This is my story as shown on old 35 mm slides that I added to my computer. There are several Soldiers here that I have tried to find over the years, We shared a great experience serving with the NATO unit TUSLOG DETACHMENT 13. If you are out there please comment on the video. Fred Mundy, Larry Boyd, William Farraby, Thomas Wyatt, The WOP, Turkish Sgt Okei, and others. Hope you enjoy

Gerge, thank you for sharing your memories of izmir. I was born and raised there in the 1950ies 60 ies and 70 ies, now living in New York over 30 years. I haven't had an opportunity to visit Izmir for a long time. Your photos reminded me of the good old days in Alsancak and Kordon, listening to the Cigli radio station sergeant Billy Gold's music program.

Fantastic! I spent almost a year there from 1961 - 1962 working for Chrysler Corp. Missile Division on Installation and Checkout Team #2, getting the Jupiter missiles up and running! The Turks were very nice folks, the weather was great, and the food was good too! Would like to visit there again some day! George Smith (no relation!)

Thank you so much Bo for putting these on RU-vid. I had never seen these videos with you in Izmir Turkey. Look at the video above at minute 7.19. You look just like our daddy. It brought a tear to my eyes. I never realized you resembled him so much. Love you so much. Your sister, Joyce

A little before my time, but spent my time in Turkey in the Eighties manning tropo scatter radios on mountain tops. We had one on Yamanlar above Izmir. The city has changed a lot as you can imagine. I still have a house there and visit Izmir once a year. I married an Izmir girl.

My time in Turkey was and still is one of the best times of my life. America is very fortunate to have Turkey as our partner. I hope to visit the new Turkey. Glad you enjoyed the pictures. Regards and take care in these very dangerous times.

thank you for sharing your memories. I was working at diskohit (the mountain) in 75-78 (arny(my once-clear & sharp memories have faded sections on them now--so sad---and I wish too that I could find the turkish askers I knew and american friends too. I did find my Air Force friend Larry Hess and it is so nice to have somebody that "knew you when" back in your life, if only thru facebook. remember the waterfront, the American hospital, the movie theater, the PX. the Kordon hotel & NCO club.

Hello George. This is amazing! I was at 6th ATAF on the base at Sirinyer at the same time you were. I was Air Force in Det 15. Everything you show looks familiar except your work station. I worked in the comm center in the basement of the headquarters building. I immediately recognized your friend Fred Mundy, although I did not know him. His long flattop haircut was unique. You also have a photo of an air force Sgt. sitting on his Lambretta. I knew him, he was a Navajo Indian. Do you remember a great big Spec 4 from Det 13 who had to take a taxi all the way from Ankara to keep from being AWOL? His name was Ransome. Good luck to you. A1C Maddux

It was strange seeing a divided four lane street going between the mini mosque and the Clock Tower on Konak. The whole area is a park today. About every five or ten years, Konak gets a face lift and you never know what it will be. One year, it is a bus terminal, a decade later, it is a park.

Matt, Yes I really hope to get back to Turkey, I have that on my BUCKET LIST. I am so sorry I lost contact with my buddies there, Both Turkish and Americam. My Radio site was manned by all Turkish soldiers and only one American, ME. We really got close. Sgt. Okei, Im still looking for you.

nice to see; the only bit of Izmir I saw was the airport where I went thru customs and immigration to depart from Turkey ..I'd been at Karamursel 19570 1959...I started a website for American Military in Turkey which was taken up by another guy so if you don't know of it, go to merhabaturkey , part 2 :)

Tom, I remember your name, we must have crossed paths somewhere there . That was a unreal experience, I really enjoyed my time in Turkey. I had great Turkish buddies. We were young and Vietnam had not become serious. I keep telling my wife I want to go and see the new Turkey. Great to hear from a SIXATAF TUSLOG DETxx fellow service man.

If you have more of these pictures of Izmir in the 1960 ies and you could share it I would be very happy. I used to live next to the American military hospital. In hot summer nights I could not sleep from the loud sound coming from the air conditioning of the hospital. Best regards.

I am looking for an Air Force serviceman by the nickname of "GOOCH" who was stationed at Izmir Air Base, probably 1961-1963, worked at Sirinyer and lived in Alsancak. Tall, brown hair & eyes.
