasons. As a hosta enthusiast - I enjoy their use in the garden. My bonsai collection is incorporated where appropriate to add interest to the garden. Thank you for sharing your garden particularly on this cold day in January :)

Wonderful, thorough presentation of your design progress through the years! I’m sure this took some time to put together as well as produce. Six years ago We built our house on a two acre lot with half of it in a wetland! But we have a whole challenge of a wildlife area which is a bit different. Even though you are in almost an opposite garden zone 4 and I am 8 (many of your plants are foreign to me!) I enjoyed something different and peaceful! Your attention to detail and garden enthusiasm comes through and is appreciated. I admire the courage you have to do a channel and share and wish I had the same! I’m not sure but I believe a lot of us gardeners are introverts.

Im not good at designing a yard. We live in the country and have a lot of wild life mainly dear, sometimes moose and bears. Then birds and skunks. Plus blue clay that either is limited or limited to o bring in top soil and mulch.

I am so thankful for your videos! I am located in the western suburbs of Minneapolis and it is SO GREAT to have content that is from my own garden zone! I have saved lots of screen shots and the garden plan from your side-garden video. Hoping to recreate it this summer in my own yard! Wondering if you have any good sources you use to purchase all of your trees and plants. P.S. You and your husband are amazing, talented gardens and landscapers!

Greetings neighbor! Thank you! I'm so pleased to hear you found the video helpful! Beginning your own side yard project will be a fun project and certainly wish you all the best. I'm flattered that you liked our design so much 🙂. We purchased the bulk of all of our plant material at Bachmans. For natural stone, my husband used Hedberg Landscape Supply in Plymouth. Good luck and keep me posted!

We planted Wisteria when we first moved in 30 years ago, and have been trying to get rid of it ever since. It has seeded into the woods, across the street, down several paths, and is now killing many trees. We've talked to Rutgers University extension which helps with invasive species but have yet to come up with a solution.

Have you written any gardening books? I totally love your style and need to get my own garden started. I lost my gardens here when we had a modular house put in and the contractor took a bulldozer to remove trees he felt were in the way and plowed my gardens, the trees and the topsoil from my gardens up the hill to our field. Now I need more topsoil and have to begin again with a new garden, but I just turned 70 years old and have more health problems than you can shake a stick at. But I can’t imagine living my golden years with the piles of soil and no garden that the contractor left behind. Luckily, we have beautiful wildflowers that grow around us, but my husband won’t leave them alone and mows them down periodically. We have differing opinions on wild flowers. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@RosannesGarden
@RosannesGarden 4 месяца назад
😖 that contractor!! I can’t imagine how you must’ve felt after that happened. I’m glad however, that you have the will to start over. I have not written any books, but I do think about giving it a go from time to time. My best advice, as someone who is also aging with some issues, is to fill out your garden with a good amount of low maintenance plants, such as hosta. Then, in smaller doses, use flowers or plants you’re especially fond of. My weakness was Calla lilies. But, I had a lot of hosta that I didn’t have to worry about. Wildflowers are lovely, and typically fit into the “low maintenance “ type of plant. Maybe you can convince your husband of their beauty, and ease of care. 🌸🌿🌻🌹🌞 I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!
@ApproximatelyCee
@ApproximatelyCee 4 месяца назад
@@RosannesGarden Actually, your ideas are perfect. If I move the wildflowers I love to the garden and tell my husband he can’t touch them, then he won’t because they will be in my garden. I absolutely adore hostas, which are perfect for my new garden area. I live 20 minutes from Cornell U which has a wonderful herb garden and on the other side is a hosta garden with all kinds of hostas. I would like to plant some herbs as well, since I use them frequently now for medicinal purposes. I’m fortunate that Cornell U is so close and they have classes for the public. I hope you decide to write book. You have much to offer fledgling gardeners. Thank you for your advice.

Good morning Roseanne. Beautiful garden! I just found your channel and love it as I am always looking for gardeners in zone 4. I am also in Minneapolis and am wondering if you have a favorite(s) local gardening center for your trees and shrubs. Thank you for sharing your garden.
@RosannesGarden

Greetings neighbor! I'm so pleased you found my channel! We visit Bachmans and Gertens for trees and shrubs. For perennials, I like Bachmans and Twin Orchards Nursery in Minnetonka. I'm sure Gertens is fine too, they are just a much longer commute for us if we are just picking up some perennials.
@patricialux9454
@patricialux9454 8 месяцев назад
A question I have is how much of the garden contains shrubs and perennials that are native to your area?
@RosannesGarden
@RosannesGarden 8 месяцев назад
That is a great question and apologies for the tardy response. Throughout certain sections of our overall property, the percentage changes a lot. We did create a native woodland garden a few years ago. Here's a link if you're interested ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BbNI0V52H4o.html Other than the woodland garden (which is 100% native), our gardens contain many non-natives. For example, Hosta. I find they are a perfect plant in the garden, requiring so few inputs. However, more and more I try to incorporate natives.

Hi Rosanne , happy Saturday. I loooove your videos. Question, I have q home in the Dominican 🇩🇴 Republic one of my backyard lacks a lot of sun and privacy . What can I plant that will climb on the wall so I can have privacy but doesn't require sun. Thank you 😊
@conniewojahn6445

Plant anything but ivy or kudzo, they're terrible invasive vines. Clematis, camellia to start. Your local plant nursery should be a great source of information and plants which should do well in your area. There's also online searches to try. Good luck.

Hi! Greetings to the Dominican Republic! Thank you. I'm glad you're enjoying my channel🌹. I'm not informed about all the plant options you would have in your growing zone, so going to a local nursery would be your best bet. I recommend Clematis as a plant to look into, especially Clematis virginiana, as it can grow in shady conditions.
