Great review as usual. When I contacted Faber Castell about these pencils with some questions again they were a bit vague but they did say that different graphite varies in carbon content so from that I would assume that they have a higher carbon content than normal graphite pencils and I would assume this is why they don't feel as smooth. They did put some other jargon in the email but that was the main thing that I took from it. Thanks again for a great video.

The main attraction for me re the F-C Matte pencils is that they combine seamlessly with ordinary graphite. You can layer the matte pencils over ordinary graphite or plain graphite over matte, which makes it much more easy to punch up a dark value later in the game. That’s simply not possible with the M-S Black, nor for that matter with pure carbon or charcoal. Five stars for that property alone! 0 stars that they don’t make a version of the range for lead holders…yet….???

Thanks for this review! Just in these days I discovered these pencils, and I was wondering how they were, and here is the explanation! You are great! 😊

Hullo Harry! Excellent graphite drawing! It seemed almost photographic! I have not done much graphite drawing in quite a while, if I am going to create a grayscale picture I reach for ink or a neutral black watercolor paint! I am not as patient as I was when I was younger! ANY pencil work is very time consuming graphite or color pencils is just in my repertoire these days! I thank you for sharing your exhaustive review and quality video, excellent review and we appreciate your generosity and skills in sharing your opinions on these new pencils. Please take care and keep safe over there!

Some time ago I tried the Lumigraph pencils from Staedler and really enjoyed them. I think that both would be comparable. I also tend to prefer the feel of the pencil. I can be light handed enough with the 2B but I admit that I really enjoy them. My Matt spray fixative does help reduce the shine also. I have the Derwent tinted charcoal and Conte set for my charcoal sketches anyways I was thrilled when they came out. I use cotton swabs for smudging. Great review and I wondered if the Lumigraph were going to be mentioned. I enjoy your reviews as always. Thank you and awesome drawing!!

Hi, thanks for the video as always. I watch your videos for some time now and learned a lot. This time I have to add something: Graphite is Carbon just in a special structure. Also Charcoal consists of Carbon. I am not a chemist though but had a lot of chemistry lessons at university :). I'd be curious about a comparison of the erasability of all of these brands.

I completely apologise, it never even occurred to me to show how they erase and yet it is such an important feature. I will create a test today and upload the results to Instagram and add the results to my written review. Thank you so much for pointing that out. I do know that they are all basically the same, only because my Son is at University study Aerospace Engineering because he loves Physics, Chemistry and Maths, they are the subjects he is studying and it was Jude who pointed that out to me a while ago, showing me the different elements on the periodic table. But for artists, they are mainly sold as separate mediums and I didn’t really want to get bogged down in a Chemistry lesson in the video, especially given my son isn’t here and I probably would have said something monumentally wrong. I’ll tag you in my post of the eraser results later today

@@TheArtGearGuide Didn’t even know about this product. Looking forward to the eraser test, but as a mineralogist and rockhound, I just wanted to point out one more example of pure carbon with a “special structure:” Diamonds 💎

@@ellariel7457 Saw a funny comic a couple of days ago: a coal and a diamond sitting on a table, obviously on a date. Coal is like: "You look different", Diamond: "I was under a lot of pressure lately".

@@TheArtGearGuide Already had a look at the results. This is quite helpful for me as I prefer sketching with a dark not shiny colour :). So thanks a lot. And I totally see why you wouldn't want to go into a chemistry lesson. Especially with such vague information given by the company.

A tremendously helpful review. I already have multiple Conte sets because I love the Pierre Noire and Carbon but they are rough. I bought the Faber Castell Matt set based on your review. I wonder if you have made your own graphite powder from any of these pencils and if the sheen is mitigated by using a brush?

Hi Harry, that was a really good comparison with other pencils. I've got the Faber Castell 9000 pencils, the Faber Castell Matt, the Staedtler Mars black and also the Faber Castell aquarelle water soluble pencils. In terms of the feel of the matt pencils on paper, they feel closest to the aquarelle. The resistance on the paper and the way the graphite lays down its grain are similar. I've wondered if there's something from the formula in the aquarelle present in the matt pencils.

Please, Would you order all the Conte Pierre Noire pencil grades, or a hard a medium and a soft, are enough?

I’d love to try the Generals range of. Graphite and Charcoal but they are not easy to come by here in the U.K. I’ve always loved the look of them, and what other artists can achieve with them.

Yeah, I am a disabled British Army Veteran, I had my spine shattered and Crushed and so to stop my taking my own life from the amount of pain I am in, I have to take a vast amount of pain medication, fentanyl, morphine, Tramadol, Gabapentine, lidocaine, ketamine, Amitriptyline and 6 weekly infusions of Lidocanie. I do apologise if the stammers, momentary lapses of concentration bother you but unfortunately there is not a lot I can do about it. Believe, I wasn’t thrilled when I had my spine shattered, it wasn’t a pleasant experience but I suppose the silver lining in it all, brought me to art so I could chat with delightful people such as your good self. If there is anything you’d like to know about art products I am always happy to answer question and writing them thankfully doesn’t come with gaps or stammers or chunks missing. So for the inconvenience with my RU-vid videos not being to your standard, but I do also provide a written review for every video uploaded and like I say, there are no problems with the written reviews, at least nothing relating to your question.
