Desmond’s creator Trix Worrell: ‘Desmond’s is a migrant story’

The team behind the hit British sitcom, which ran for six series between 1988 and 1994, tell Black Star programmer Ashley Clark why migrants make great comedy, how Jamaican culture played into their show about a Peckham barbershop and why the gentrification of the area makes the show relevant still. With writer-creator Trix Worrell and actors Carmen Munroe, Ram John Holder and Robbie Gee.

22:01 Shirly man that is so racist tho, what about mixed-raced folk? the show just hired black people on purpose and used white people as goofy tokens, it was a racist statement by Trix, I truly believe this added to the black eye for black people as desmond is always angry and shouting and against gays and women equality, he's not a nice character at all,

Desmon was an eye-opener for me as a Black American hearing about the Black experience from individuals from another country and seeing that we have the same experience. Great comedy from a barbershop in another country but the same experience. Love the family, the loving marriage, kids, and friendships - It covered everything. But most of all it was real. Thank you!

@@mrsmith7936 Reported this comment as it’s pointless, there’s no such thing as reverse racism. No African person before 1492 called any other African an objectifying name in history, others have done that, people who feel a higher shade of Black is any importance. White people are white; climate and the regressive lack of Vitamin D; end of, African people are African, what you saw is what it is, how we are

To me, "Desmond's" was/is to British sitcoms, what "The Cosby Show" was/is to American sitcoms...Sophisticated but down- to-earth, classy but not intimidating, charming but not pretentious, brilliant but not arrogant...Both sitcoms portray Blacks in a positive, wonderful, inspirational, aspirational and upbeat way, and, of course, both sitcoms were/are hilarious. Speaking of "The Cosby Show", Bill Cosby was a big fan of "Desmond's", and the brilliant Norman Beaton even guest starred, in an episode if "The Cosby Show".

I'm white, I hate to bring race into it, but it infuriates me that Desmonds never gets a tenth the love that Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Keeping Up Appearances, or Father Ted get. As for the Cosby Show, what happened to Bill broke my heart. He did so so so much for bringing us together, that it cut me deep finding out about his crimes. It doesn't take away what a great show it was at the time though, and how brilliant the whole cast harmonised.

There is (or was) a BBC radio show starring Lenny Henry called Rudy's Rare Records which I thought had huge potential for a TV series. It was funny in the same way as Desmond's and the characters all had their own personalities. It didn't rely on profanity and had a clash of English/Jamaican values between father and son, much like the culture clash between Desmond and Michael. It's a shame it hasn't been made into a series as I think it could have been really popular.

I don't think Desmonds represent "the black culture" - neither does Emmerdale represent "white culture". Desmonds is a comedy about a Caribbean barber shop. Much of what goes on there is about aspects of a particular Caribbean culture. It does not totally represent Caribbean culture any more than Coronation Street represents all British or English culture. It was enjoyable and funny. It was great to watch a comedy show that featured a mixture of Caribbeans, African and British actors and actresses. The 'cultural' aspect was a "Caribbean" barber shop. It was not about Caribbean or "Black" people.
@jamaicadiaspora6642

Maybe it didn't for you but for me it most definitely represent a side of black culture. Did it say it represented all of Black? White culture has more than just one tv show ever decade to represent it many sides. Can I ask what about that didn't sit well with you?

Oh if only 'Desmonds' had been funny! LWT kept it going far too long through political correctness. Who remembers or talks about it now? It is never repeated because the sad fact is, it wasn't very good!

What??! Desmond's was hilarious and it's still on tv.
@glamdolly30

I guess funny is subjective (and which channel is it repeated on?) It certainly hasn't stood the test of time and is rarely if ever mentioned now. It was produced by a bunch of white, upper middle class TV execs who needed to tick the PC box so commissioned a black writer to come up with this tripe. Glad to hear someone liked it though!

In 2013 , The Africa Channel International relaunched Desmond's - weeknights at 7pm and 11pm. Currently it shows on the channel London Live. My children watch and love it and they were not even born when it first aired. Additionally, what British black sitcom is ever mentioned now? So, your point is kind of redundant because black british work has never stood the test of time in the mainstream or got the right recognition, I can't speak for everyone but I'm Caribbean and within our community and my family, it's still loved and watched.

Jay l yeah I watch it on London live, before that I watched it on the Africa channel, before that 5+ years ago it repeated on the channel trouble and channel 4 and channel 4 have uploaded all the episodes too. I'm only 20 and i've always been able to watch it somehow. It makes me so proud because there is nothing on tv that reflects me as a black Caribbean British girl in a positive light. When my mum introduced me to Desmond's (despite the fact that it is 20+ years old) I could relate because it was so well written and the actors were brilliant. I loved the fact that there was an all black cast and I didn't have to watch a black American sitcom, it was so close to home and relatable. In my eyes and many others it has stood the test of time and they should be very proud of it.

I found your words very interesting. I am white so I guess Desmonds doesn't speak to me particularly but I do get why you feel it represents your culture. I still don't think it's funny I have to say, and that is the number one requirement of any comedy regardless of its setting. But humour is of course totally subjective! Have a great day.

It was one of the only shows in England involving a large cast of black people with a long run time in history,this was specifically featuring the lives of immigrants specifically, like the cultural norms and the comedy. Comparing the show to Emmerdale is a ridiculous comparison only context has to be provided to understand the gaping difference.
