Matthew Delmont happens to be one of the most intelligent individuals on earth. The fact that you request him to "climb down off his racist pulpit" only suggests your own ignorance on the subjects of race in American history. Professor Delmont's ideas on race and the current racial situation in the United States are recognized nationally by authorities far beyond your obviously minute mental capacity. Delmont's book and ideas serve to educate the United States in ways people like you couldn't.
Everything that this gentleman said is true. We lived near the old wfil tv station and this was par for the course. As he stated,.Dick Clark had Black artist but kept the dancers non Black or to a minimum. . This was a practice that was done all over Phila. and a lot of northern cities although not at all fair. Ask Charlie Gracie how Dick screwed him. Also, the underage girls, the payola,Cameo-Parkway records,Bob Horne,Mitch Thomas,Dick's father's influence and how he wound up in Phila. Not to mention the companies that he had a stake in that artist had to go through to get on that show......Publicist/press agents had their work cut out for them....
Dick Clark's American Bandstand hosted a ton of black artists from the beginning. The Shirelles, The Jackson 5, Little Richard, The Supremes, the list goes on and on. Quit elieving this kind of crap.
In 1957 in my all white junior high school my art teacher and football coach urged us to watch Bandstand specifically because it was integrated so while it may not have been ideal, we white kids saw it as integrated. So while it apparently was not ideal, it was a program that took, however small, first steps.
@4teepee that's not true. have you ever seen the channel? if anything, it's the only channel where blacks could be seen on many channels back then. i have a problem more with univision because it doesn't show any blacks at all on there and there are blacks in latin america, not just mestizos and spaniards (mostly spaniards).
clark gave black perfomers airtime when most shows did not.. ssh... for his time at the start u knew folks did not want that.. he said fuck um im putting them on .. help to put motown and stack on map... open door policy his show.. and sullivan
@4teepee thats a lie! if you watch 106 and park they have a Latino host and DJ. they also show cased one of the first Asian rappers to sign a major record deal here in the states. you should watch it before you comment. just because all the other channels don't have white or jew in there name does not mean that they are not white based media.. get over the little things we all have culture based channels.
He does have a beef but he's pickin' fly poop outta pepper...There were "Dance Party" shows before AB...but this was the first host that we all knew...was one-of-US. Bandstand NEVER "introduced" anything to US American's except junk teen product's...Dick Clark's 'delivery' was almost as fascinating as the chick's. Clark only played the Top 10...which US Kid's...had already put on the Charts from record sales & Payola. True Story ! I saw Black kids on the show, but very few & not very often, which actually was duly noted. Butt, there was that old cop-out: Money. At that time, station's in the bible-Belt blocked-out Nat King Cole, fer crizake! Just seeing a white girl dancing anywhere near a Black kid would never fly in Dixie. We were told that a local Catholic High supplied a lot of the early dancers & all the cats liked Justine, but there were a lot of other Hotties too. Rarely missed a show...up until & including: Sep. 20th, 1961...When my rich uncle gave me an all expense paid plane ride to San Diego...Naval Training Center. Grateful Fred
@4teepee watch it for your self. what do i have to lie about. you made a blank statement i called you on it and instead of being a man about it you call me a lie. look it up for your self.
