Shin's dialogue feels so different now that stasis exists

I'm with Shin on this. Guardians need to adapt to face the coming storm if they are to win. The man definitely has my respect and trust as a result of all that he has done.

The light is far too bright to always walk, eventually you will burn. The shadow is too dark and before too long, you will turn. I'll walk in the shade and balance the two, and I shall not fade.

Could you imagine the amount of seasons Bungie could squeeze out if they had a Netflix series? How many movies they could create from the lore? If they did this shit right, they could very well turn Destiny into the "Star Wars" of tomorrow.

Byf could read recipes out of a cookbook and make it sound epic as heck.

This whole lore reveal just kinda turned my views on Season of the Drifter around. I’m not much for Gambit, but damn if they didn’t knock it out of the park on the lore.

The greatest part of Destiny Lore...the tale of the man with the golden gun...of Dredgen Yor and Shin Malphur... of The Thorn and The Last Word....just became a million times GREATER

Two things: as we have learned from Mara Sov, when light rises, darkness swells to meet it. So as we become powerful so will our enemy. Maybe by walking the tightrope of grey, we can actually bring a celestial conflict to a halt. Maybe not by vanquishing our enemy, but by making them, less dangerous. Maybe not a friend. But not so threatening. However. What world comes out of the most powerful beings in the universe embracing the very thing that caused multiple extinction level events. On the other hand, does that even count as winning? Would it be better, for us to lose, as we hold our ground fighting as our morals and principles demand us to? If guardians bring an end to the fight of light and dark by blending them into a grey, we would become, not guardians of humanity. But guardians of the universe, constantly rebalancing the scales so the conflict never rises again.

That revelation actually took me by surprise. This gave me a such better perspective of shin from this point

I AM ABSOULYELY SHOOK I've been on a week long binge of your Destiny Lore videos to fill in the gaps that I've missed between Forsaken, Shadowkeep and Beyond Light and THIS BY FAR, BAR NONE, HAS ME UTTERLY SHOOK. I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING. What a beautiful addition to the subtle buildup for us guardians to wield Light and Dark powers in the upcoming expansions. These writers have amazed me, and YOU-- MY GOOD MAN-- ARE A LORE GOD

Seeing this after playing Shadowkeep makes me realize one key truth: The Darkness knows and laughs at us and our small efforts to understand it.

So Shin believes in being "perfectly balanced, as all things should be"? :P

As a hunter, I’m in infinite awe of Shin and hope to walk the gray as a Dredgen and a defender of humanity as he does throughout my days as a Risen

This definitely points towards some sort of Darkness powers in D3.

31:53 at this point, I can see a fire team fighting off the Darkness in a movie trailer with that music and Byf’s voice over it, ending with the Fireteam walking through smoke and I’m sure it would be my favourite movie ever.

I just want to appreciate 30:11 the way the dialogue pauses, and the video and music match each other. Almost to make the point about a Hunter veiling themselves in shadows to destroy evil.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I really want Bungie to continue the Concordant lore from D1

Holy fuck! My mind is legitimately blown. Still, I can't help but notice how, as much as Shin preaches the value of walking between Light and Dark, Darkness is still only regarded as a "tool"; a means to an end, yet the Light is not also described as a tool. It IS the end. In that regard, the balance between Light and Dark isn't quite so equal, not when the Light is regarded as a Guardian's purpose, and the Darkness as a tool in furtherance of that purpose. It is why Shin is critical of Guardians who only cling to the Light as if they are depriving themselves of a powerful tool to aid the purpose they cling so stubbornly to. And yet, all of this is born out of doubt, fear, that Light alone isn't enough. That Light alone will lose to Darkness. The Nine seem to have a similar fear, hence their level of involvement in our plane of existence through indirect aid in order to safeguard their existence that is intertwined with ours. Mara Sov also shares similar doubt and initial ambivalence towards choosing a side. But what if Shin was wrong? What if the Light alone IS enough? Because where Shin's philosophy is founded upon doubt, I would counter that a belief in Light alone, a philosophy of hope, is stronger than one built on doubt. Hope is humanity's greatest superpower, and yet the doubters see such hope as folly. So in this regard, just as Shin burns away the corruption, there is an additional layer to this purification, in cleansing the ranks of Guardians of its doubters, naysayers, the ones who lose hope in the face of the Dark abyss, the ones who are no longer "Brave." Bravery acts in spite of fear, not in reaction to it, and there is a difference. Shin may believe that he's leading Guardians down a path to the next stage of their evolution as a shade of gray, but I would counter by saying that those who do not follow that path, those who remain steadfast in the Light, may end up the stronger of the two, because they are guided by hope and a belief in themselves. They know their self-worth and do not discount themselves in a need to become "more." Sure, Shin might respond by saying that such faith could be considered as naivety or arrogance, but the Deadly Sin of Pride is but a bastardized, corrupted form of what is otherwise something good: Self-Confidence, sustained by the unwavering power of hope. Shin offers a very interesting philosophy geared towards evolving the Guardians into the kind of heroes capable of withstanding the full power of Darkness itself, but if the motto of Guardians is to "Be Brave," I have to wonder how a philosophy predicated on doubt and fear could ever be worthy of being called "Brave."

