The bent rod is supported at A, B, and C by smooth
journal bearings. Determine the magnitude of F2 which will
cause the reaction Cy at the bearing C to be equal to zero.
The bearings are in proper alignment and exert only force
reactions on the rod. Set F1 = 300 lb.

can you please explain a little more as to why there is no Cy,By, or Az in the free body diagram, thanks
@drc022800

Because these are journal bearings and not thrust bearings. Thrust bearings restrict movement in the Cy By and Az directions so there would be a reaction force but since these are journal bearings the movement is not restricted and there is no reaction force.

Many of your videos are helpful, but on this one I think you skipped over alot of important details that would help students follow what you're doing.

for equation 4 before you moved the varablies to the other side why is 212.13 postive and not negative

Shouldn't equation 6 have Ax(4) because you put 5 but that is the distance from the force.
@kiss6917
@kiss6917 2 года назад
Equation 6 comes from the moments around z, therefore the distance is involved

yes it should be ax 4 and not ax 5

I don’t understand why we don’t have moments Mx,y,z if the object is restricted from rotating abt these axes?

why isnt Cz part of the moments equation for X?
@LimblessAnt
@LimblessAnt Год назад
Dropping in 2 months later, I think it is because Cz is directly on the x-axis and therefore would not influence its turning

So basically the premise of the problem is to not include Cx into the force calculations?
@kaigardner3399
@kaigardner3399 3 года назад
These joints are called journal bearings and they can slide in and out so Cx doesn't exist

could someone tells me why cy = 0 plz?
@JoThoLuka
@JoThoLuka 3 года назад
The question is to find what magnitude of F2 will make Cy=0. Cy therefore has to be 0.
