Here's weekly dose of your catastrophic engine forensics! Every week you can find a new teardown of some abused, misused and/or poorly designed engine. Here are some of my favorites:

The Nissan VQ40DE I saved from the scrap pile • Found a Nissan VQ40DE ...
Honda J35 that deleted itself • Obliterated Honda Acco...
Today we tear down a highly request Nissan VQ35 from a 2017 Infiniti Q50 Hybrid. The VQ came around in the early 2000's and has been a staple in the Nissan and Infiniti lineup since. This version is a direct injected VQ35HR which in the Q50 is found in the Hybrid models from 2014-2017.
This particular core is blown up BAD, but how did it get so bad? How did the driver not shut it off at the early warning signs? Well the answer may surprise you. We tear this engine all the way down to figure out exactly what went wrong and how it got so bad.
Why am I doing this? My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage business called Importapart. Part of our model includes buying blown up engines and dismantling to salvage the good parts to resell. We do not rebuild or repair engines, we simply supply parts to people who do! I've left links at the top to reach us about parts.
I really hope you enjoyed this teardown, as always I love all of the comments, feedback and even the criticism. Catch you on the next one!
-Eric

@@birtalanlorant5572 I definitely agree there is less to do but your still supposed to change the cabin air filter, the window wipers, and refill the washer fluid once a year. And you have to flush the brake fluid every 3 years and change the coolant every 100k. Any car should be inspected once a year to check the suspension and look for any unexpected damage. Oh and let’s not forget to check the tire pressure at least once a season.
@birtalanlorant5572
@birtalanlorant5572 5 месяцев назад
@@etonmows7901 TBF I dont check the tire pressure, as when its low or high my car tells me. I refill the windscreen washer fluid like once every 6-7 weeks as it only holds a gallon or so worth of liquid, so thats never an issue. I never heard you have to replace wipers, I only replace them when they start to get squiky or they dont clean my windows how I want them, they usually last 3-4-5 years. Unexpected damage never happens, but if I hit a pothole at speed I do pull over and check the car. An electric car would be welcome in my life as it would get rid of the hassle of having to get an oil change every 7k km (4k miles) and not having to replace brake pads like ever :))

The VQ35HR is one of the most robust and best engines from Nissan. It has 360HP and 420lb-ft of torque stock. Mine with upgrades and the Nismo exhaust system I am making 383HP and 430lb-fort of torque. The engine itself has 311HP and 268lb-ft of torque and the hybrid electric motor has 68hp and 214lb-for of torque. The VQ35HR which was originally released in the 2008-2008 Infiniti G35 and Nissan 350Z 2007-2008 was the testing grounds and later the foundation for the VR38DETT in the Nissan GTR. This engine the VQ35HR was also noted and made into a 3.8 liter by Nissan Nismo thus being called the VQ38HR and made 400HP and 311lb-ft of torque Naturally Aspirated.

That engine was accidentally released. It's a futuristic variable-displacement and variable-compression ratio "impingement engine". It operates on the principle of having the engine parts actually striking one another. The mechanical energy from the parts being struck is converted by piezoelectrical crystals to electrical energy, which is used to recharge the battery and power the electric motor. It is truly a scientific marvel, capable of self-destruction on a truly molecular level. This situations called "Piezoelectric Runaway".

The HR is awesome! The regular 3.5 is legendary. Won so many awards. Both offer such a fun ride and plenty of power. But the 3.0 twin turbo was even better in my opinion. As someone that owned Nissans for 8 years and one Infiniti for 3 years I got to experience all three and loved those engines. Only thing that pissed me off a bit is the 3.0 twin only accept premium gas. When the prices were near 4 bucks a gallon. I hated driving my Infiniti. Always loved these engines! I did the brakes, those were EASY, but to do the spark plugs and change a leaky valve cover? Gotta unhook like 20 vacuum lines, 2 coolant lines, partridge and a pear tree. All to take the intake manifold off to get to the plugs! Only reinforces my disliking of Nissans. Not to mention the annoying an unnecessary brackets that exist just to be in the way.

I gave up on oil change intervals with my '03 Sonoma (2.2L). Started out doing 3K-5K, but I realized I was changing oil that was still clear and a little darker than honey. As time went on I switched to just doing every 3 months. Then, 4 months. Now, I've been doing oil changes every 6 months, which seems like a LOT but I can still see through the oil about half the time at the end (sometimes so well it's hard to read the dipstick). I'm aware I have a unicorn, though. LN2 engine has 340,000 miles on it now with no discernible internal noises at all (ed: piston slap when extremely cold... but it did that brand spanking new), good oil pressure, and a little seepage from the main seals. All other gaskets are factory installed... yes, it's never been opened. How? Probably because I drive it every day whether I need to or not, and I do so long enough to get the oil hot... burning any moisture or volatiles out before they can react. That's an informed guess, and I suppose it's good enough because results.

Unintended disassembly of engines connected to hybrid drivetrains are typically especially exciting because the engine just seizing up is usually not an option. Because of how most hybrid drivetrain works, the electric motor(s) in the drivetrain drive the engine. I’m series-parallel hybrids (like a Prius) the engine is connected to the electric motor(s) through a planetary gear set, which is how the hybrid system can vary the “gear ratio” and change the engine rpm depending on load like a CVT. However, if the engine suddenly stops, like it does when it seizes up, those electric motors will spin the engine through the planetary gear set (that’s the same way the hybrid system starts the engine). In a parallel system (like an older Honda or any that use the ZF hybrid system, which is most luxury hybrids) the electric motor is connected directly to the engine. The vehicle will also usually continue to drive (albeit slowly) and continue to try and run the engine even if the engine explodes while driving. I was told by a Toyota engineer that in the 1st and 2nd gen (1NZ-FXE) the electric motors have enough torque to snap the crankshaft in half. There should be software failsafes to prevent that, but they also use a clutch between the engine and transaxle in case one of the two suddenly locks up.

Well, if there's something I've learned through your videos, it's not to keep oil fresh and at right level (that I already knew), but the reason why engines that suffered serious damages at rod bearings are better to be replaced than "fixed", even if the cranksdhaft and rods still look fine. You'll never get rid of all those metal particles around the little oil passages...

My grandpa had a protoge5 , he drove like a madman in that thing everywhere, so driving with him was fun, feeling the long back end swing around tight corners he'd take fast was something else, he definitely surprised me the first time I drove with him when he got that car that replaced an older Pontiac van that he drove more conservative in. He had it up to like 260k miles before the tranny started slipping and he traded it. Good memories though.

As they were running down the road all of a sudden dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree. Driver goes oh it does this all the time. Then comes banging and then boom. Mechanic takes a look goes well you're going to need a new engine. Owners like impossible it's an infinity. Mechanic goes well even an infinity can't run with 4 inspection holes in the block and pan.

It's not preachy to keep hammering away at the importance of regularly scheduled maintenance, especially considering that most people don't even bother to read the owner's manual... My last two cars went 263,000 and 271, 000 miles respectively before one was mechanically totaled (engine out job for rear main seal) and the other totaled in an accident, both were well on their way to 300,000 miles until they encountered issues that would have cost more than what they were worth.

I appreciate showing us the damage that neglected oil changes causes. How bout finding an engine with a million or so miles on it and been taken care of and not blown up. I'd like to see what good maintenance can do over the very long term.
