This is my detailed review of the 2020 Microsoft Surface Pro X SQ2 after using it as my main computer for over 2 months. Will I Recommend it? How is the Windows on ARM compatibility issue in real life use? is the SQ2 Chip good enough to handle day-to-day use? etc.
In this video, I also include my advice on some things to consider before choosing a laptop to buy.

One of the best reviews I´ve seen about the Surface Pro X! It really looks amazing in black. What I don´t like is the Type Cover when you flip it (only the version with the pen).

I said the Pro X is the most beautiful 2-in-1 and even among all laptops I have seen to-date. That black, ultra slim and sleek body is something to behold. Everyone hate it so much, but its fine. I absolutely loves mine, especially it is super lightweight, touchscreen (yes, must have) and LTE that connects everywhere I go. I have a Razer Blade 15 Advance which is on my desk for obvious reason and iPad Pro which I cannot understand how productivity is possible (sorry, Apple fan 😖). Good video that speak some of our minds.

Thanks for your comment. You are absolutely spot on. The Pro X is just a beauty to have and to hold. I totally love it and it meets all my needs.

SPX is a prototype ARM device which is set to a premium MSRP for some reason. I have both the 1st and the SQ2 revisions and both are in par in terms of usability. If you have intel/AMD specific softwares that isn’t compatible with ARM then stay away from ANY arm based devices period. Otherwise, it’s a slick machine that has ample of limitations.

I picked up a SPX SQ2 on eBay for $900 and bundled with the Brydge keyboard for the ultimate detachable! I'm really liking it and getting about 9 hours of battery life it seems under normal MS Teams usage with work/etc.

I bought it after watching some reviews, including yours. Thank you, I wasn't disappointed at all when receiving it. The pricing-system of MS with selling the keyboard separately is a complete rip-off, but... I think in 4-5 years of expected usage, I'll need another keyboard within the estimated lifetime. For the foresable future I expect Windows on ARM to become a branch of its own, with the differences of VMs, Emulators and Runtime-Windows shading away, allowing to * running Windows@ARM in VMs on Android-powered devices * running Android (Apps) within VMs on Windows@ARM devices, * running Apple-apps within VMs. I guess that's the way we are looking. In the first place I was the proud owner of a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Tablet Gen.2 but it failed unreparebe and so I had to replace it with a similiar device. When I bought the L. TP I thought I'd finally learn drawing on tablets... But that never happened anyway. I indeed used One-Note on a daily basis and so I am not so worried that the professional drawing apps aren't available (yet). Take care, JM

Thanks for your feedback and comment. I also look forward to Windows on Arm being more mainstream and to be able to use VM to run Android Apps on my WoA machine. That would be something.

Would you recommend the 4g version? When is that necessary?
@BenjaminMudiaga
@BenjaminMudiaga Год назад
I would recommend the 4G version as it gives you internet access on the go without the need to hotspot from your smartphone (saves your phone battery). So for mobile use on the go, yes. But if you are mostly at home/office and don't use it on the go, than the WI-FI version may suffice.

I bought the SQ2 16GB with a third party pen and it's been a terrible note taking experience. Quite frequently the pen is not precise when I'm handwriting and the characters end up being horrible in comparison with my actual handwriting. Have you had a similar problem with yours? Or would you say its only a problem with third party pens?
@BenjaminMudiaga
@BenjaminMudiaga Год назад
It is probably a situation with the third party pen and it's firmware interface. I have had no issue writing on the SPX with the Surface pen.

Bestbuy has an open box sq2 model with 16gb of ram for 1050 buckd. If you use it at all; how well would this support making very basic 3d models in paint 3D? Really debating on this or the new ipad pro. My other uses are all mainly browser based as a student, so as long as it can handle that without lag (maybe 3-4 edge tabs open at a time, and word open)
@BenjaminMudiaga
@BenjaminMudiaga 3 года назад
It can handle all basic task pretty fine. No lag. I leave over 12 tabs on my browser all the time. (By the way, Edge now let's idle tabs go to sleep and save on your processing power). As for Paint 3D, you should be just fine with the Pro X. Obviously if you need much more power in a tablet then the iPad pro is your best choice. It is not a computer though. Hope this helps you

What did you get? I finally gave up on ipad. A lot of basic things have no app available, or is cumbersome, of even if a good app exist, they're all going to subscription models which I refuse to support. For that reason I'll still with windows and android.

