Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission identified the boater they said was involved in a deadly crash off Key Biscayne over the weekend.
We'll see how the investigation goes. If see was water skiing I believe in the bay see was using a ski rope 75ft or less. The pull boat stop almost immediately. That means she was most likely 30 to 40 yards behind the boat. Why would a driver of this size boat want to drive at speed this close to another boat. No one on the boat would see what had happened or see the reaction to people on the boat they just passed? Very hard to believe no one on the drivers boat didn't see nothing?
with all that boat in front of you and a girl in the water.?.....How could it be anything but an accident? put yourself behind the wheel....All that white fiberglass bobbing in front of you and the girls head way down below...he prolly had no idea....just saying...
@@debc7341 The bow makes a big "thump" when it goes up, then smacks back down on the water. It could be very hard to know you hit something, just from the sound of the hull. Just saying.....He could have been drinking, they may not have had a spotter and/or using a flag. A lot of ifs and buts. We don't know yet. But so sad that a young girl is gone.
As with ALL things TRUTH IS MUST...so you don't have to say are trying to "justify" it. It might have been accident for real. He may have not known that he even ran over her. that's a big boat with a big bow and even a less that one foot swell can obsctruct the view of a boater from seeing a person in the water. The people who are going to say other wise are people that don't even know how to swim much even ever drove a boat in their lives. This is were the media gets to setting the narrative now. We all know how people like to cover up facts with feelins to suit their own ends.
@@NoToBigBro it's only considered a hit and runn by the law if YOU KNEW YOU HIT AND THEN RAN...ONLY IF YOU KNEW or WERE AWARE THAT YOU HIT SOMETHING..IF YOU HAVE NEVER DRIVEN A BIG POWERFUL BOAT THEN YOU NEED TO BE QUIET BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE THE EXPERIENCE TO UNDERSTAND THESE KIND OF THINGS.
@@garycallihan4206 The flag thing is interesting. We've been wakeboarding/tubing/etc.. here in FL since the 80's and I have never even heard of a flag for this, much less seen one. It has always been common sense that when you see someone skiing, you expect them to fall, so you don't follow directly behind, give lots of room and watch very very carefully. The unfortunate reality here is we've got tons of new people moving in every day and they're not educated and do really stupid things, like follow directly behind a skier. And now these super big boats are everywhere. I think there are more boats now with 3 and 4 motors than with 1. We've even got a few of the big 60+ foot center consoles around here, I was behind one last weekend that had 5 of the seven-marine engines on it. These guys drive right through what has traditionally been, for the natives, wakeboarding water. Another one ran over a snorkeler a few years ago. The guy was going 50mph in a 36' center console over a reef where diving was popular, claimed he didn't see the dive flag though it was wrapped up in his props when he stopped the boat. The snorkeler didn't die but had two broken legs, lost one arm at the elbow and his other wrist was badly hurt. That boater did stop and tried to help, but another case of not paying attention closely enough. Just too many people here now with boats who shouldn't be driving boats.
Yes, my brother in law has a boat on a small lake in northern pa, I have seen fish and game pull over people for not having a spotter for pulling an intertube, much less a skier.
We had a boat on Wallenpaupack growing up. We had rules and I was taught that other boaters don’t keep us safe, we keep us safe. You need a spotter and we always had a second person stationed next to the driver to tell the driver when the spotter waved and yelled. The spotter doesn’t take eyes off the skier. Then we also had a flag we put up on the boat to indicate we were towing and we knew that the moment you surfaced after falling, you held your board or ski in the air as high as you could and waved it. My guess is that these folks were novice boaters and didn’t know what they didn’t know so they scoffed at boater safety training. And you NEVER double tow unless you are basically alone in your area of the lake.
@@JerbPa You make many good points, especially about the hazards of double towing. I grew up boating in coastal salt water Georgia creeks. We were mostly alone and never used a flag, although we always had a dedicated spotter and didn't rely on a mirror. Boating on a large lake on weekend makes me anxious as heck. Too much congestion.
It wasn't a ski boat, it was a 42 footer filled with 13 teenagers. They were towing 2 girls at once but they dropped off at separate times. So by the time they turned that big boat around they were both sitting ducks
Only logical explanation is that he did not see her, if one has experience boating then you will know that a boat that size won’t even feel the smallest hint of hitting someone. Nixon is next to a big channel where boats are coming in and out of biscayne waters at full speed, if she fell and floated into that channel which is very close by, then that’s not the boaters fault. This guy is not at fault, it’s a tragedy and a horrible accident but I’m very certain he did not see that girl.
