Pokemon has been a worldwide phenomenon since the nineties and the success of Pokemon Go in 2016 shot it back into the mainstream once more. It’s only natural then that a Pokemon movie soon went into development, cashing in on the Pokemon-mania. Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular Pokemon, and certainly raises some questions. Like why is the first part of the movie so depressing? What was the bad guy even trying to accomplish by putting everyone in their Pokemon? How did Tim get down that skyscraper so dang fast?

Hollywood execs would ruin Team Rocket. Their bright, fun, cartoonish personalities & designs would clash with the ugly hyperrealism. The writers aren't clever enough to make them funny or even likable. Imagine how good the new Pokemon anime would be if the animation budget was a tiny fraction of how much it cost to make this... thing.

It was pretty obvious from the trailer, the son is the only one who can understand Pikachu, Pikachu has amnesia, the Dad is missing, etc.

I didn't notice either but then I hadn't seen the trailer before going to see it. Saw Bill Nighy as the villain immediately though. Overall I thought the film was fairly average.

Don’t worry I didn’t see any of the twists coming. I was focusing on the Pokémon and trying to remember their names. I think I saw Ash as a male trainer in the arena shot. Overall I liked it, but it could still use some Team Rocket.

@@jonh387 I don't agree, X & Y were main series Pokemon games entirely based around the war of Kalos, & that was one of my favorite parts of the game. This movie's already had a pretty dark tone at times, & referring to any of the in-game Pokemon Wars wouldn't make it any darker & would still be staying loyal to the source material.

It's a total waste of time and money for anyone who isn't a squeeing fanboy/girl. Kids will enjoy it just because it has Pokémons in it, but it's an embarrassing groanfest for any adult not blinded by nostalgia-vision.

@@bspeers76 Yeah, I don't get why people thought it would be good. The moment I saw the trailer, I said I wasn't going to. It's a blatant money grab, and having Reynolds (not a good voice actor, voice VERY recognizable) do Pikachu is the most jarring thing they could have done.

Well I saw the whole dad Pikachu thing but I didn't see the old guy being the real bad guy in the sun actually being the good guy. And I didn't predict the human Pokemon thing. I feel like a lot of people try to say something was incredibly obvious after the fact with no proof that they knew it beforehand. Ack! Spoilers! But the whole video was one so... the Torterra scene elevated the material, it was clearly meant to be a Studio Ghibli moment. It’s the most stunning non-violent CG spectacle in film history, IMO. The critics may not be too kind to this film, but it’s superior to the recent Star Wars films, easily. Like Spiderverse it’s just one more incredibly made piece of cinematic competition to Disney. I hope this inspires them. Edit: Torterra? Elevate? ‘Pun was unintentional but, there it is.

The thing about Pokemon is this: When they "evolve" they don't actually evolve. They undergo metamorphosis. The difference is pretty easy to memorize. Evolution happens to populations while metamorphosis happens to individual specimen.