So what would be the best or appropriate option for Microsoft Surface Pro X : Windows 10 32bits or Windows 11 64bits emulation?
@BenjaminMudiaga

Apps compatibility is resolved. Full windows 11 x86 64bits emulation runs smoothly. Windows 10 is not the best for this device

With windows 11 ARM64bits emulation, is it now possible to install 64bits apps on surface pro x without any problem?
@BenjaminMudiaga
@BenjaminMudiaga 2 года назад
The windows x64 emulation works well enough for the hardware since windows 11 came out last year. You can install any apps and you don't even remember that it is an Arm64 hardware. The device itself is not the most powerful hardware as you already know but for apps compatibility, that is now fully solved

I have used the SQ1 Surface Pro X for a year and it is ok. I would not recommend it to anyone as it remains a work in progress and compared to Apple Silicon is several gens behind. My workflow matches what the X offers so in that context its limitations are not deal-breakers, but they will be for many others. The disappointments include so-so battery life, I was expecting much more, my Galaxy Book S (WOA) gets nearly twice as much! The keyboard remains hit and miss on the go as I use it on my lap more than a desk. However, the Brydge keyboard solved this and makes it a far better laptop device. Having used much faster devices the Pro X is obviously slower and less refined. So my conclusion is that you would be better suited to buying a MacBook Air and iPad for a similar price as the SQ2 Surface Pro X. They would combine, offer a far better user-experience as iPadOS remains far superior to Tablet mode on Windows, and the M1 Apple Silicon is leaps and bounds ahead of the SQ2. Thanks for your thoughts and although the Pro X is not as good as I expected, it is much needed in the space and hopefully Qualcomm and MS can start catching up with Apple.

I've been browsing reviews of the SPX SQ2 and can never get a straight answer on how fast it is, what intel chip it compares to. The Geekbench Scores are absolutely abysmal - like 800 single core, which is like 4 generations ago's Intel i5, which in practicality, is like clicking on excel, and then waiting 20-30 seconds for it to open. That's pretty horrible. So the implication is that the SQ2 is that bad, But from everyone's reviews, they say it's faster than that, it's pretty fast, lots of browser tabs open, etc. I would never try that on a computer that has a geekbench score of 800. SO MY QUESTION IS - open up excel and tell me how fast it opens. How fast does the performance feel? like 8th gen i5? which is pretty sorry, or 11th gen i5 which is snappy as hell, or 10th gen i5, which is pretty respectable. I've watched like 20 reviews of Surface Pro X's and no one has answered this. Everyone wants to tell us how pretty it is. Come on man, just open some apps and SHOW us how fast it is compared to intel cpus.
@BenjaminMudiaga
@BenjaminMudiaga 3 года назад
Thanks for your comments. I have been using the device (SP-X SQ2) for over 8 months now. The device is not the fastest but it is fast and smooth. You click on Excel and it opens in about 3 to 5 seconds depending on what else is running. Same with web browsing. It is like using any other fast computer. I would say like a 10th gen Intel I5 but I may be wrong as I don't have one of those around to compare. It is definitely not slow like waiting for 10 secs or more. The point is that the ARM process makes it far more efficient, so a small power Chip with low scores can process much faster due to this efficiency. And now with Windows 11 running on it, I observed it is even much faster and smoother. For me, it is a very good device that does all I want to do quick enough. Add that to the fan-less requirement, cool to touch, light weight, battery life, etc and it is easily an amazing device for its size ( not in the class of an M1 powered device though)