@HairHoFla There are always two sides to the story. Agreed this is a terrible loss and horrible tragedy. The old man may/maynot be guilty of hit and run, but that doesn't mean poor decisions by the ski boat captain didn't contribute to the outcome. 13 Teenagers on one boat seems like a bad idea. Two persons on two ropes at once can cause problems. What was the experience of the captain, designated observer, and the two persons being towed? An important practice when two are being towed is IF ONE FALLS, THE OTHER MUST LET GO IMMEDIATELY. (Captain must brief/instruct skiers of this practice.) No skiers behind boat can be recognized faster by observer than if just one disappears. Second skier dropping immediately keeps the two people in water close to each other. If the second skier is still hanging onto the rope, then maneuverability of boat is RESTRICTED. Best case is if BOTH skiers are in the water together in the same vicinity, and boat can turn more quickly to RETURN to skiers in the water. Videos seem to show that the victim's craft was a large "party barge/pontoon boat." Such vessel cannot turn and recover downed skiers as quickly as a lesser loaded runabout style boat. Let the investigators complete their inquiry before you condemn anyone.
she was bobbing in the water after falling down skiing, why wasnt the tow boat circle back? did they not see her fall down? ive been bobbing and floating and almost gotten run over but the tow boat stopped them sounds like the tow boat didnt take care of her safety..the old guy probably didnt know he hit anythiing
Isn't it strange that the news haven't even mentioned the driver of the boat, probably it's a family member. The driver probably had too much to drink.
@@jimc6687you mean he maintained his speed and kept going almost like ge didn’t know he hit anything… you wouldn’t feel a thing in a boat that size let alone see a girl while on plane

She fell in the water. I think that made it difficult for Carlos Guillermo Alonzo to see her. I sure hope she wasn't wearing green; that makes it even more difficult for skippers to see her.
My prayers are with you, Ella Adler's mother, the family, and your daughter's friends who were in their boat. This is extremely tragic, and I pray specifically that that they may get over this part of their lives.
The first thing you do when you sey out to water shi is choose a spot on the water outside shipping lanes and far from any boats. If you can't find that, then don't water ski. Never swim in a boat channel.
I agree as a 78-year-old man riding a boat that size it’s hard to see somebody in the water so in my case, I see it as an accident so I guess the boater didn’t get charged
Due to the sound of the water and the sound of the boat, especially the boat that size it would be hard to determine if he hit somebody or the boater hit someone. If he says he didn’t know he hit somebody then we would have to go by his word. I’m sure they would have him take a lie detector test to prove he didn’t know or that he was telling the truth. You don’t get arrested for accidents.
i work on boats that size or bigger and I've been on many boat rides for work, the engines are very loud and when going fast it would be really hard to see someone's head poking out of the water and if you hit them you'd likely have no idea it even happened
My heart goes out to her family, I am very saddened that this can happen. Let’s all give Love to this family, and make changes that this doesn’t happen to any other family. May their beliefs comfort them .
This is definitely not a clear cut “hit and run.” There is every likelihood the boater did not see her and did not feel or hear hitting her. If that makes no sense to you, then you’re not familiar with boating beyond a rowboat or kayak. Anyone who’s been in a large speedboat knows that just hitting heavy wake can sound and feel like you hit something solid. It’s noisy, incredibly windy, with heavy vibrations and constant movement and motion. It is the responsibility of the boat that’s towing to do so in an open, clear area. When my parents and grandparents couldn’t find us an open, clear, safe place to wakeboard, then we did not wakeboard that day. Period.
@@JohnnyJohns-eb9qb I’m sorry to lecture, it’s just frustrating to see this older gentleman castigated before we know the facts. I’m also tired of hearing about parent’s right when I’m here wondering about parent’s responsibilities. You can’t place your child in an unsafe situation and then blame someone else when things go sideways.
Exactly, I have a 35' cc in FL and this boat looks like mid 40s or a little bigger but if someone fell in the water from skiing and the only thing sticking out of the water is their head you'd never notice that. Where was the boat pulling her is what I'd want to know.
@sjb3460 That is entirely expected if he didn’t know he hit someone and isn’t glued to the news. Boats are not like cars. You can hit someone and not know whatsoever, especially in a big boat like this guy had.
Probably not an accident. I’m not saying it was intentional. But accident is not used much anymore - it’s being replaced by negligence. In this case, it could be negligence by the driver of the boat or the person who was responsible for watching this girl ski. It’s early yet, but it certainly seems as though negligence will be the outcome. Very sorry for the family. A devastating loss under any condition.