I’ll consider it, but I shall only wield the dark if there is no other option. Or if there’s lore to be found

I think that to face the Dark, and survive, we cannot be only like the Traveler. Even with all of its powerful light, it was still crippled by the Darkness after their fight. We would end up the same or, most likely, worse since we as Guardians are only able to wield pieces of the Traveler's light. But if we can become more, to be able to use light and dark, than there is a fighting chance that the extinction of humanity can be overturned. If we can be balanced, we can become more than both the Traveler and the Darkness could *ever* be. We can become what they literally cannot be: *both Light and Dark.* I say this not being sure if the Traveler or the Darkness can use the exact powers of the other, but from what I can tell they are opposites in every way, even down to their shape. Thus, to rise above the fight of Light and Dark, we have to try to walk that difficult and very thin gray line.

My jaw stayed open after hearing about shin. That shit is nuts. This was amazing Byf, with each video that comes out I feel more n more proud to be a gaurdian and part of this community. This just makes me feel awesome tbh.

A lot of destruction is on it’s way. The tower could still be standing after THE attack but casualties would be there. Dredgen is just the first stage to darkness. The ships are the final stage and there are more risks than good. Every Titan, every warlock, every hunter; all fighting off the darkness to keep the city safe while the vanguard and drifter would be watching everything happen and guardians fall. Great video Byf 👍👍lore is one thing I like about the Destiny universe. Edit: you may speak your language but I speak TANK!!! Shin Malphur’s lore is very distinctive. A guardian never risen. He was born with light, not forged like the risen. This gives me another perspective of how the traveler choses. The risen were chosen based on “compatible personality”, but it’s possible their ‘character’ was corruptible, or flawed beforehand. Which explains why our past-life memories are suppressed. The light hopes to forge a better character within the risen’s personality. Shin’s character was righteous. His personality was compatible too.

So Shin helped found the Shadows, under his disguise as Dredgen Vale, in order to weed out the utterly insane ones to delve too deep into the Darkness, and find the ones like us, the ones who may follow, but balance the light and dark? I'm gonna need a couple of days to unpack that, because holy shit, that is some deep, and utterly brilliant stuff.

Exactly what I’ve always wanted to do in Destiny. I’ve always wanted to become both Dredgen, yet defend The City and its people.

On the book "For Every Rose, A Thorn" I think the Hive text says "Malphur". All unique characters/letters just like Malphur, and with the twist at the end? It was in front of us ever since the first page was released.

Wow, that was dense. So, basically, Shin managed to kill Yor for wielding both light and darkness. He then made the Dredgen Vale persona in contrast to Shin Malphur to enforce this duality and to be able to confront easily corruptable/tempted Guardians by darkness. Then he proceeds to give our Guardian access to both The Last Word and Thorn to test if we are also ready to do the same and get stronger for the future conflicts in D3.

I think I know why Dregen Bane is researching the Weapons of Sorrow. He's used to fighting the servants of the Dark and the Light. Neither of them fear death, so their punishment must be more severe. I'll see myself out.

I was totally not expecting my titan to follow the path of the dredgen. But here I am, dancing in the grey. Great video again, Byf. I'm actually listening to this one again because of the choices my titan has made as a sort of reflection on the philosophy behind the shadows of yor and their true goals, as well as the revelations that came from the invitations of the 9. In any case, keep up the good work!

I always enjoyed this lore story with connections with the Dredgens and Shin Malphur. I hope one day we get to hear more of this after The Final Shape or when D3 comes out.

OK so I've been kinda taking a break from the story (lore wise) for like past year and been using Byf's videos to catch up, and WOW 👏 I'm so mind blown right now, bravo bungie now that is some amazing story telling right there.

The Light may be too bright for many, but just as many forget that Darkness is just as blinding. Clarity comes with the ability to see and to see in the dark, one must have light, and it stands to reason, in the presence of light, the shadow gives definition to what your gaze meets.

#madetotheend I knew it!? It explains so much how Shin knows much about the shadows (yes I'm well aware of his life long experience with them) but that would explain soooooo much. And I would rather dance in both to save everyone Comment below what you believe too and if you had any theories to about shin as well

I started to play Destiny a couple months ago and I've been seeing this videos to catch up on lore since that's usually the reason I end up falling in love with some games. And this whole story of Dredgen Yor and the Shadows of Yor, Shin Malphur, The Drifter and so on are so fucking awesome. I love when writers create such interesting characters and histories. Recently I've been doing a lot of Shadowkeep stuff and I'm almost done with the "Unveiling" book and it seems to me that Eris Morn is going towards what Shin Malphur mentions on the Thorn lore book. She talks a lot about instead of "giving up on our fears/traumas" we should use them against the Darkness. Also there is clearly a motiff of vengeance in her words, not only to avenge all of the guardians that died during "The Great Disaster" but also to avenge her fireteam. I can see Eris Morn ideas being very close to what Dredgen Vale tells us. At least now I know that my Titan shouldn't feel bad for using Thorn to protect the city and his comrades. I will keep The Last Word and Thorn always close to him, both being two sides of the same coin (well except when my Hunter or my Warlock need to borrow them for a bit). Anyway I'm enjoying the way Bungie is treating the story of Destiny. Can't wait to see what's going to happen at the end of this current season (Season of the Worthy as I write this).
