But the thing is they kept her from growing by making her self-conscious of her voice and pushing Beyonce to the front. And now you see why all of the African-American female acts besides Rihanna fell to the wayside. Bey became a narcissist who stops other black women who she sees as competition.
I miss this kind of singing. Not so many Ariana 'tricks'. We all no she can sing but does she need to show off? Kelly sounds stronger than Beyoncé here. It's a shame LaToya and LaTavia never had more singing time e.g. lead vocals.

Tinker B during their younger days Kelly had better vocals than B.. but over time Beyoncé overtook her cause she got the right push and support. The same could be said about her dancing. Solange said Beyoncé could dance to save her life and now she’s killing it. It’s all about getting the right support and also willingness.
Agree Latavia can sing and perform I think what it was Beyonce and Kelly were prettier and commercially more lucrative and marketable to a mass audience I think Matthew knew this Kelly is not dominant as a performer but facially is the prettiest has a petite body and can appeal to a non black audience same with Beyonce if you're their manager and you're gonna push a select few girls to the top then logic would tell you Beyonce and Kelly had the best chances of succeeding and that they did I always wondered what the rift was between Letoya Latavia and Bey and Kelly now I'm thinking it might have been low key jealousy I'm not sure I have to think that's what it was but again I think Matthew was just playing smart
@@Model_Roe Actually their 1st manager Andretta made Kelly the 2nd lead after Ashley left because she believed in Kelly, Kelly used to live with her before the Knowles took her in, and Kelly’s tone was praised by many of their early producers. Being that the group was always setup with a lead and a 2nd lead, that relegated Latavia and Latoya to be backup( much like Kelly was prior to Ashley leaving). The rift came when Matthew took over management and used their positions in background to make them feel less important in the group as the group was taking off.
People can criticise them all day long but keep in mind that audition is what got them signed and the rest is history. Beyonce, Kelly, LeToya & TaTavia is how it started.
the pre-internet days where you had to have actual talent and audition to get record deals. the days where record executives would go to high school plays, rehearsals, etc. to discover young talent.

the only thing I dislike is that all four of them had beautiful tones but yet only two of them sang lead they could have been more like Xscape and had everyone sing lead because I know all four of them could sing lead but yet they let Latvia's and letoya's blessed voices go to waste as pretty much background singers
Daniel Herrera I couldn’t agree more. I feel like every group should emulate Boyz II Men in terms of allowing all 4 members take lead. The groups biggest hits showcased the singing abilities of all 4 men. That’s how it should be done. There shouldn’t be a “front man” in a GROUP!
they were built as a HARMONY group and that's where they ALL collectively shined. LeToya and LaTavia weren't strong enough at the time to sing lead consistently, especially not live. shit Kelly barely was.
Some groups just have lead singers. coko sinces about 98% of leads on ALL of their music. You rarely hear the other girls sing but no one ever has an issue

Honestly it was her father ! Because in the studio she was always singing while they sat there and she would always ask why she had to sing everything ! I read it in the “becoming beyonce book “ she wanted everyone to sing but the label wasn’t having it

THOSE are the ppl who chooses who sings lead on a song, not the manager. the job of the manager is to market the sound that the label and producers create with the artists. Beyonce was chosen to sing lead, and matthew marketed them based off that. I feel like even if Beyonce wasnt his daughter he wouldve done it the same way bc any idiot could see the potential Bey always had to be who she is today.

To me, it really showed her true style and sound. Her voice was a bit mediocre, but it turned out to be a good cd! I respect Michelle because she knew her place in Destiny's Child. I think if Kelly’s talent would have been nurtured she could have been the lead. Beyoncé led all of the songs. She was given the chance to perfect her voice. The main ingredient for great singers is confidence. Kelly has the confidence now but think of where she could have been as a solo artist.
I honestly feel like Kelly’s confidence has been knocked down over the years. She seemed her most confident from this until about 2008. After that it seemed like the industry was just tearing her down and that’s why he haven’t gotten an album since 2014. I wish they backed her like Bey
Kelly clearly had the better voice at the beginning of DC's career..however she was trained to compliment Beyonce's voice to create the sound of the group hence her always referring to herself as the second lead..However regardless of the outcome..Kelly Rowland is still very successful and an accomplished solo entertainer..They have all came a long way and are due much respect..not many artist can claim longevity in this music industry..ESPECIALLY after coming out of a group..lead singer or not
Sad to say this, but i feel like once they landed the deal, Matthew made SURE to jump on Kelly's confidence and insecurities to bring her down a couple of notches and stay there so Bey could have a DEFINITE advantage (along with not showcasing Toya and Tavia pretty much AT ALL). Because this is one of the few live performances where Kelly's singing isn't off a little. That pisses me off cuz I LOVE me some Kelly and Toya!!! ❤
100% confirmed. After this they sang "Are You Ready?" and "Ain't No Sunshine" (Emotions style) where LeToya sang a crazy high note at the end. The last song sealed the deal.

This was a beautiful performance. You rarely hear Kelly sing like this and hear her true tone. Seeing this really implicated what Tank was saying . I don’t think it was disrespectful towards Beyoncé, but it’s true you never heard HER . Granting that’s how most groups were especially during that time . You see the lead , you focus solely on the lead. Even Michelle had it , her voice is just as unique. I’m not sure who’s the rest of the young ladies in the background but they held it down . With the low vibrato , chorus. They’ve shaped who destiny child was .
That's Letoya Luckett (the taller one who sang soprano) and Latavia Roberson (the shorter one who sang the low notes). You should check out Letoya's music as a solo artist, she's great!

LeToya didn't feel confident as a lead singer in the group nor did she feel she was ready vocally. Because the record was threatening to drop Latavia for not being the strongest singer, they always strived to develop her voice periodically and offer her lead parts. LeToya said in a breakfast club interview that she wasn't ready to lead a song in Destinys child
I know Kelly’s back was hurting after this audition carrying the entire group….their harmonies are perfect and i know Virgo Beyoncé was kicking herself for messing up the dance routine right after she introduced Kelly😅

Yes Kelly has a beautiful voice but definitely not the best because she doesn't have Beyonce's control when it comes to vocals/live singing and it had nothing to do with Mathew Knowles because it was actually the producers/label executives who insisted that Beyoncé should sing lead for all of their recordings/ live performances because she took the least amount time to finish her a record session and while the others had to keep doing double takes because their pitch and harmonies weren't always on point while Beyoncé had the best pitch, could sing in almost any key, and could handle any arrangement and saved the label lots of money on their studio time because she cut record a song that would take over 30min and do it in 15 because she rarely had any pitch problems so didn't have t go back and re-record it again which showed the producers that he was the most consistent and vocally reliable
