The mobile crane is symmetrically supported by two
outriggers at A and two at B in order to relieve the
suspension of the truck upon which it rests and to provide
greater stability. If the crane boom and truck have a mass of
18 Mg and center of mass at G1, and the boom has a mass
of 1.8 Mg and a center of mass at G2, determine the vertical
reactions at each of the four outriggers as a function of the
boom angle u when the boom is supporting a load having a
mass of 1.2 Mg. Plot the results measured from u = 0° to the
critical angle where tipping starts to occur.

Love this explanation. Working hard to understand it fully. Would really love the same example worked with the boom facing backwards as well, so I can understand it better. Especially how it works if G2 is between A and G1. For expert mode difficulty, can you even show a worked example where the boom isn't orthogonal. What if the boom isn't straight ahead or behind?

Did you round differently? In the solutions to this problem, the answer shows: theta to be 70.3 degrees , N'A to be (29.4-31.3 sin(theta) kN and N'B to be 73.6+31.3 sin(theta)kN My professor used the sum of moments from B for this. Update: the error occurs at 7:05 in the video.I think you may have just looked at the sin(theta) wrong when writing it down. It was supposed to be 62.538.

I think your N'B is supposed to be 73.6+31.3 sin(theta) kN

Divide his answer by two. The answer requires the Na and Nb for each of the FOUR legs, not two which is in the picture.

kind of confusing at first...boom angle being measured from the vertical. In real life however boom angle would be measured from the horizontal. i.e. tipping would occur at approximately 20 degrees boom angle. Great explanation however!

Can you please explain how you get the values for NB=147.15+62.38 and the values for NA =58.85-62.38 that's where I get lost

I’m actually trying to work out the outrigger loads/reaction forces for my Kobelco RK-160-2 mobile crane as they aren’t available to me through the manual. I would really appreciate it if that is something you could work out for me and possibly provide a spreadsheet of those values at varying angles/degrees at its maximum lift capacity of 16t.

Hi Gina, Have you manage to work out the maximum lift capacitiy of the cranes? I am currently looking to find out the same

Can you do the same for telescopic boom lift? And one thing to mention, when angle changes, the CG shifts backward, which you have not considered, please cinder that as well

Can you do the same calculation with the boom rotated off of the longitudinal centreline of the carrier.

it says the crane boom and the truck have a mass of 18. then it says the mass of the boom is 1.8. so is the mass of the truck and boom 19.8 or (16.2 + 1.8)? The later gives a theta of 60 deg instead of 70, not a good mistake to make if you are running a crane.

aren't the weights suppose to be in Newtons? (kg)(m/s^2) is Newtons (N) not kilo Newtons (kN)
@krillinslosingstreak
@krillinslosingstreak 4 года назад
It's because the masses are in mega grams, (Mg), and (1 Mg = 1,000 kg). And so the units of the forces are in kilo Newtons (kN)