78 years old and obviously VERY wealthy. He’ll hire a top notch attorney and claim he’s old and had no idea he hit her. He will pay out big in civil court but will receive no other punishment for this. Very sad but unfortunately that is probably how this will go down. Hopefully that poor child has moved on to a better place and may she rest in peace.
He may not have known he hit in, in a boat that size you wouldn't notice it and more importantly what was she wearing when she fell from skiing and where were the boaters towing here while skiing. People want to place blame w/o knowing all the facts but this girl w/dark hair it would be very hard to see in the water unless she was wearing a bright colored life vest.
Godawful! Just horrible. We need more facts before we jump to any incorrect assumptions. Do we know if the area she was in was designated to be skiied in? Do we know if perhaps she fell into his path and he was too close to avoid her? Do we know if the boater was speeding in an area designated for skiing? Do we know if the boater even saw or heard her and callously ran away or, with the roar of those 4 huge outboard engines and a 78 year old's hearing did he even hear his boat hit her? The boater may have been totally unaware. We need these and other answers. If the DA investigates and the boater appears at fault then it should go to a hearing for a judge to determine if prosecution is warranted. There is no good outcome. I am so very sorry for this young lady and her loved ones.
Its a terrible accident but you could put blame on both boat operators for not paying close enough attention to the situation. Im sure they both feel awful, but pulling a water skier or wake boarder, especially a kid,in a busy body of water is a big responsibility
Having fun can be dangerous and requires extra vigilance, that few give... because they are having fun. Not just the victim but the other boat, you either can get into trouble or trouble can find you. Life ended through no fault of hers.
before my son could even talk in complete sentences, he would watch for "dead heads" in the harbour as we went under two bridges into the open ocean in Canada. Logs, debri, anything. you always have a mate whose focused on safety as you, as the driver, may have many things to keep on track.
I do not believe we realize the magnitude of loss that occurs when our young people are taken away from not only the love of their family and friends, but from the love of the world as well. We will never know what this young lady could have achieved in life. What her children, grandchildren etc… would have achieved. We maintain that her (all) life has great value and those who needlessly take it away should be held strictly accountable.
That is true but listening to the video and reading the comments I am starting to wonder if this was truly an accident. I have kayaked near those waters in groups and those key Biscayne waters are no joke. It is not for someone to be swimming or bopping their heads. I remember watching those big high speed boats and if a paddle boarder fell the group would always be near. The question is ;Why was this boat so close to a skier? Or why was the person operating the boat with her skiing not turn around right away to pick her up? There is a good reason people are not swimming those waters freely. The waves, speed boats, etc.
You cant blame the boat driver. Did the ski boat have proper flags were they following proper rules. Let’s not rush to blame looks like we need much more info.
@@xcaret-ns3pb nope. A boat towing skier has certain rules to follow flags to fly and a spotter. Let’s just wait and see you Americans always just start pointing and yelling and screaming crap. Truth is what’s needed all the facts.
I agree. Too many people rush to blame when sometimes there is no one at fault. Accidents happen. The old man might not have known he hit the girl? Having said that, I offer my deepest condolences to the young lady's family. May she RIP. It is so sad that she died so young, but when the reaper want you, he finds you.
There are a lot of good comments here, many from people who know speedboats and waterskiing/ wakeboarding. It’s a very dangerous sport. The boaters are right that in a large fast boat every wave feels and sounds like you hit something. And you can’t see anything near the bow of the boat because of the angle it rides above the water. And to see a small head in large bay with waves is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. I’ve been that head in a flat small lake and it’s scary. You are completely defenseless waiting for your towing boat to circle around and protect you. And that takes a few minutes. A very sad tragedy for everyone involved and most especially for the young girl.
Media, you best be cautious in your delivery, tone, and emotional bent. That's a large vessel. I was in the USCG over 50 years, have seen things - after the fact, or when a tragedy was occurring. I feel sad for the family's loss.
the driver of the boat pulling the female skier is just at fault.Failing to turn the boat around quick enough to go back to the fallen waterskier! and knowing that other boats are following!
As a competitive waterskier for near a decade (a while ago, but this hasn't changed), you ALWAYS hold your ski up giving you the best chance to be seen. Many people just don't do this. You also ALWAYS wear a bright colored vest. But there are other choices in vest colors, which is...a choice. I am in no way what so ever blaming the skier, and she may have done everything right. I also have no idea how much traffic there was in the area. Also, the tow boat should have a mirror and/or a spotter and should stop immediately and circle around. Whether that happened or not, I have no idea. This, no matter what, is truly tragic, and I am very sorry for the family. BTW, he likely didn't "run" given a boat that size and weight, he very well may not have even known he had hit her. I certainly wouldn't draw the conclusion he knew unless there was some evidence. Someone mentioned waves...you really should not ski in "waves". Depending on how high, it's just not fun, and it IS dangerous as was mentioned, as no one can see you. Not sure if there were waves or not, but most skiers ski in the early morning, when the water is really calm. This is all a general comment on waterskiing.
