The Hopak is the national dance of Ukraine, and is based on traditional Cossack dances from central Ukraine, as are the folk costumes worn in the dance.
One revivalist trend associated with the Hopak is the idea that some of the moves were based on a traditional martial art of the Cossacks, and so the boyoviy Hopak - fighting Hopak, is an effort to make a modern martial art out of it.
Modern folk dancing in Ukraine preserves only a small fraction of the many traditional dances of the past, but it has turned the folk dancing into a formal sophisticated stage performance. Folk dancing is one of the most important Ukrainian cultural forms of expression, along with vyshyvankas - traditional embroidery, and pysanky - traditionally decorated Easter eggs. Ukrainians also like to sing a lot, and have a developed vocal tradition.

Toronto Ukrainian Festival - is an annual festival in its 26th year in 2022 that takes place in Bloor West Village. It is the largest Ukrainian festival outside of Ukraine. This was from Friday evening, the first day of the 3 day festival.
