thanks for the info - had no idea there was a difference, and wondered why some of my bananas were a lot more vigorous growers than others. I have a blue java looking to collect praying hands and Pisang Keling

Homestead FL. So if water & Sword, btw the w in sword is silent, suckers produce fruit who cares what they are called. I bought my house abt 35 years ago and it came with some citrus and bananas. I've got a feeling that younger b plants just have a narrower leaf, that's all. Oh and I liked your video, thumbs up ! Oh again. I just wanted to say something. After dividing the sucker from the parent I found that leaving it in someblace inside, like your washroom for a few days will help the cut scab over a little bit and then it's less likely from rotting. The old lady that I bought the house from had a hose from the washing machine to the banana patch

Thanks, and I agree, as long as they both produce bananas. :-)

I’m having trouble understanding your point? Will both the sword suckers and water suckers fruit when planted?
@TheFrugalHugelGardener
@TheFrugalHugelGardener Год назад
Yes they will, I do not discriminant, I just plant them all. and they all fruit bananas.
@user-xr3qi5cc7q
@user-xr3qi5cc7q 13 дней назад
So what is the point of differentiating them so vigorously?

Hello! What is the best method for getting pups to grow? Best soil. Sun or shade? Watering schedule? I have removed and planted 6 pups, 5 in pots and 1 in the ground, and they have all died. 😢

So what does a water sucker look like?
@MG63
@MG63 Месяц назад
The water suckers will have more wider broad shaped leaves.

Completely confused. Video is too long. Just wanted to know the difference and if you separate to start another plant.

Just getting into bananas plants, water suckers, sword suckers. but where do bananas plants come from.??
@TheFrugalHugelGardener
@TheFrugalHugelGardener Год назад
they come from different countries.
@crude4u1948
@crude4u1948 11 месяцев назад
So what, really, is the difference between them, growing, fruiting, producing? Are you saying to get rid of the water suckers and keep the sword suckers and if so, why?
@TheFrugalHugelGardener
@TheFrugalHugelGardener 11 месяцев назад
just the water sucker has a wide leaf and the sward sucker has a narrow pointy leaf when small. they both fruit, water sucker may take a little longer to fruit. but all fruit are the same.

Thanks some very useful info, my question is does removing the suckers after the mother tree has started to fruit hurt your fruit production?
@TheFrugalHugelGardener
@TheFrugalHugelGardener 2 года назад
I do not separate pups after a plant starts to fruit.
@lauranilsen8988
@lauranilsen8988 Год назад
Ok. So, maybe I missed it but is there any difference in the sword sucker and water sucker besides the leaf shape and size? I thought I heard that the sword sucker will grow faster and produce sooner. The water sucker will produce but it will take longer. Is that true?
@TheFrugalHugelGardener
@TheFrugalHugelGardener Год назад
true, sword sucker will grow faster and produce sooner. But I have so many that I do not notice at all, and I am not a commercial grower, so I am happy with all my Banana plants harvest.

What growing zone are you in? I’m in 9a/10b and it got down to about 30-40 F a few times at night this winter. People told me not to pile mulch because it would get too hot so I’m trying to determine when building up the mulch is beneficial and when it is not. I have blue java and dwarf namwa
@TheFrugalHugelGardener
@TheFrugalHugelGardener Год назад
I pile as much as 2-3 feet of mulch yearly on the all. feeds the plants and helps with water evaporation. I have not had any issues at all.

Question! When transplanting a banana tree, do you prune the top off? If so how low do you go? I topped mine off since the leaves die out anyway, and it looks like the top is hard and dry, making it difficult for the new leaf to come out.
@TheFrugalHugelGardener
@TheFrugalHugelGardener Год назад
when I transplant the smaller ones under three feet, I leave the leaves on. For the larger ones, I trim the leaves because of the wind. you can trim the leave or cut the trunk at any height. you will see new growth in a few days.

ok so my head started spinning. Im sure you are quite knowledgeable, but you could have started the video at the 4 minute mark where your explanation and description of the two different pup styles started.

Question Sir. I've been watching your videos and I've started trimming the leaves like you've shown and put them around the banana tree. The trouble is the water now runs off these added leaves and doesn't get close to the stem. Should I put the cut leave in a circle around the tree instea,d so's to leave a clear patch for watering?
@TheFrugalHugelGardener
@TheFrugalHugelGardener Год назад
I just pile them up all around in no particular order. you could leave a clear patch is watering is an issue. I pile much as high as two feet on the base.

let them get a little larger. dig under and around the pups until you see some roots on them, then separate close to the parent plant.

People use the word pups to describe plants. They are sprouts. They are growing out of the rootzone. Pups are baby dogs.
@TheFrugalHugelGardener

@dolcepescas6153
@dolcepescas6153 6 месяцев назад
In Hawaii they're called "keiki" or kids. Because it's a mother tree, that puts out babies. It's just banana lingo. Don't get too literal. No one calls them sprouts. And if you wanna get real technical - sprouts are brand new growth from seeds