Here in northern CA, aside from water ski requirements, when we scuba dive we all carry inflatable 6-foot vertical orange sausages. It's still not a guarantee.
🤨I hope they have footage of him getting onto his boat, manning the boat, docking the boat & getting off the boat WITHOUT any assistance. I mean, that one photo of him by the media, come on now🙄
I learned to accept that if I die because of a freaking accident like this, it's destiny. Nobody should be blamed. Kind of like the movie, Final destination.

If she was in the navigation channel it is the fault of the driver of the ski boat. A person in the water is impossible to see. The driver of the boat that she fell in front of probably never saw her, never realised he hit anything. I have had reckless ski boats drop skiers right in front of my boat while I was navigating a narrow marked channel. It was just dumb luck I didn't hit them.
But did this other boat operator see this poor child? I know this is tragic for all but lets be real, did this poor man even see this child? I have a very strong feeling this was nothing more than a very tragic accident.
Why didn't he turn himself in on Monday? His lawyer could have called the district attorney to arrange a private surrender. Instead he waited until Wednesday. I think I know why.
I don't have the words to share my sorrow for your beautiful daughter. My hope is that you will find the light that shined so bright within your daughter.
Because at the end, the one that will end up taking the short end of the stick will be the old man driving a large boat and not the owner of the boat (The Careless idiot that should have known better not to take a young girl to ski in waters with heavy boat traffic) who was pulling the girl on skis, he will most likely never be mentioned or dealt with in court, get it. That's like saying, we'll cross the street and don't worry, a car won't hit us and if it does, we'll just take them to court and sue the sh** out of them type of attitude, I say to these idiots, lucky if you survive dumb a**.
Thats a yaht...not a boat. Pretty hard to see a downed wake boarder in the water. Might want to recoinsider where you conduct water sports activitys. Can a semi truck driver easily see a peraon sitting in the middle of a freeway?
This is a tragic event. I believe the fault show fall on the operator pulling her on the wake board. You shouldn't have wake boarders out in boat traffic areas. Carlos may not have seen this girl in the water.
Tow boat captain negligence and spotter if any are the ones to be looking at skier down you turn around no excuse may not see a little girl in the water but a big boat in your path not so hard to miss blame the ones responsible
It does not matter hold old, or how big the boat. It is the operator's responsibility to know what is going on in front of the boat they are driving. You don't just blast along blindly.
What was his negligence? You've heard many boaters from the area mention that this is a poor choice of location to waterski, also the fact that others state it can be impossible to see a coconut floating in choppy water. A preventable tragic accident, yes.
The same as when a driver hits a person in the road…”I didn’t see them”….oh well…sucks to be you…but not as bad as her huh???…get in the car….you fled the scene of an accident…you are under arrest…shut up and get in….
Except on the water they have these things called waves where things float up and down in and you actually can't see something and you the fact that 90% of the person's body is underwater. Not even close to the same as being on the road, get out and drive a boat then come back and comment.
We skied a lot on busy lakes. Our boat driver was always very protective of our skier. An observer would say “spill” when the skier fell and especially if any other boats were near, we’d turn quickly and head for the skier. The skier knew to raise a ski so they’d be more visible to the other boater. This person driving the boat that hit the girl is heartless. How could you leave her like that? My heart breaks for her family.
Carlos will be free in no time, because his name is Carlos from the Gables (Miami) they will find some stupid excuse to make it not so bad and try to make the family of the little girl think there wrong.

The old man was driving the boat that struck and killed her, but that does not mean the actions and decisions of the party-yacht (41 foot) boat's captain did not contribute to her death. He failed to protect her life.
Tow boat captain should not have had people in the water in a high traffic area. He is the one that put those two skiers at risk, resulting in one death, and ruining several other peoples lives. Evidently, he is politically connected to powerful people, which is why the news is focusing on the other captain. The captain of a vessel is always responsible for the safety of his passengers.
The report wasn’t very descriptive about the circumstances. All I got was that she was wait-boarding(?) and fell, and another boat came up and hit her. (I guess you have to be a Florida resident to know what wait-boarding(?) is. I used to water ski, and it’s very common to fall, especially if you’re a novice.
