Love Joburg too. Remember when Carlton Centre used to host some events at night.

The Joburg CBD IS making a come back. Slowly, the private sector is getting us somewhere. I'd love for the next generations to experience the joy of living and freely walking in the cbd

It’s such a shame that the condition of the cbd makes it hard to see how functional it is when it’s run properly

SA is a failed state, Joburg already looks like a regular african city 😅

Failed State? That’s extreme. If you’re talking about its potential versus where we are today, then that’s a fair opinion (but an opinion is not a fact and is subjective), however we use the term “failed state” too loosely these days. When you look at the political science definition of a “failed state” South Africa is far from it, in fact it is a very healthy democracy, our economy may not be at its best but it still functions despite all of the constrains it faces. SA is a young country and every country has had its fair share of developmental pains. Even in the US there are cities (Detroit for example) that have had their experiences of urban decay, look at New York in the 70’s and 80’s. Most people make the mistake of comparing South Africa with developed countries (the fact that we can compete with first world in countries in certain sectors says a lot about us then them), which is akin to comparing a teenager to a fully grown working man. It took Europe centuries to get to where they are today. The country started around the same period as Australia and for 300 years or so , one wonders why one was first world and the one is unequal. Could it be the creation of poverty (through low wages) or culmination of stuff, with that event that ended in 1994 (that we are supposed to somehow forget about, but still suffer from its effects). Anyways a lot could have been done in the past 30 years (though there have been some successes) we are no where near, where we should be (in terms of what the country is capable of achieving). But failed state, that’s not true, that’s just an opinion that would get you an F+ in a Political Science exam.

That's where most CBD residents are to be honest!! Most residents here can't afford the better parts of CBD

We see them. I stay around the mining district and it's very clean there and there's no crime. I walk at night with no problem.
